New to mumsnet. Why so many trans threads?

Sunisshining5346 · 27/11/2018 11:15

Im extremely new to mumsnet (less than a week) I don't understand why there are so many threads on trans etc? I have loads of active threads about it. Can someone tell me why? And is there anyway I can stop them on my thread?
I'm not being mean before people attack me. It's just I'm not trans, I know nobody that is, so I can't join in those conversations.

Sorry I really hope I haven't offended anybody. Can someone just explain to me why? And if I can stop them xx

But most threads on here descend into chaos! People on here can argue and want to kill each other about whether not to put their christmas tree up!

Oh wow lol

May I suggest Netmums, OP? Might be more your style and pace Smile

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 27/11/2018 11:59

Yes I'm learning that one very fast!

Yeah, Mumsnet is renowned for being a nest of vipers....

I'm not sure why you thought it was anything else?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 27/11/2018 12:00

Ahh, I understand. If people disagree with you, it’s fine to be aggressive and abusive back. No, I mean it is to be expected that many women will say that insisting that some men are actually women and other women should just accept that and stop arguing about it, is not acceptable!

And FWR is one place that the usual female socialisations of being nice and polite and being sure not to hurt anyone elses feelings are being discarded. So few people will observe the usual feminine nicety of apologising before disagreeing with you!

Sunisshining5346 · 27/11/2018 12:01

Ok thank you like I said to everybody that has been nice and kindly posted helpful responses to me.
Me saying disrespectful is now offending people. Can I close this thread at all? Before it gets out of control?

AlpacaLypse · 27/11/2018 12:01

I love the sort of thread where someone is considering murder about whether or not to put up a Christmas tree yet!

Meanwhile I've learned so much by reading odd threads over the years - keep an open mind OP.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 27/11/2018 12:02

I mean i get that the Trans posts are currently being highlighted on websites that wouldn't normally have a interest, but every thread is similar and always has been it's not just threads on that topic which are brutal.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 27/11/2018 12:03

You should see the buggy on bus threads.

AlpacaLypse · 27/11/2018 12:05

If you report your own opening post to MN they may consider taking it down.

Drogosnextwife · 27/11/2018 12:06

I can never understand why people don't just skip by the threads they don't want to read.

Sunisshining5346 · 27/11/2018 12:08

@alpacalapse thank you! Will try now

sheldonesque · 27/11/2018 12:11

But to answer your question: the threads are not by/about trans individuals but are women discussing the possible ramifications of changes in the law that will allow anyone who chooses to do so change the legal sex simply by saying so!

This.

Which you may have realised if you'd read the threads.

And I can't as much see fake naivete as smell it ...

I can't argue the toss as I'm away to malky my neighbour for shoving up her Christmas tree in November

PositivelyPERF · 27/11/2018 12:13

Your fake naivete is showing

Is that a euphemism? 😁

Blanchedupetitpois · 27/11/2018 12:13

So few people will observe the usual feminine nicety of apologising before disagreeing with you!

There’s a big difference between not apologising before disagreeing with someone and calling someone a woman-hating handmaiden because she doesn’t hold the same view as you.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 27/11/2018 12:17

I can never understand why people don't just skip by the threads they don't want to read.

Because then the rest of the world wouldn't know they are avoiding it.

spreadmarmznotmisery · 27/11/2018 12:18

It's not about knowing any trans people. It's about protecting the language that protects women.

JingsMahBucket · 27/11/2018 12:20

@Sunisshining5346 if you're really a genuine poster, here's how to hide certain boards from showing up in your Active Talk list. I just recently discovered this myself and I was so happy to be able to hide the Feminist board because so many of the threads kept bubbling to the surface and I hated it!

  1. If you're on desktop, click the arrow next to the big "Talk" word.
  1. Then click on "Customise".
  1. Once you reach the next page, scroll to the bottom and click on "Manage hidden topics and threads".
  1. From there you can search for a board from the drop down menu on the left and then click to move to the right hand column. I searched for the Feminist board.

My Active Talk stream is a lot less annoying now and I can still dip into the board if I want to (not likely though).

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 27/11/2018 12:23

I have to say i used to hide feminism chat too, and sex.

Sunisshining5346 · 27/11/2018 12:24

@jingsmybucket thank you!
Yes I am genuine..I don't know why people doubt people on here so much?
Will do that now. I have reported this post now, like someone advised to. Hopefully it will be removed soon!
Will hide the threads now..Thank you again xx

Trans threads only come up in the femenist section (it’s a hot topic in femenism at the moment and there are also a lot of femenists in MN). Hide the femenist section andyoueontsee any more.

Elfinablender · 27/11/2018 12:26

Yeah, I think you might be better off at netmums. Over there you will be enveloped in positive vibes and sparkly shit. Be careful not to cross anyone though, otherwise you will be banished

CuriousaboutSamphire · 27/11/2018 12:32

I don't know why people doubt people on here so much? Mainly because the topic draws all sorts of people who post only to then 'harvest' any less than polite responses to post elsewhere - to show just how evil we women of MN are!

They tend to use quite hyperbolic language, be very apologetic and ask what seems to be an odd, naive question. All of which your posts have included.

Also there are trolls on just about any and every topic you can imagine. They can be very, very persuasive and many posters, myself included, have offered reams of help, shared experiences, just to then be mocked or saddened when MNHQ reveal the troll for what it is!

So sometimes you just have to accept that your post struck a chord, probably one you didn't intend to, but, just possibly, one you did!

JingsMahBucket · 27/11/2018 12:36

@Sunisshining5346 you're very welcome. I'm feminist to my core but the threads that kept surfacing from the board were just repetitive and tiresome so I was really happy to find that hide functionality. I thought it was only for individual threads prior to that.

Ignore the overly defensive weirdos and keep going and enjoying the threads you actually do care about. :)

LurkingWaspi · 27/11/2018 13:08

Works for me. Perhaps in a different way.

Avoid anyone posting here who keeps insisting that they are a real lawyer, unless they can show you their credentials. Some fakers about.

papayasareyum · 27/11/2018 13:54

I wonder how many of the people who choose to hide the entire feminism section are the same people who loudly dismiss Mumsnet as “transphobic” despite the fact they refuse to enagage with the discussion or read any of the posts, so are mostly ignorant of the issues which concern women? They shout TRANSPHOBIC! and hide anything which gives them a balanced view of the discussionHmm
