What do you do with baby when filling up in garage

Do you leave baby in locked car? Take baby in with you?

My Bank card never works at pump, so I have no choice but to go in.
I’m quite a new driver and I’ve not had to fill up on my own when I’ve got little one in the car with me.
What do others do?

To those saying leave baby in car, would you also do that in summer?

Topseyt · 28/11/2018 07:32

Brightstarrysky, at a fuel station for just two minutes of pay, yes. I did. Never a problem.

Yes - I fuel up in the morning.

Jasquers · 28/11/2018 07:36

I left my 3 year old in the car. Locked it. Next thing I know she's wandering the forecourt as I'm paying. She managed to get out the car seat (strapped in) and open the drivers door! Never again. I always take mine in now. Much safer

00100001 · 28/11/2018 07:39

I never took my baby out if it's (breathable, climate controlled) bubble wrap.

Its safest you see.

00100001 · 28/11/2018 07:41

jasquers but that doesn't solve the problem, if she can get out of her car seat, she could do this whilst travelling at 70mph along the M22... then what?

You need to stop her getting out of the seat....

Everybody, in the world, apart from a few peiple on MN, leavw their babies safely strapped in the carseat while they pay for petrol. I used to lock the doors as well becasue i had a car where you could zone the alarm. If I hadn't I still would have left them in their carseats. My youngest is now 8 and still stays in the carseat. None of them.would ever have dreamed of getting out.

bengalcat · 28/11/2018 07:46

Leave in a locked car and keep my eye on it insofar as I can . I do the same with the dog .

Jasquers · 28/11/2018 07:51

0010001...I never said it solved any "problem". Just that was my experience.....

I’m confused Confused
It’s fuel not a weekly shop.

Ansumpasty · 28/11/2018 08:05

I’ve never, ever seen anyone get their children out the car to take into the petrol station to pay for petrol.

The only scenario I would do this in is if I was in a terrifying area, with gangs hanging round the petrol station...in which case, I’d go somewhere else Hmm

Myselfonashelf · 28/11/2018 08:08

Mine are older now bit I used to just leave them in the car and walk inside to.pay. I would.opt to fill up at quiet times so not hanfing around in a long queue.

I'm surprised to read you can pay using an app considering most petrol stations have signs up saying not yo use your mobile phone!!

It's not much safer, taking your kids out of the car is much more dangerous. ROSPA confirm this, their advice is never have a child out of the car at a petrol station. Your child obviously wan't secured in her car seat properly.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 28/11/2018 09:35

Never took them out.

My first babies were twins, I couldn’t go into a petrol station, spend five minutes getting them out and into a buggy to walk across the forecourt and then back again. That would have been minimum 8 minutes instead of maybe 1 or 2.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 28/11/2018 09:36

And yes I did it in the summer time. And no my babies never got themselves out, I used to lock the car doors anyway.

Craft1905 · 28/11/2018 10:12

I would never leave my children alone in a car. I can't believe everyone saying they leave them. Mine are my 100 percent my priority so no I don't leave them alone in a car at any point.

If they are 100% your priority, why do you expose them to a much higher level of risk by taking them out of the car? My children's safety is my top priority, so they get left in the car.

Jasquers · 28/11/2018 10:51

Craft1905 . I'm obviously a terrible mother and you are the greatest. I hate this forum sometimes.......

I might actually do the research and write a risk analysis of this when I'm on mat leave! I guess some risks, such as exposure to pollutants is maybe subjective though?

Clavinova · 28/11/2018 12:18

I always used to take ds1 with me (pfb) but left ds2 in the car - only if I could use a pump within easy view of the shop/kiosk though.

I would point out that I once dropped a heavy bunch of keys on ds1's head when I was paying (he was in his car seat on the floor - too heavy to carry - no lasting damage thankfully) and another customer dropped a bag of sweets on him - so not totally safe! So many people buy hot drinks in petrol stations these days - I wouldn't leave a baby in their car seat on the floor of the shop whilst paying now.

Roofbox 👍

pigsDOfly · 28/11/2018 14:10

bonbonours Thank you. Grin

busybarbara · 28/11/2018 20:26

Let's think about this.. how often have you heard about a child dying on a forecourt? I can think of zero times.

How many times have I heard about a child dying from being left in a car? Lots of times including this week when a little girl drowned because the mum forgot to put the handbrake on.

So good luck to the car is safer crowd. It's not.

Pebblespony · 28/11/2018 20:35

The risk of drowning at my petrol station is zero. I checked. She stays in the car.

sonandhelpneeded · 28/11/2018 20:39

@busybarbara stop being so dramatic! It's not often that a petrol station has a river in it! Just do pay at pump or BPme!
