To ask how to help DD with chicken pox in her vulva

PrincessWatermelon · 27/11/2018 16:54

DD4 is covered in CP spots including in her vulva and the entrance to her back passage. She's crying in pain. Dosed up on calpol and piriton. We did a warm bath with bicarbonate of soda earlier (not sure if it gave any relief). She's currently sitting on an ice pack in the vague hope that'll cool it down.

Anything else you can suggest? It's horrible seeing her in such discomfort. Thanks

I had this at about age 7 and I still remember it - not pleasant at all. (No lasting effects, just to reassure you). I also had spots in ears, eyes, nose etc. Grim.

I felt so poorly that my mum put me in bed with my dad at some time during the early hrs. I vomited in the bed. It was the fastest I have EVER seen my dad move Grin

This probably doesn't help your DD...

I think my mum put flannel with cream on it in my pants, and I remember sitting in bath quite a lot, then being smothered in calamine.

Oldraver · 27/11/2018 18:03

Oat baths are good...you can also squeeze the goo that comes through the tights and rub it on the spots

Alieeeeeens · 27/11/2018 18:10

Definitely NOT vagisil! My mum got me some when I had CP at 15yo and thought it would help with the itching. OMG THE BURNING!! Took my mind off the itching for a while to be fair!

PrincessWatermelon · 27/11/2018 18:11

Hadn't thought of a pad or flannel soaked in calamine lotion. Once my DH is home I can go and get these bits. Feeding her chocolate now to distract her

Also natural yoghurt on a flannel is very cooling - only thing that soothed my daughter.

PrincessWatermelon · 27/11/2018 18:13

And oats. Need them too

I had chicken pox when I was 18 and I remember very clearly the chickenpox down below! Poor DD. It will be itchy as hell, a bit like how a horrid bout of thrush feels.

Best things I found were airing it as much as possible, helping it to dry out, and calamine lotion. Obviously try not to let her scratch as it makes it so much worse. It should only last a day or two before they scab over, but being in an area with less air getting to it, it does mean they take a while longer to scab over.

Tons and tons of calamine lotion! It works immediately, but you do have to keep reapplying. If it comes in a big bottle, get two!

ShanghaiDoll · 27/11/2018 18:25

I had this with my daughter too. Was recommended to swap the piriton for the kids version of benadryl. It's a stronger antihistamine. Good luck.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 27/11/2018 18:27

I had this at 26 .. it was hell. I found a bath with calomine and sea salt was a big relief. And spent about three days sat in it.

Shedoesntevengohere1 · 27/11/2018 18:29

I feel your pain, my dd had chicken pox on her vulva also and she was terribly uncomfortable and in a lot of pain. I soaked a soft wash cloth in chamomile lotion she would just sit there with it pressed against it whenever it bothered her. Really did help, it soothed it and had a cooling affect. Also as above, oat baths were a life saver for my dd. She would lay in the bath with a hand towel over her body that was soaked in the oat water. Good luck!

Shedoesntevengohere1 · 27/11/2018 18:30

*calamine rather ☺️

babysharkah · 27/11/2018 18:34

We resorted to the big cotton make up pads smothered in sudocrem tucked in and knickers on top. It was awful. I wish I had known that vaccination was an option.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 27/11/2018 18:36

Sanitary towels in the freezer - and bepanthem (baby bum cream). Works wonders with haemorrhoids. May be worth a try?

Poor kid.

NewMinouMinou · 27/11/2018 18:43

Oh poor love.

Absolutely swear by the oats in a sock, as well as Piriton or similar.
Hope she’s on the mend soon.

xxxbingbunnyxxx · 27/11/2018 18:55

I had this as an adult, not nice indeed. I took a damn tea towel and froze it. Then Sat on it, rotated this between 2 of them. Short term releaf, but releaf all the same!

xxxbingbunnyxxx · 27/11/2018 18:56

Damp, not damn!!!

xxxbingbunnyxxx · 27/11/2018 18:58

Relief!! What is going on with my predictive text????

Whatififall · 27/11/2018 19:04

For DD I tucked a cold, wet flannel into her pants

PrincessWatermelon · 27/11/2018 19:14

Thanks. The pharmacist warned me against calamine lotion as it is so drying. He recommended a cooling get specifically for chickenpox. Have put some on although I'm not sure it's offered much relief.

I kind of wish I'd bought the calamine lotion anyway, but hey ho.

She's tucked up in bed now as clearly v tired and DH is lying with her. The gut wrenching screaming as eased, so fingers crossed.

Have oats upstairs ready for a bath if needed in the middle of the night!

Poor girl hope she's better soon. Chicken pox is really horrible Sad

AmIRightOrAMeringue · 27/11/2018 19:25

I was recommended Pirton or similar for the itching
Oat baths (I did bicarb and oat bath together)
Nappy free time if you can

Just one thing are you sure it is chicken pox (been diagnosed by a doctor)? I thought my baby had pox recently but turned out to be hand foot and mouth which was worst everywhere in her nappy. I read they should call it hand foot mouth and buttock as it is really common. Doesn't affect treatment other than you don't have to isolate as much and can give ibuprofen as well as calpol

chezbot · 27/11/2018 19:27

Another recommendation for oats in a sock/muslin. Hope she feels better soon

PrincessWatermelon · 27/11/2018 19:31

Definitely CP. Been going round nursery. It's mainly on her torso (started there) and they're blistering. Hardly on hands or feet. Thanks for the thought though.

Di11y · 27/11/2018 19:31

you can get calamine mixed with aqueous cream which my girls found very soothing. but for both the itching was only bad for 2 days then much better

mintich · 27/11/2018 19:34

Emollient cream that contains calamine. All the benefits with none of the drying.
I caught chicken pox as an adult, and was putting calamine lotion on. The spots were drying so fast that they were cracking and causing me pain. Then 111 recommended the cream. So soothing!!
