Foamybanana93 · 28/11/2018 12:55

so basically had an allergic reaction to a fabric plaster, it started weeping so went to the GP yesterday to check if i needed antibiotics, didn't even examine the area just looked at it and said i'll just give you 5 days antibiotics, she then asked if id ever been checked for diabetes and i said no i hadn't, she mumbled on something like because i have an infection i need to be checked for diabetes, can only assume this is a sly dig at my weight as i am a size 16-18, never had any issues before with my GP but this was someone completely new, aibu to feel a bit pissed off with this or am i over reacting Hmm

I'm fat, I did get it under control but major family stress combined with a couple of operations which stopped me exercising othe Han walking meant I put it all on again over the last two years. I have started again but this is going to take time. In the meantime I continue to ensure I'm tested for T2 diabetes annually as there's a family history and my weight is a major risk factor. TBH the HCP who does my blood test tells me I don't need it as all of them have been fine so far bit I'd rather make sure.

Enthymeme · 29/11/2018 20:13

You have a very competent doctor.

NotBeforeCoffee · 29/11/2018 20:30

You know it’s unhealthy to be overweight right?
And doctors are there to look after your health... so they are perfectly entitled to mention your weight or any related potential problems

nannykatherine · 29/11/2018 20:38

it was weeping so they gave you antibiotics
😲

QuickWash · 29/11/2018 20:42

I love that your quick googling has given you complete knowledge and certainty that you don't need testing or screening for diabetes OP.

Why go to a GP (5 years medical school, many years post grad training) who is concerned enough that you need testing to arrange a blood test for you, when you can somehow Google and be sure they're wrong and get huffy about it?!

TigerTooth · 29/11/2018 20:56

Lots of thinly veiled fat Shamers here op.
A wound that doesn't easily heal is a diabetis indicator. I don't think it was about your weight.
BTW - A size 16 is the average size of a British female.

winniestone37 · 29/11/2018 20:59

Ridiculous

TigerTooth · 29/11/2018 21:01

What is ridiculous?

LDN80 · 29/11/2018 21:05

@tigertooth. Well said. I’ve just read through this thread and I can’t believe the amount of insensitive bitchy comments about this woman’s weight..‘ you’re clearly obese’ or ‘you’re clearly very overweight’.
Maybe OP may not be stick thin but at least she’s not an insensitive b**ch!

lljkk · 29/11/2018 21:06

It would be so much better if you had diabetes but no one dared to ask you to get a test for it, coz you know, you might be offended by being asked.

ILoveDolly · 29/11/2018 21:08

If the doctor wanted to criticize your weight, they would have done it, they do it everyday.
The doctor told you that your infection made them want to test you for diabetes. Would you rather they let you get ill?

Talkinpeece · 29/11/2018 21:12

BTW - A size 16 is the average size of a British female.
Which is overweight

Talkinpeece · 29/11/2018 21:13

When I was a size 16 I had a body fat percentage over 35%
that is overweight

ILoveDolly · 29/11/2018 21:15

Size 16 is usually somewhat overweight, and that is a cause of diabetes but I really think the op is reading too much into what the doctor said. It is an imagined criticism.

bertielab · 29/11/2018 21:16

Sensible suggestion

WinterfellWench · 29/11/2018 21:29

@Tigertooth I agree.

This site never ceases to amaze me sometimes. There is lots of fat shaming on here.

Then again, I suppose a size 16 is morbidly and clinically obese to most of the posters on here who are a body size 4 to 6, and six and a half stone, and 5 foot 9 inches tall. 🙄

@foamybanana93

OP, your doctor was not trying to shame you or having a sly dig. She was probably just thinking that you being slightly overweight may be a reason for your health issue.

Ignore the perfect supermodels on here with their size 4 to 6 figures. You know damn well that in real life, the vast majority of folk on here do not look like they claim they do.

Talkinpeece · 29/11/2018 21:34

I am 54. I am 5'5".
My Body fat percentage is currently 29.3%
that is at the upper end of healthy
I am sitting here wearing size 8 Next jeans and a size 10 Fat Face hoodie.

Size 16-18 is overweight. End of.

WinterfellWench · 29/11/2018 21:41

Good for you!!!!!! 👍

What do you want? A medal?

LDN80 · 29/11/2018 21:42

Why is the brand of clothing your wearing relevant to Your dress size?!

Bouchie · 29/11/2018 21:53

I'm a size 14 and definitely overweight. (5'6'', 11.7 stone). My GP mentioned it as I have a few health problems that could be related. I wasn't offended in the least its their job.

Motoko · 29/11/2018 21:54

Different brands are different sizes. So a size 12 in one brand, could be a 14 or 10 in another brand.

It's a commonly known problem.

Talkinpeece · 29/11/2018 21:59

Brands were listed purely to allow people to compare mentally
as Victoria Beckham size 8 is rather different from Asda
The OP became very defensive
but being overweight is a life limiting illness
and taking that on board is sensible

RespectfullyNo · 29/11/2018 22:00

I know as my mother has diabetes, your body is more subsepticle to bruise easy and not able to heal wounds quickly, to which may lead to an infection. Depending on where it is located and what happened, I would say that was the meaning of that statement.
Besides that. My first time to internal medicine in over a decade, cause me to think conscientious as you due to a weight remark. When asked what I was here for today, I replied I am looking for a diagnosis on this over-sized calf because the other leg is not like this. In fact all my life this leg was always smaller to why I noticed the gradual change over the last couple of years. I want to know if it retained water or may be cancer or something. As well due to a childhood injury I think I have developed arthritis in my knee and elbow.
I was told well I really can't tell unless you loose weight, but I can prescribe you something for the pain.Hmm

pollymere · 29/11/2018 22:05

I have type 1. This was key in me being diagnosed. Nothing to do with my weight.

Jellybubbamama0987 · 29/11/2018 22:19

I’ve not read the full thread but I have to be careful with plasters as I’m allergic to some. It’s pine needle oil in the adhesive that gives you the rash/weeping. I am also allergic to Christmas trees for the same reason, come out in itchy rash. Get tested or rub pine needles on you and see what happens lol
