I’ve opened the door using a scarf and melted it around the handle andMr Polka is distraught and furious in equal measure. I know I’m an idiot - can I save it. Will insurance company cover it if not?! Plonker.
Can I get it off? Google suggests a razor blade scrape but co flirting advice on hot or cold surface ConfusedShock. Help me please

Is it cast iron or steel?

Polkapjs · 25/11/2018 11:37

Cast iron and my distress has clearly affected spelling. Conflicting advice about cleaning while hot or cold not flirting !

Bugger if it were tempered steel it would take emery.

The blade holders that take a Stanley blade would be ok but only cold stove, the handle is plastic.

Weedsnseeds1 · 25/11/2018 11:44

What material was the scarf and what is the handle?
Assuming some sort of polymer for the scarf, I'd cool it and try acetone ( cautiously if the handle is also polymer).
Then but an oven glove for future use

Polkapjs · 25/11/2018 11:46

Polyester scarf. Will buy a scraper and some acetone- B and Q? Thanks all

Polkapjs · 25/11/2018 12:05

Nice job you can barely see where it caught. Welding gauntlets are good too if you know any welders.

Don't the logs beside the stove smoulder?

It’s really dangerous to store your logs next to your stove. They could cause a fire.
Think about how hot the stove gets..... hot enough to melt your scarf...

Welding gauntlets from Screwfix and probably B+Q. (Other DIY sheds available). Great as they cover your wrists and protect jumpers or whatever.

crunchydatola · 25/11/2018 19:07

dried wood touching the hot stove looks super dodgy, sorry. Next to stove is one thing, but those look like they are in direct contact. Mine would smoulder for sure.

1tisILeClerc · 25/11/2018 19:09

Oven gloves are not really up to handling 'red' heat and could burn themselves if they are cotton.

sackrifice · 25/11/2018 19:10

My logs all get a good hour on top of the stove to dry them out fully. Then taken off and popped down the side.

Queenie8 · 25/11/2018 19:14

Definitely move those logs, they're touching the wood burner, and will over time get hot enough to ignite.

For the scrapes on the door, once it's cooled down - so tomorrow morning, use t-cut to polish it off.

Also, please ensure that you get your chimney swept yearly and you have a carbon dioxide monitor in the house.

SealSong · 25/11/2018 20:00

You need some proper stove gauntlets and for goodness sake move the logs away from the side of your stove! That is a house fire waiting to happen.

SealSong · 25/11/2018 20:01

Carbon monoxide monitor, Queenie, not dioxide.

dairyfarmerswife · 25/11/2018 20:06

Agree that logs touching the stove are a fire hazard - I wouldn't be able to sleep with them like that!

tothesea · 25/11/2018 20:14

My DH is a stove installer...never store logs beside your stove, it’s highly dangerous.
Also as PP says chimney sweep once a year and Carbon Monoxide alarm. He is always amazed at the risks people are prepared to take for the aesthetic look of a stove.

Queenie8 · 25/11/2018 20:14

@sealsong whoops 🤭

Polkapjs · 25/11/2018 20:40

Right. Thanks for the tips and I will move the logs pronto. New basket on order. And will get a new mitt. T-cut? Isn’t that something from cars? Off to Google
Thanks all. I was very scared this morning about if this could be fixed

Polkapjs · 25/11/2018 20:43

Carbon monoxide alarm fitted and we have a yearly sweep - they ring us when due

Polkapjs · 25/11/2018 20:50

Although I’ve just found a nice log holder in black steel...
