To ask how to help DD with chicken pox in her vulva

PrincessWatermelon · 27/11/2018 16:54

DD4 is covered in CP spots including in her vulva and the entrance to her back passage. She's crying in pain. Dosed up on calpol and piriton. We did a warm bath with bicarbonate of soda earlier (not sure if it gave any relief). She's currently sitting on an ice pack in the vague hope that'll cool it down.

Anything else you can suggest? It's horrible seeing her in such discomfort. Thanks

When I had a baby in Germany they had fridges on the postnatal ward with pads which were soaked in calendula cream and then frozen, they were utter heaven.

agnurse · 27/11/2018 19:41

A word of advice: DO NOT put steroids on it unless a provider tells you to do so. The skin in these areas is very thin and there's a greater risk for systemic side effects.

Munchmallow · 27/11/2018 19:43

Poor thing - I had shingles in the same area so I really sympathise, it bloody hurt and I couldn't sit down for weeks!

Don't use sudocrem, I did and it's so thick it just sticks everywhere.

Pharmacies have a soothing spray for chickenpox spots, maybe you could try
that?

Hope she's feeling better soon.

lakehouse · 27/11/2018 19:44

If you have the vaccine even now it can lessen symptoms. There is no need for any children to suffer chicken pox with the vaccine available at any pharmacy.

Oats really helped both my kids when they had chicken pox

moleeye · 27/11/2018 20:12

another one for oats in the bath! My 4 year old had it in April when we had the heatwave and she was so miserable

She loved in the bath. We got the cooling gel but she said it stung, so ended up using the calomine lotion on her.

Lots of distraction with tv, chocolate, sweets, and ice lollies

Your poor daughter, hope she gets some relief and sleep tonight xx

moleeye · 27/11/2018 20:13

*lived in the bath

IceBearRocks · 27/11/2018 20:15

Medi honey is brilliant for things like this!!!

Worlds0kayestmum · 27/11/2018 20:27

Poor thing. My children are going through chicken pox at the moment too. For DD i put aveeno cream on and it really helped. With DS (18 months) his genital area is really sore and I've been applying camomine lotion, bless him his eyes half close with bliss when I apply it

ElphabaFlies · 27/11/2018 20:36

Poxclin. Absolutely amazing stuff, can't see a reason not to use it there but double check leaflets.

SpringerLink · 27/11/2018 20:40

Bonjela or another mouth ulcer gel with an anaesthetic in it. Sounds strange, it will sting a bit, but then it numbs them.

BonnieandHyde · 27/11/2018 20:46

DO NOT USE CALOMINE LOTION.

Also if it's in the nappy area are you sure it isn't HFM?

If it's in her mouth and sore throat it's more likely HFM than chicken pox fyi.

Castieldeansam · 27/11/2018 20:48

I don't know if this will help, but germoline has a numbing agent in it. If other things don't work, pop a little on to numb it just to give a little relief.

Nolagerformethanks · 27/11/2018 20:51

No different suggestions than the wonderful posters above but I just wanted to say I hope she is better soon, it must be awful for you all Flowers

Homemadearmy · 27/11/2018 20:53

I used to leave the water in the bath all day and just top it up with a bit of hot. Then the kids could hop in and out when they needed

agnurse · 27/11/2018 20:57

BonnieandHyde

It is VERY possible for chickenpox to appear on the mucous membranes. Any area of skin can have lesions. When I had chickenpox at age 10 I had a few lesions on my scalp. I had to be careful when I washed my hair.

SoyDora · 27/11/2018 20:58

Yes, DD1 had chicken pox in all her mucous membranes... vulva, inside her mouth, up her nose, eyelids etc.

AnnieOH1 · 27/11/2018 20:59

Try and get some Virasoothe, it's a little expensive but works really well.

PrincessWatermelon · 27/11/2018 21:01

Virasoothe! That's the one I got.

She fell asleep quite quickly. I've had to go out so praying she's still asleep.

Thanks everyone. Hopefully this was the worst, but shall reread recommendations tomorrow if needed.

My dd2 was only just 2 when she got them and still in nappies, everytime she weed she screamed because obviously it stung so bad. I left her naked on the bottom half and kept an eye for any scratching. She had several oat baths per day and a bi-carb bath before bed. Used calmine lotion too

They dried up within a couple of days so it will ease soon.

Defientley leave her bottom half naked though if possible because she will get quite sweaty and it will take longer for them to dry up

LightNC · 28/11/2018 00:57

Zinc and castor oil saved me as a teen. No virasoothe around then though. I hope your DD recovers very soon.
