Children out in the rain

For the past 2 days my children have been out in the rain at break and lunchtime. They have spent the last 2 days wet. The heating has been turned down. The staff are cold.

AIBU to think school should be keeping my children warm and dry?

Are they well wrapped up in waterproof coats/hats etc?

TidyDancer · 28/11/2018 16:13

If they're wearing coats and weather suitable footwear I can't see the harm in them being outside.

The trouble our school office staff get into because they haven’t allowed the children out at break! They are kids - they aren’t disprins that are going to dissolve ...

If the weather is okay kids should be out, but are your kids the ones that deliberately ignore the pleas to stay out of the big puddles ...

I think the responsibility is on you, as the parent, to provide adequate clothing for the weather.

Houseonahill · 28/11/2018 16:18

Trouble is schools cant win, they keep them in and get berated that children don't dissolve, they let them out and they get berated for letting them all dissolve!

Just make sure they thick warm coats and hats and I'm sure they will survive

Get waterproof coats and shoes? and a pair of trousers and sockd to change? kids should play outside and get exercise

TheClitterati · 28/11/2018 16:20

Our school is ridiculously over heated all winter long. Blush

adaline · 28/11/2018 16:22

Why aren't you sending them with a waterproof coat, hat, gloves etc?

Children won't melt in the rain - it's your responsibility as a parent to provide them with appropriate clothing.

Steelesauce · 28/11/2018 16:25

Are your children made of sugar?

Whynotnowbaby · 28/11/2018 16:25

Where I live the weather is terrible most of the time, it’s either raining or snowing. Children all have a complete change of clothes in school (which they rarely need any part of - dd has only once used the socks) but much more importantly, school demands that every child has a waterproof coat and trousers as well as an all-in-one snowsuit and both wellies and snow boots. We also have waterproof gloves and hats as a matter of course. My previously playtime-phobic dd now loves being out in all weathers, she is never cold or wet because she is always adequately equipped . I wish it was more like this in the U.K., she lost innumerable breaktimes to being shut up inside because of a spot of rain- hardly unpredictable weather.

glenthebattleostrich · 28/11/2018 16:25

My lovely Swedish friend bemoans the fact our school don't send them out in the rain! As she says, there's no such thing as bad weather only bad clothing and poor preparation!

DD has spare socks or rights in her bag all winter

cheesywotnots · 28/11/2018 16:26

If you know they are going out in the rain then why are they still getting wet, they should have proper outdoor clothes. If it's really tipping it down and the children are put at risk then I'd expect them to play in the hall instead.

RiverTam · 28/11/2018 16:26

fine for them to be out in the rain as long as they are suitably clad. The heating is a different issue.

Highby · 28/11/2018 16:37

After 45min out in the rain most coats, trousers/skirts are soaked. Shoes aren't 100% waterproof. The majority of the school are wearing wet clothing all day.

GlassSuppers · 28/11/2018 16:37

No such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.

Sorry OP, you need to send them with more practical clothing for wet play.

A proper waterproof coat (not just shower proof) should protect the clothes underneath. DD1’s keeps her dry and they play outside in the rain at school.

RomanyRoots · 28/11/2018 16:42

They won't melt if they get wet and low heating is more healthy for them.
We didn't have heating at school when I was growing up, nobody died.

Lunde · 28/11/2018 16:43

My children attended school in Sweden and everyone had to go out at break and lunch time whatever the weather and parents are expected to send suitable clothing. The Swedes believe it very unhealthy to sit indoors all day and I can think of only one time when there was a dispensation to be out for "only" 5-10 minutes and that was when it was minus 32C!

Mummyoflittledragon · 28/11/2018 16:45

I bought dd longer length water proof coats and decent winter boots every year. She doesn’t need them as they don’t go out in wet weather. Is that an option for you?

PhilomenaButterfly · 28/11/2018 16:45

YABU unless your children have cystic fibrosis, asthma or something else where getting wet could be detrimental to their health.

ReanimatedSGB · 28/11/2018 16:46

Is this primary or secondary school? If it's primary, why are you not sending them in with appropriate bad-weather clothing? If it's secondary, is the problem that it's a uniform-fascism school which won't allow weathr-appropriate clothing?

Grammar · 28/11/2018 16:47

Some of our longest living people are the ones that were brought up with 3 miles walk to and from school in all weathers.
Its the parents that are snowflakes, now not the other way round, ( unless we embue that in our children).. Let them get on with it, otherwise we are hanging ourselves by our own petard.

Confusedbeetle · 28/11/2018 16:48

Just need a good mac and wellies. Much healthier than heating
