Ice in white wine

I posted a while back about a wine waiter in a posh restaurant who wouldn't give me a separate glass of ice with my wine because he said it was sacrilege. Well I've just been watching Graham Norton and low and behold he has ice in his as well. AIBU in thinking if it's good enough for Graham it's good enough for me?

Always have ice in my white wine, I love it being cold and I like that I don’t get hangovers. I believe some white wine (for purists) is not meant to be so cold but I’ve never been refused ice. I am happily uncouth. I am the one drinking the wine, not the waiter.

masterandmargarita · 24/11/2018 10:11

I hope you didn't tip the waiter

DanglyEeerieOrnaments · 24/11/2018 10:19

I do this too, it might be 'sacrilidge' but I like what I like. Nobody else has to drink it like that if they choose not to.

TeachesOfPeaches · 24/11/2018 10:20

Normal in South Africa

CoughLaughFart · 24/11/2018 10:20

I wouldn’t put ice in wine personally, but we’re not talking about my wine - or the waiter’s. When he’s paying for the wine he can decide how to drink it. Until then, bring the bloody ice and remember it’s your job to do so!

ZeroFuchsGiven · 24/11/2018 10:23

Well I'm the opposite, I was actually asked last week if I wanted ice in my wine. I wouldn't dream of tainting a lovely glass of white like that.

TipseyTorvey · 24/11/2018 10:27

I always have ice in mine now. Idgaf what anyone thinks. The wine in bars and pubs is always too warm for my taste and I'm paying for it so I'll have it exactly how I want it thank you. I'm too old now to be cowed by snotty waiters thank goodness 😂.

PinkHeart5914 · 24/11/2018 10:30

Well I do agree it’s sacrilege to be honest but it was your wine and you were paying so the waiter had no business refusing!

kittypop · 24/11/2018 10:32

To be fair I wasn't paying for the wine - it was a works do but honestly, if I want ice I should be able to have it.

Graham probably has ice in his wind because it’s under hot studio lights.

I do sometimes because I only like white wine when it’s really cold and I drink it slowly and it warms up.

The waiter was an arsehole. Did you complain?

yumsy · 24/11/2018 10:37

I always have ice in my wine and I have eaten in some of the most exclusive and expensive restaurants in the world. No waiter has ever refused me ice!!

bringbackthestripes · 24/11/2018 10:38

If the wine isn’t chilled enough I will happily put a couple of ice cubes in it as I like it ice cold. He was rude to dictate how you should have your drink

Bigonesmallone3 · 24/11/2018 10:44

It's very common where I work, Iv even had can I have ice in my red wine 😱

SerenDippitty · 24/11/2018 10:49

I like my white wine well chilled but wouldn’t put ice in as that dilutes it. You might as well ask for a white wine spritzer.

Zorayda · 24/11/2018 10:49

Your drink, your choice! I freeze grapes in the summer to put in white wine. They don't dilute when they defrost like ice does when it melts and you can eat them after Grin

bunintheoven88 · 24/11/2018 10:51

What a cheeky sod! I was a waitress in a very nice hotel for years and our sommelier would have never been so rude 🙄

XiCi · 24/11/2018 11:58

The wine waiter was a complete and utter twat. I fail to see how he could actually refuse you ice though if you wanted it. Did you just accept it? I would have told him that I wanted the ice regardless and if refused again would have spoken to his manager.

XiCi · 24/11/2018 12:00

You might as well ask for a white wine spritzer
A cube of ice is hardly the same as having a glass of soda or lemonade added to your wine

HRTpatch · 24/11/2018 12:01

Annoys me when wine is not chilled properly.

MrsStrowman · 24/11/2018 12:07

I used to waitress in a high end restaurant as a student we had a couple come in regularly maybe three or four times a month, they would order a very expensive bottle of red (£400 roughly) and ask for a jug of lemonade for the table, you guessed it they mixed them. I thought it was crazy paying that much for wine then mixing it half and half with lemonade but I never said a word and nor did anyone else, it's their money their choice

Lucisky · 24/11/2018 12:13

I have ice in my white wine for several reasons; I like it really cold, it means I don't drink too much (because the ice takes up so much room) and it dilutes it so I don't feel tiddly too quickly. The only exception I will make is if it is an expensive bottle, but I generally buy cheaper stuff.
My absolute favourite is a white wine slush puppy on a hot day.

Gildashairflick · 24/11/2018 12:27

I have a piece of ice in my white wine as I like it really cold. I once had a barman outright refuse to put ice in as I would 'ruin' the wine. I did tell him what I thought of his opinion and reached over to the ice bucket and drowned my wine in lots of ice, smiling sweetly sarcastically as I paid. Little victory especially as it was a bog standard Pinot Grigio at £6 a glass not some 1923 Chablis!

kittypop · 24/11/2018 13:54

I didn't complain because my boss more or less agreed with him and I didn't want to look like a twat - had I been paying I would have insisted.

Ideal situation is properly chilled wine, but if the wine is too warm I'm not averse to putting in an ice cube or 2. I would rather have cold watery wine than warm undiluted.

GabriellaMontez · 24/11/2018 14:15

I do. It slows me down a bit.
