I used to get really bad coughs and after many years discovered that if I took something that dried up the catarrah, like Contact 3000, it would significantly reduce the severity of the cough and the length I was ill for. So worth a shot if you can take it - I can't any more as it gave me palpitations.
Neat honey is another thing to try - if your cough is bad, I get a bottle of squirty honey from the supermarket and just squeeze a dab on my tongue - making sure not to actually get the nozzle on my tongue! then just sort of let it melt gently down my throat rather than swallowing quickly, helps to soothe it which makes the cough less severe. And taking just because as well, to keep throat lubricated, so that coughing doesn't start too badly too. Just need to remember to keep brushing your teeth lots!
Gargling with whisky or brandy (before you have the honey) if you don't need to go out and drive (or indeed do anything you need to be awake or not drunk for!) to kill the germs on the back of your throat. Allegedly gargling soluble aspirin will have a similar effect but I can't bear the taste so usually go the brandy route. Then follow with honey to sooth gently.
Over the years I've ended up with the squeezy bottle of honey as it's easier to grab and squeeze a few drops as you need it rather than faff around with jars and spoons and washing them and the like. I tend to keep it separate from the 'good' honey that I'd have on toast!
If the cough is worse at night might be worth googling the symptoms of whooping cough - turns out that adults don't really whoop like kids do, and the vaccingations we had when we were little are not life long as was thought at the time - which means that whooping cough is on the rise but under recgonised these days. Bad news is that its other name is 100 day cough... Also as your chest isn't really blocked, doctors tend to dismiss it as not being a bad cough, you ignore it and actually it's really miserable. Fingers crossed it's not and that you recover soon!
