so basically had an allergic reaction to a fabric plaster, it started weeping so went to the GP yesterday to check if i needed antibiotics, didn't even examine the area just looked at it and said i'll just give you 5 days antibiotics, she then asked if id ever been checked for diabetes and i said no i hadn't, she mumbled on something like because i have an infection i need to be checked for diabetes, can only assume this is a sly dig at my weight as i am a size 16-18, never had any issues before with my GP but this was someone completely new, aibu to feel a bit pissed off with this or am i over reacting Hmm

Not read everything, but in my experience GPs don’t ‘have a sly dig’ at your weight; they just tell you straight, which I think is their job.

TurquoiseDress · 29/11/2018 22:24

YABU!

I very much doubt the doctor was having sly dig at your weight.

Yes you went in with an infected finger and they gave you the appropriate treatment.

They were probably taking the opportunity to test you for diabetes (type 2 i reckon)- the fact you've got an infection/not healing and the fact that you are overweight.

Ollivander84 · 29/11/2018 22:31

It's tricky because HS doesn't heal well anyway! Massive reactions to dressings are standard for me, and my armpit wound was a hole for 8 months until they finally agreed to close it surgically
They're a v different type of wound to a normal cut/wound I have gory photos of mine

16-18 is heavy and on the road to health problems. As a society I don't know how we will deal with the issue, if even a gp is getting accused of sly digs for even suggesting such a thing.

My uncle we always called him big . He never smoked, has the occasional drink, loves his food, first his toe was removed then the foot and now the whole leg. He still won't change.

tiddliewinkiewoo · 30/11/2018 00:32

I'm a size 8 OP and definitely understand your OP - However everymtime I go to my GP and get the head tilt and questions if I have a 'full' diet, am I eating OK and other than the reason I'm at the doctors is some mask because I'm so thin.

Everytime they take my blood and ask about diabetes - it's really not personal.

The health professionals who I work with have to ask uncomfortable questions - they'd be negligent if they didn't - and a fact is that overweight/obese people are more prone to diabetes - she was doing her job and asking relevant questions no matter how uncomfortable that made you feel x

Nice to see ageism is alive and well on mumsnet. Well done TigerTooth, you should be so proud.

parrotonmyshoulder · 30/11/2018 01:24

Not read the whole thread, but am delighted to notice that you ‘had a good read online’ and now know better than your highly trained GP.

A Fat Face hoodie is mutton dressed as lamb? That is hilarious. Fat Face is hardly down with the kids - I don’t think they would be seen dead in it Grin

It is all relative though Sameold
At 6ft tall a size 16 is fine.

I am 5'7" and a size 12. I am slim, and people think I am slimmer than I am because I have no boobs and a thin face. If I was a size 16 I would be the size of a house.

haloumi · 30/11/2018 08:31

I'm surprised the Doctor didn't weigh you, tell you you are overweight and suggest a Diabetes test.

They are there to provide health care, and to advise you on how to look after yourself, not stroke your ego.

The BEST Doctors are truthful, blunt and tell it how it is.

busyhonestchildcarer · 30/11/2018 08:58

Itll be type 2 as the other is one you are born with.Type 2 is linked to weight. Its also genetic so if you have family with diabetes it puts you more at risk and being over weight puts you at risk too.In regards to your weight I dont know your height or build but its worth checking your bmI.Do the one which also takes your build into account.Being overweight is a concern and maybe its wise to addres this before diabetes becomes a reality

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 30/11/2018 09:12

Fat face hoodie = mutton dressed as lamb Grin. Not sure I accept that you are a fashion guru TigerTooth dear.

DustyMaiden · 30/11/2018 09:17

If your blood sugar is high when you get a small infection it has a party and doesn’t clear up without antibiotics. As infection hasn’t healed you could have diabetes.

GinandGingerBeer · 30/11/2018 09:42

Can't stop laughing at the fat face-mutton dressed as lamb comment. Have you got your white stilettos and boob tube on with it @Talkinpeece Grin

Talkinpeece · 30/11/2018 13:42

Loving the judging of my clothing choices Wink
Does it help or hinder that I bought it in a charity shop? Grin
And no, I am not skinny.
My body fat percentage is 29%

If I was a size 16-18 my body fat percentage would be over 50%
there is no way that can be considered healthy.

mortifiedmama · 30/11/2018 13:55

@busyhonestchildcarer you aren't born with type 1 diabetes. It's usually a result of a virus which attacks the pancreas beta cells which then die or stop working. Other things also cause the beta cells to stop working too. It can happen at time but is most common in adolescents.

Rorshach · 30/11/2018 13:56

I'm type 1. I understand that you are inordinately upset by being tested for diabetes. You do have symptoms. If it helps you feel better my TINY size 6 friend was tested as she has PCOS and some symptoms.

Frankly I would just be glad my doctor cared enough. If caught early changes can be made and you won't end up on insulin.

howabout · 30/11/2018 14:21

Talk not sure how you are calculating your body fat? Last time I used the fancy machine at the gym mine came out at 22. That was a while ago, pre DD3, so just used a couple of on line calculators and got 24 (apparently I am on the "fit" spectrum just below the "acceptable" range). I am a Fat Face size 12.

BTW my 2 teenagers consider FF to be old lady fashion only their DM would wear so you are in good company. Grin

Talkinpeece · 30/11/2018 15:10

Howabout
My gym has a BodiTrax machine. I use it instead of home scales.
I am lightly built hence the high body fat / low clothes size.
And I'm too old to believe that you can be fat and healthy at the same time.

If more doctors were blunter with people at a young age we might not have the T2 crisis which will turn into a T3 crisis in a decade or so.

howabout · 30/11/2018 15:25

Makes sense. I have a wide frame and no squashy bits. Currently sporting a leg brace and hospital were struggling to make it narrow enough for me.

The BBC are running an article on insulin today which linked to an article on "fat" thin people. Dress size is a very crude measure.

I don't disagree with the point about the need for medical frankness.

Bowchicawowow · 30/11/2018 15:29

The doctor won’t give a shit that you are overweight. That is your choice. She will however give a massive shit about getting sued by you if she messes up your diagnosis and you complain .

TigerTooth · 30/11/2018 16:56

Ah - so 'No ageism' but the fat shaming is ok eh? Did you actually read her post? Cringe at the old dear's vanity.

MrWolfknowsthetime · 30/11/2018 17:03

Just fucking stop with the old dear stuff TigerTooth
