Strange question TV or dining chairs ?

I cannot buy both without going over drawn. I do not watch TV but DD2 does when she comes home from uni. Currently we have neither so it’s not like I’m upgrading .... does a house need a television.... can we eat Christmas dinner on our laps in front of said TV

If u don't watch tv I wouldn't bother purchasing one just for when DD comes over..

pennycarbonara · 28/11/2018 15:43

Can you get some dining chairs on Freecycle or very cheaply on Gumtree? A lot of people don't have space for them now, so if you're not fussy about the appearance they should be easy to find free or at very low cost.

5fivestar · 28/11/2018 15:43

I was forced to watch love island on her phone with her over the summer holidays. We coped.

Does either of you have a computer or tablet you can watch TV on?

anniehm · 28/11/2018 15:44

Having a tv means also a tv licence - better to watch Netflix on a laptop for occasional use.

MissingSummer · 28/11/2018 15:45

Could you not get a really cheap second hand TV for your DD (or look on Freecycle or something) and buy the dining chairs? If she's rarely there, she's (hopefully!) not going to expect a 50inch flat screen!

5fivestar · 28/11/2018 15:47

I want nice chairs ideally, if I’m investing I’m investing kinda thing hence I can’t have both. Am just worried it’ll be a long week if she’s used to watching TV and can’t aside of her phone. I’d cut the plug off after she goes back and cancel the licence until the summer holidays

OP posts:
MrsLettuce · 28/11/2018 15:47

I'd go with the chairs, no question.

mummmy2017 · 28/11/2018 15:50

Do the chairs, and tell her she can chat to you, or you can go out..
Why waste cash on something you won't use.

TheMobileSiteMadeMeSignup · 28/11/2018 15:50

I'm sure she will cope. Get chairs.

Eilaianne · 28/11/2018 15:53

You don't need to cut the plug off the TV if you don't have a TV licence - just don't watch TV liveConfused

Plenty of people watching Netflix, 4od, Amazon, online DVD purchases etc with their (plugged in) TV aren't breaking the licence rules.

Nottobesoldseparately · 28/11/2018 15:53

Chairs.

Trying to cancel the tv licence will be a nightmare. They are a ridiculous body to deal with and you will have more hassle than it's worth!

NoThankyouHun · 28/11/2018 15:54

Just go overdrawn for a bit or use a credit card for one and pay it off next month. No interest charged then. Obviously that would only work if you could afford to pay it off next month with no issues.

Eilaianne · 28/11/2018 15:54

Buy now, you can't afford the next washing machine breakdown, car repair, freezer dying, insert other irregular but expensive thing here.

Eilaianne · 28/11/2018 15:55

Buy neither that was meant to be!

recently · 28/11/2018 16:02

Chairs! You can probably get an older model tv for free. We recently got rid of one as we couldn't even give it away!

ittooshallpass · 28/11/2018 16:07

Buy the chairs and get a tv at 0% interest over 6-12 months from curry's pc world.

TidyDancer · 28/11/2018 16:10

What's your budget? I'll admit I don't watch a lot of live TV generally, prefer a Netflix binge, but I don't think I'd want to be without one.

You may well find you could afford both.

5fivestar · 28/11/2018 16:14

Eilaianne - we are literally starting from scratch so all my appliances are brand new and under warranty

5fivestar · 28/11/2018 16:15

£400 budget, get paid after Christmas so will get the other come 7th January. Good idea about interest free though

Well different strokes for different folks but I think it's fucking crazy to buy expensive dining room chairs OR a scant-used TV if you cannot withstand a fairly normal financial shock without dipping into an overdraft. Also shocked at the posters telling you to dip into your OD or whack iron a credit card or hire purchase... Good tools if you're financially responsible, don't expect any huge financial set backs, make them work for you... But I don't think it's responsible advice in this situation!

Racecardriver · 28/11/2018 16:36

Tvs are complete unnecessary. Why can’t she use her computer for tv?

5fivestar · 28/11/2018 16:43

She can race car it’s just not the same is it.

I think you’ve misunderstood Eilanna I can afford one or the other not both having paid all bills and bought Christmas presents. December is generally an expensive month. Not having an additional £800 isn’t terribly unusual

No, it doesn't.

ToastedSandwichObsession · 28/11/2018 16:50

I'd buy both but neither would be new. I'd be looking on fb selling pages, marketplace and charity shops. If I can buy secondhand then I will.
