To not know how to clean my house?

WeirdHandDryers · 21/11/2018 11:26

I’ve never been house proud, wasn’t brought up to be but when DH and I bought our current house, I fell in love with it and want it to be clean and sparkly because for once, I’m proud of my house.
However, after years of not bothering, I don’t really know how.

So my main thing is the floors. I have a vikeda moo which is used to clean the kitchen floor of poo and piss (dog). Can I somehow clean the mop and do the rest of my floors with it or do I need a new mop?

Yes, I know I’m shit.

Teach the dog to go outside for a start!!

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 21/11/2018 11:28

Get a new mop. Is the dog a puppy?

WeirdHandDryers · 21/11/2018 11:28

Well yes obviously, it’s a work in progress

Get separate mops. I do my floors by hand so no idea whfst mops r good. My floors are massive too. I idea why I do that. I just do

WeirdHandDryers · 21/11/2018 11:29

Greatduck, no he’s 3 years old but has separation anxiety and no amount of taking him outside or walking him will stop him pissing on the floor as soon as he’s left.

Use kitchen roll for the dog mess otherwise you're just spreading dog mess germs all over your floors.
Put aside an hour a day to thoroughly clean a room and surface clean other rooms ( kitchen living room mainly because bedrooms don't really get dirty just untidy.)

Bananalanacake · 21/11/2018 11:30

Is the dog being house trained. On you tube I like to watch 'how clean is your house' some good tips there.

WeirdHandDryers · 21/11/2018 11:31

POI is cleaned up with Cilit band and kitchen roll, wee is wiped up with kitchen roll and the mop is used to clean the floor once all obvious mess has gone

I see. Could you crate him while you're out?

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 21/11/2018 11:31

Why is your dog using the floor as a toilet? Especially the kitchen? My mind totally boggles when people use the kitchen, of all places, to shut a pet or toilet train. Same with putting a litter box in there. Just why?!

Use a different mop. It's not thr best way to clean up from dog business anyway. Use a proper dog urine/mess cleaner to clean the affected areas: it's the only way to get rid of the scent etc properly anyway. Then clean the floor as you normally would AFTER taking care of the mess properly. Don't bloody mop it and spread, because that's what you're doing! Disinfect the bloody mop too.
Jeez.

Jaynesworld · 21/11/2018 11:41

Clean up with some anti-bacterial spray and kitchen roll. Once that has been cleaned go over with mop (that has some type of floor cleaner in the water). You do not need to replace the mop. Clean the mop routinely (every week/fortnight) by putting some bleach in some water and leave to soak.
Routine is key for maintaining a nice clean and tidy home. There are loads of sample house cleaning routines online to help you.

WeSaluteYou · 21/11/2018 11:54

If you’re mopping that often id get a mop where the mop heads can go in the washing machine. Such as a vileda spray mop - get spare heads. Mop the floor, chuck the head in the washing machine. Use different heads for floors that don’t have dog mess obviously to save you spreading germs around

Karwomannghia · 21/11/2018 11:58

A dog flap was invaluable for our elderly dog. Before that I would cover the floor in a waterproof table cloth and newspaper.
It was hard work bless her but she got the hang of the dog flap really well.
I would have 2 mop heads.

RosieStarr · 21/11/2018 11:59

Sounds like unless you deal with the dog’s anxiety any cleaning you do is going to be an ongoing battle. Take the dog to classes and learn how to teach the dog to be happy and calm, and invest in some puppy pads to help your floor.

Also, if the house is clean is there really a wrong way to do it?

Karwomannghia · 21/11/2018 12:00

Trip the kitchen is a room you can contain the dog in with a washable floor, whereas other rooms often have carpets.

motheroffourcats · 21/11/2018 12:07

I have an elderly cat, age 18 and he sometimes forgets to use to cat flap and go outside to our garden so occasionally he does his business on the kitchen floor near the cat flap. Old animals can apparently develop senile dementia. We have put a litter tray next to the cat flap as it is more convenient to change the litter tray rather than keep mopping our floor. I also want to but a steam mop but don;t want to waste money on one that turns out to rubbish. Any recommendations for a particular steam mop for a tiled kitchen floor gratefully received here too.

You need a Vera! You can fill with an antibacterial spray, get spare heads and chuck them in the washer. Use that for the daily/as needed clean after spot cleaning the messes and then a proper washing mop once a week with detergent to keep it all clean. www.bmstores.co.uk/products/vileda-spray-mop-308905

DaftCat · 21/11/2018 12:10

Have a look at this the organised mum method you could start with the ‘boot camp’ and then go on to the daily thing.
Could you leave puppy pads down for the dog?

motheroffourcats · 21/11/2018 12:10

In the meantime, OP I use a bottle of lemon antibac spray (supermarket own brands are good value for money) and cheap kitchen roll. I bag up the dirty kitchen roll in a nappy sack and that means the dirty stuff can go into our kitchen bin and not stink out the bin or the kitchen although DH prefers to put the bag of dirty stuff in a black bin liner in our back garden until the bag is full and then it get taken to the refuse tip.

sizeofalentil · 21/11/2018 12:12

Don't be put off by the twee name, but the Organised Mum Method saved my sanity! She tells you exactly what to clean each day.

Her product recommendations are great too.

Rixera · 21/11/2018 12:17

I'm useless at cleaning, but could my friend is a dog behaviourist. She helps dogs with trauma/separation anxiety, even adopted Romanian rescues and dogs from warzones who have been traumatised, even with things like the recent fireworks setting back all their training and it's honestly amazing the work she does. Could you afford or save for a dog behaviourist?

trulybadlydeeply · 21/11/2018 12:23

Crate for the dog. This will create a space for him where he feels safe and secure while you are out (make it comfy, favourite toys, treats etc, also cover it to make it dark). I am presuming that as he has such anxiety you are not leaving him for more than an hour or so at a time. Have you done much to address the anxiety? My previous dog was terrible but what worked well with her was ignoring her before we went out, then ignoring her for a while when we came back. This makes the contrast between you being there and not being there much less.

Sounds more like a DDog problem than a cleaning problem, but he'll get there.

speakout · 21/11/2018 12:27

kitchen floor of poo and piss (dog)

It's a dog problem.

Lucisky · 21/11/2018 12:38

I do wish the answer to every dog problem wasnt to shut it in a cage while you are out, and especially a dark covered one at that. I am not a great fan of crates, as you can probably tell, and I think they are misused a lot.
Op, how long are you leaving your dog for? There is nothing wrong with shutting him/her in the kitchen, but a dog needs training to accept being alone. You may have to start from scratch with this.
I have only got one mop, and yes, I did use it for poo and pee (after the worst had been removed). It is then washed in hot bleachy water, which I am sure kills the germs. But if you are more fussy than me, just keep one mop for accidents and get a new one for everything else.
