Children out in the rain

For the past 2 days my children have been out in the rain at break and lunchtime. They have spent the last 2 days wet. The heating has been turned down. The staff are cold.

AIBU to think school should be keeping my children warm and dry?

If you're so worried about your kids not getting any exercise at school because it's raining why not take them for a run about when you get home?

It’s pretty dark once we get home from after school club at 6pm, TBH...

Been pretty dark here all day here tbh. Mine walk to and from school and that is plenty fresh air and exercise in torrential downpours imho.

Also no intention of sending mine out to play when they got home at 3 given the state of the weather.

Mine have a very short walk. As I said, torrential downpours - school does inside, I’m fine with that. A normal bit of light rain? Both I and the kids would prefer the chance for them to be outside when it’s not pitch black.

Agree with you on light drizzle, but its been anything but that here last couple of days. More like stair rods.

It’s quite shocking that schools in a fairly wet country are so poorly designed that there isn’t sufficient space for kids to change into/out of wet weather gear

That is a problem, with old buildings I understand but new buildings should have plenty of space. And also for a wet country why aren't proper waterproof clothes not more easily available? Going to an outdoor shop isn't going to be feasible for everyone, they ought to be sold in the supermarkets.

If they started expecting parents to provide proper rain gear then in time it would be normal, would be sold everywhere at reasonable prices, and this wouldn't be an issue but the problem would be what to do in the short term, for parents who can't afford or can't locate proper rain gear.

Could be worse though - I have to provide skis and ice skates for DD at her school! Waterproofs are much more affordable.

I pick up all our waterproofs online (usually the Regatta outlet site) and often get wellies in second hand shops or off friends who’s children have outgrown them. Picked up a lovely pair of Joules wellies in the second hand shop the other day for £4! Still had the labels on as well!

If you kept children in all the time when it was raining, children in Manchester would never go outdoors!

Translation: I sent my child in with inappropriate clothing but it's the schools fault 🙄

bluebellsparklypants · 01/12/2018 14:16

I wouldn’t mind them being out although with waterproof stuff but I would quite like them to dry off with abit of heating during the day

I agree Brits are terrible at dressing for the weather. Most dress for a life that rarely seems them outdoors for more than the walk from house to car.

Then they are dressing for the life they have. People who move from the car to a centrally heated office/home, would be overheating fairly quickly in a down filled North Face. Little point in. Using coats for a hale and hearty outdoor life if yours is not like that.

It it true that many coats are not warm or waterproof, but what is the point of a coat that is not warm or waterproof?

You really can’t comprehend that people buy clothes for reasons other than practicality?

unless they are terribly wealthy or trying to show off the latest brand, no not really. The 1st reason for buying clothes is practicality! If you chose your kids clothes because you want to show off a brand, you are a bit selfish aren't you.
