To ask if you exercise in the morning, what time you get up?

I need to start fitting some exercise into my days.

However as it is, dh and I get up at 6.15, coffee, breakfast, dh leaves at 7am, then I get the dc up, get them ready and leave house at 7.45am for Work.

I get home first at around 5ish with both dc in tow, I then make dinner, we eat at 6.15 when dh gets home, then it's homework, reading books, clearing up and getting clothes and lunches ready for the next day.

Both dc are in bed at 8.30pm at which point dh and I both sit down until bedtime, at 10pm!

In competition season I get up at 4.45am three times a week to ride my horse. The trick is to have all your clothes already laid out and the snooze button is absolutely off limits. Just get up and go - it's like being on autopilot for a few minutes but you wake up pretty quickly. I try to make sure I'm asleep by 10pm.

Dorsetdays · 29/11/2018 06:15

Up at 5.45 every morning, three days a week I do a HIIT class from 6.15-7.00 before leaving for school run/work at 7.45

My DC are older now so they can be left to get up and get ready on their own (DH works away in the week).

Also love running. We’re semi-rural so in the summer I can turn right out of my house and run in the countryside, in the winter I turn left and run into the village centre and can do a 5k loop which is all lit.

Feels great exercising in the morning as it sets me up for the day and love being up and about before things get busy. Rarely exercise in the evening unless my DD15 drags me to a gym class once a week!

Cuzcothellama · 29/11/2018 06:22

If I'm running early doors - 5 / 5.30am depending on distance. If I'm doing HIIT or something at home 5.30 / 5.45. Sometimes I do spinning, but that's after the school run, so normal time - 6am, or 6.30 if I can't be bothered to get out of bed!

alwaysstressed · 29/11/2018 07:11

I set my alarm for 4.45 and im downstairs ready to go by 5am.
I use my exercise bike, I have little weights and also follow workout videos on YouTube.
I then finish with about 20 mins of yoga. In the shower by 6.15.
I go to bed around 8.30 - 9 with the dcs every week night though so im still getting enough sleep and I give myself the weekends off.
I feel great going into work in the mornings now, lots of energy!

Itwillgeteasieripromise · 29/11/2018 07:15

5am Monday to Friday
6am Saturday
Get up, shower, bit of food, caffeine then out! (Sometime bit of make up if I look like a dead person which is often)

SarahBeeney · 29/11/2018 07:15

Read 'Fast Excercise' by Dr Michael Mosley. He also did a documentary about it.
2 minute workouts!

TheOxymoron · 29/11/2018 08:02

Hmm, some people seem to brush teeth but no body washing.
Fanjo’s need washing! Hmm

masterandmargarita · 29/11/2018 08:08

Why does your dog need washing?!

expatmigrant · 29/11/2018 08:12

Do you both have to be with DC every evening? You could leave him to have dinner and get DC sorted as you head off to exercise.
DH and I always took it in turns. That way we both managed to get exercise in.

JoyofSticks · 29/11/2018 08:12

I exercise in the morning at home, I allow 15 mins for it, I don't leave the house or run, I do a 15 min HIIT, it wakes me up and energises me for the day. Know which workout you're going to do, have it lined up ready to play, up 15 mins earlier, do it, feel EPIC and continue as usual.

Mummadeeze · 29/11/2018 08:13

I leave my house at 6.40am and walk to work for 8.30am. It is a long walk! But I put on good music and I actually quite enjoy it. I do it twice a week, not every day,

Jozen · 29/11/2018 08:14

TheOxymoron presumably most people will brush teeth to freshen up the morning breath prior to exercise and have a good wash of body parts after exercise.
Not much point doing it before.

qumquat · 29/11/2018 09:00

I can't exercise without breakfast I'd faint. So morning exercise is out for me as I have to leave for work by 7.15. I exercise after dd is in bed so normally 8.30 to 9.30 pm. It means there's no time for an 'evening' on those days but I do feel better for it. Trying to fit in exercise when you work full time and have DC is tough.

AmmoniteMum · 29/11/2018 09:16

Early runners/dog walkers, do you take a head torch or something else? Not many street lights where we are.

TheHoundsofLove · 29/11/2018 09:28

Ammomite I bought a runner's headtorch a couple of weeks ago - it is fantastic - really lights up the whole path in front of me and is so light that I can barely feel it on my head. I run/walk dogs along pitch black, uneven tracks with it.
I get up at 6 and go straight out - I don't even brush my teeth!

Blobby10 · 29/11/2018 10:07

There's a lady in my gym who is leaving when I get there at 5.30am. She has 3 children older primary/high school age and gets up at 3.50am!!!!!!!! So she can get her gym work in and shower before returning home to get ready for work. She goes to sleep at 10am. I just couldn't function on so little sleep every night but it works for her and she gets her exercise in around children and work!

AmmoniteMum · 29/11/2018 11:31

Thank you Hounds

Tatgalore · 29/11/2018 11:56

Next question, how do you get over self consciousness when running?

OP posts:
loveka · 29/11/2018 12:03

Fucking hell. This thread needs a bit of balance.

I go to Zumba at 10am. I drag myself out of bed at 9, kicking and screaming. Make a coffee and take it with me for the walk there. Want to weep from tiredness for the first 10 minutes.

I am not a morning person!

Popc0rn · 29/11/2018 12:05

@Tatgalore

Before I started running I never really noticed other runners, now I see them everywhere! So I honestly don't think most people actually take any notice if that makes sense? I used to feel so self conscious when I first started, and have had a few comments shouted at me from men etc, but I just enjoy it so much I just ignore and don't really care. Though part of the reason I love running is the peace and quiet, so my favourite time to go is about midnight on a weekday, very rare to see anyone else!

goingonabearhunt1 · 29/11/2018 13:39

loveka I agree! I always feel so lazy reading these threads.

I get up at 6am once or twice a week to get to a 7am class and up at 8am to do a class on a Saturday and that's it. I am not a morning person either Grin

I agree though that it's easier to do it first thing, can never be bothered after work. Also, building it into your day is good (i.e. walk or cycle to work and lunchtime walk or run).

TheHoundsofLove · 29/11/2018 14:01

Tatgalore When I first started, I used to go out after dark! I don't know how long you've been running for, but I have found that as I've got fitter and started to feel more like a 'proper' runner, I've totally lost the self-consciousness. I also agree with a PP, apart from a quick 'hi' from other runners, no one takes any notice of me anyway.

Tatgalore · 29/11/2018 14:39

I haven't been running at all really. Well I made a start last Summer but gave up after a few weeks. I started to feel really self conscious, I can't run any distance so it was more of jogging mixed with walking and I felt ridiculous.

I could run in the evening, even if only a couple of evenings a week it's forcing myself out.

Hanuman · 29/11/2018 15:56

Your DH doesn't do much of the kid stuff - if he got them up and out a couple of times a week, could you exercise those mornings? Or he could do some of the pick ups. I think if you are doing all of those, it is going to be very hard to fit in exercise

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/11/2018 18:27

I get up at 6.15- 6.45 ish, have a coffee and go out for 30-40 minutes run, 4 days a week usually. If I can work it so I don’t have to go out in the dark and cold I will, but it’s just the most convenient time really. I get back and Dh is doing breakfast for the dc, then we switch and he goes to work and I do the dc and get them to school.
