To ask how many jobs you've had?

How long have you been in the workforce and how many jobs have you had? What prompted each change of job?

I've been working 20 years and feel like I've had quite a high number of different jobs, so am curious to see how other people's careers have panned out. Will give my answers in the comments.

I’ve had four proper jobs since graduating 8 years ago, two of which are “career” jobs. Had two more at university, one of which was part of my degree course.

Each job has been due to relocation of country or city. DH is 34 and has had two jobs - the one he is in now will hopefully be the one he stays in. It’s a very niche role so there are so few companies that he can work for.

mycatplotsdeath · 25/11/2018 16:52

First job at 16
Had 5 job changes and am now 46

OlobobTop · 25/11/2018 16:56

Job 1 - 5 years - moved to another country
Job 2 - 1 year - all my visa would allow then I went back home
Job 3 (back to job 1 really) 6 months - went for somewhere the paid more money and more responsibility
Job 4 - 1 year 3 months - got a job I really wanted to do long term
Job 5 - 4 years and counting...no plans to leave

OlobobTop · 25/11/2018 16:58

My DP on the other hand has probably had about 100 jobs, he's almost 30.

  1. aged 14 evening work in a shop while at school. Left because my mum thought they were treating me poorly (they were, but I was happy with my £1 ph)
  2. Saturday job in shop from 15-18 when I went to uni.
  3. 18 - 21 loads of temp jobs, throughout uni, couldn’t possibly remember them all. One of them was sending out ‘millennium bug’ letters to customers of lifts.
  4. 21- 22 worked in a nightclub for a couple of years whilst doing temp day jobs again while I tried to find a graduate job.
  5. 23-24 went back to uni for teacher training. 6, 7 & 8) 24- 40 as a teacher in 3 different schools, with different responsibilities. one of them for 14years. Left as i couldn’t reconcile work and family life anymore.
  6. 40-now self employed. I run my own childcare business. I’ve been in the workforce for 30years.

2 years in supermarket during sixth form
Summer job after first year of uni. Quit a month before the end of the season because they wouldn't let me have time off for a family wedding.
Supermarket during second year of uni
Call centre during third year
Temp jobs of various lengths from one day to 9 months
9 month fixed term contract, both sides knowing I'd got a place to do a postgrad course after
Odd bits of temping while back at uni,
3 years freelancing while looking for permanent position (v competitive field)
Been in permanent job 8 years now and would love a change of direction but don't know what.

I'm 55, worked for the same public service employer since I was 20 - 8-10 different roles . I had 3 jobs before then including PT whist at college.

Parky04 · 25/11/2018 21:20

Working 32 years and 3 jobs

Job 1 14 years - redundant
Job 2 2 years - resigned
Job 3 16 years and still going strong!

Escolar · 25/11/2018 21:27

Holiday job at the same company for four years while I was at uni.
First proper job - nine years.
SAHM with a bit of freelancing - nine years.
Current job - four years and counting.

CantWaitToRetire · 25/11/2018 21:55

Saturday job for a few years while at school.

First full time job straight from leaving school, stayed 5 years and then resigned.

Went immediately to my current job and been here 31 years.

isdhjustlazy · 25/11/2018 22:11

Job 1- work experience which led on to weekend work, stayed for 3years and left when I got a full time job.

Job 2-first full time job, office based, boring as hell left after 3 years onto something more exciting or so I thought

Job 3- sounded great on paper in reality it was shit, money was excellent for a 21year old so managed to stay for 3years

Job 4- (my current job) been doing it for 12 years. I still love it even though I get abused daily but it's good fun. Going through major changes which is going to result in massive wage cuts so I'll need to see what the result of that is and decide if I'm
Staying or looking to move.

So 4 jobs since I left school 18 years ago.

Kemer2018 · 25/11/2018 22:15

About 100 I've lost count. 30 years of work.

FissionChips · 25/11/2018 22:18

16 jobs in 13 years . Blush

Saracen · 25/11/2018 22:57

Tons of casual and part-time and temp jobs until I was 23 - couldn't possibly list or count them. Only a few since then, not counting various stuff I've dabbled in on the side for a week or a few sessions.

tor8181 · 25/11/2018 23:32

technically 1 between 1-22

but as im a full time 24 carer(they are home educated) and being paid for it off the government(not much at £64 a week though) i class it as a job as their disabilities mean i cant work

i left work on sick leave at 22(bed bound due to severe morning sickness)but still technically in a job

had baby at 23 and i left(well they unlawfully fired me) to be a SAHM then officially became his paid carer(carers allowance) when he was 8 due to many disabilities

hes 14 now and im still his carer and will be for many years to come

i had another baby at 30,hes now 8 and his dad is official paid carer to him

but of course we look after both children together instead of saying you look after no 2 i look after no 1 child

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 25/11/2018 23:38

I had a YTS placement then two part time jobs and two stints of less than a week of telesales.
I got my first ever full time job this week, after almost 20 years as a sahp, and I cannot wait to start!
I finally feel like I am useful and worthwhile after all this time!

Notquiteagandt · 25/11/2018 23:42

11 im nearly 30.

That includes internships and summer jobs though too.
