To ask how many jobs you've had?

n0ne · 25/11/2018 10:27

How long have you been in the workforce and how many jobs have you had? What prompted each change of job?

I've been working 20 years and feel like I've had quite a high number of different jobs, so am curious to see how other people's careers have panned out. Will give my answers in the comments.

Worked for 30 years, had about 7 or 8 jobs.

soulrider · 25/11/2018 14:29

17 years post - university and I'm on job number 16 (I've not included anything before this)

Resigned 3 times, redundant once, the remainder were fixed/short term contracts.

Longest job was 7 years, shortest was 6 weeks - that was the redundancy

moonlight1705 · 25/11/2018 14:34
  1. Saturday job whilst at school
  2. Sainsburys in the holidays at uni
  3. Temping whilst saving for MA
  4. Part-time job whilst doing full time MA
  5. 3 month contract at Buckingham Palace
  6. Back to temping for 6 months
  7. A year as a trainee in my future career
  8. 4 years at one place
  9. Secondment for 1 year to another linked place
10. 1 year at the Head Office then made redundant. 11. Current job retraining in a different sector, will be 2 years by the time I've finished and doing a long distance MLitt alongside job.

I'm now 34 and have had some sort of job since 14.

pepperjack · 25/11/2018 14:35

needtoshutupandlisten · 25/11/2018 14:40

clowdyweewee · 25/11/2018 14:50

I'm 51 and have only ever been in teaching (no Saturday jobs as a teen or when I was at University.)

I have taught in 4 different primary schools and have been in my current school for 17 years.

whiteroseredrose · 25/11/2018 15:28

I'm 53. Worked in Sainsburys in 6th form and pub jobs in uni.

Nine jobs since then plus a few years as a SAHM.

speakout · 25/11/2018 15:30

Maybe 5 proper "grown up " jobs, lots of little part time, saturday, summer holiday as a student type jobs.

Haven't had a "job" since children were born 21 years ago.

Blacktoffeecat · 25/11/2018 15:30

Not counting teenage waitressing jobs:
Job 1 - 2 years, left to move closer to my parents
Job 2- 14 years- left for better pay and conditions and less travel
Job 3- 3 years so far.
I am 41.

blueskiesandforests · 25/11/2018 15:37

These days it's far more unusual to stay with one employee for 20+ years than to change jobs every 3-5 years.

Long ago I had to screen CVs for an employer and was told to screen out both people whod changed job too often (not just once but multiple times as it indicated drama) and anyone who hasn't changed jobs at all in the last decade, as they'd be stagnant and inflexible!

n0ne · 25/11/2018 15:43

Since I left the UK I haven't managed more than 2-3 years in one place, though, and I hate it. Hate jobhunting, CV-writing, interviewing, being the newbie, just to do it all again just when I know what I'm doing! I'd happily stay the next 20 years at one great place Sad

One job, for 10 years, since graduating and working full time. A few more part time before then;

  1. Cash in hand job as a teenager at a sports club. parents didn’t consider it a real job since no contract, cash in hand, not a great deal of money...but I loved it. Left after an incident left me embarrassed to go back. Wasn’t my fault, but everyone saw me upset about it.
  1. Telesales. I quit before they asked me to leave, because I was terrible at it.
  1. Supermarket. Weekends as a teenager during college.
  1. Full time work placement with bursary for a year during university.
  1. Full time job I’m still in now. Unlikely to move, since that’d involve relocating to work in the same field and I’m not prepared to do that.
blueskiesandforests · 25/11/2018 16:07

I've had 4 or 5 distinct careers (depending how you count).

I've had 8 "proper" jobs over 25 years, not including 6 months of temping in London or student jobs. Those 8 haven't all been full time, but substantial. It wasn't a job change every 3 years though, as for 8 years I was a Sahm aside from teaching evening classes two nights per week.

The reason for changing jobs was often, though not always, to change career direction entirely including retraining. Which isn't good CV building but hasn't appeared to matter!

The employer I have now actively seeks to keep employees right though their careers and is the first one it seems realistic to contemplate working for til retirement. Very large employer with a lot of flexibility to move sideways every few years if you want to, to avoid getting stagnant!

yogafailure · 25/11/2018 16:09

Various Christmas/Saturday jobs through uni. Teacher since 21...have been for 26 years now, in 3 regions and around 7 schools.

blueskiesandforests · 25/11/2018 16:10

n0ne is that because you keep changing countries as a trailing spouse?

ZiggyStardusters · 25/11/2018 16:14

31 years of work (goodness, how on earth did that happen!)

Job #1 - 5 years. Resigned (career development)
Job #2 - 10 years. Effectively pushed out, but took the opportunity to relocate.
Job #3 - 1 year. Stop gap job with horrible commute and no prospects.
Job # 4 - 15 years so far...found my niche!

soberexpat · 25/11/2018 16:19

21 years of work.

5 jobs. Now I run my own business.

OurMiracle1106 · 25/11/2018 16:27

1- voluntary left for internship position
2- internship- funding dried up to keep me after 10months.
3- corporate reception- lasted 12 weeks. Stress caused issues with my epilepsy. Left
4- temporary reception role.
5- temporary admin/reception role- the job I’m in now and was made permanent in 2 years ago after 5 months of temping.

I’ll only be looking to leave my current job if I move too far

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 25/11/2018 16:27

I’m 49

Job 1 - 2 years
Job 2 - 2 years - redundancy
Job 3 - 1 year - redundancy
Job 4 - 7 years - maternity
SAHM 15 years
Job 5 - 3 years
Job 6 - ongoing

OrcinusOrca · 25/11/2018 16:35

I'm 26 and had my first job at 15.

Job 1 - 18 months - broke up with ex who's parents owned the joint
Job 2 - six months, moved house
Job 3 - one day, hated it
Job 4 - three years, graduated
Job 5 - two years, was a FTC
Job 6 - one year, didn't stretch me as much as I expected and my manager was shite
Job 7 - been here six months. Probably be gone before two years unless we have success TTC by then. Here for specific experience but it's outside of the specialism I am trained in

DollyWilde · 25/11/2018 16:38

I’m 29. Since uni I’ve had 4 ‘real’ jobs - just handed in my notice for the fifth so will be 5 in 9 years when I start.

Have also had 5 part time jobs as a student.

RedPandaMama · 25/11/2018 16:42

I've had a fair few, including all my little jobs as a teenager! I'm 22.

1st job - delivering magazines and filling the inserts, age 13-15.
2nd - PA at a legal firm, just for a couple of months during the summer, age 16.
3rd - front of house bar and waitressing, loved this job despite the appalling (£3.68 an hour!) pay, age 16-20 on and off while at college and uni.
Job 4 - sales assistant in new build house sales, summer job, age 18.
Job 5 - seasonal bar work at uni, age 19.
Job 6 - worked for a well-known bakery, worst job I've ever had. Was treated horribly and refused maternity pay, age 20-21.
Job 7 - current job - new build house sales, absolutely love it despite difficult clients sometimes. Not what I want to do forever but it's good fun, flexible and well paid, been here 7 months.
Job 8 - tutoring, only have one student ATM, he's lovely. Just one night a week.

Plus volunteering at Brownies for a while.

foxtiger · 25/11/2018 16:48

7 that I put on my CV now, although that includes 2 lots of 2 very similar jobs for different official employers. Then 3 or 4 very brief temporary or summer jobs that don't feel relevant any more.
