Go there once a week. Various staff but whenever this particular lady serves an Americano from the machine she positions an extra cup under it so you are getting a half strength coffee. No one else does it and you can really tell the difference. My hubby who gets the drinks is too polite to say anything!! This isn't right is it?!

Can't you report her and say what you have said here?...if you are paying for something, you expect to get the full thing, not a watered down version

StealthPolarBear · 19/11/2018 09:58

Does she then top it up with hot water? Sound s ideal to me, they're always too thick and strong for me. However you just need to complain your drink is too weak

BiscuitDrama · 19/11/2018 09:59

You should definitely say something. I don’t understand though, is she taking half of your coffee to drink herself?

CrabbyPatty · 19/11/2018 10:00

Just ask her to do the way you like. Don't report her. I'm sure you're not the first to make a request.

NotAnotherUserName5 · 19/11/2018 10:01

I don’t understand why she’s doing it though? A free cup of coffee for herself on you?

nikkylou · 19/11/2018 10:05

Some coffee shops do this occassionaly. I think it's a faster way of getting two shots out of a double.
However, if no one else in the store is doing this, then either the rest are not following procedure so she's the only "good" staff member. Or she's being tight and hoarding espresso for herself :).
You can either address it with the management of the cafe, which could go one of two ways (and have all your staff make your coffee weak or she'll make it properly) or
A) say you want to a double strength one when it's her on shift (and head tilt, they don't normally charge if she tries to charge you).
B) Call her out and say no one else does that. Can I have my coffee normal.
C) wait till you're at your table, then go up with your cup and complain it tastes much more watery than normal, can they make it again, ad infinitum until she adds your extra shot.

Alfie190 · 19/11/2018 10:09

Don’t understand what you mean. Puts a second cup under what? Do you mean she splits the portion?

iLoveFoood · 19/11/2018 10:09

She's doing it because the full shot is too strong for some people

Dogs she's hardly trying to 'steal' your coffee Hmm.

WorraLiberty · 19/11/2018 10:10

Report her rather than open his mouth and speak like an adult? Confused

OP, tell your DH it's not impolite to ask her not to do this.

iLoveFoood · 19/11/2018 10:11

Fgs *

The coffee handle/ thing has two sides in which the coffee comes out. Usually you put one mug under there and it will be quite Strong. Most of the time they use half of it and top it up with water. Otherwise the coffee is too strong and milk or sugar doesn't even make a difference.

DGRossetti · 19/11/2018 10:13

The do this in Costa too, from memory. It's how their recipe goes. They use two tamps of coffee, collect the full output from the first, and just half from the second - so 3 shots in all.

Have you tried asking her to give you the full whack ?

Are they grinding the coffee fresh, and loading a tamper with it, or is it a bean-2-cup machine ?

WeeDangerousSpike · 19/11/2018 10:13

Wait till she does it, then say "excuse me, why are you only giving me half the coffee?"
If she says that's the right way, say no one else has ever done it that way, and can you have all the coffee please, like the other staff do it.

bookmum08 · 19/11/2018 10:14

Maybe that was how she was taught to make it. Unless someone points it out she won't know she is doing it 'wrong'. Being a retail worker she probably had half a days training. (Not dissing retail workers. I was one for many many years)

StealthPolarBear · 19/11/2018 10:17

Can't we go back to jugs of filter coffee? How are these silly, fiddly machines better?

ilovesooty · 19/11/2018 10:20

Just ask her to give you the full shot. I don't see what the problem is.

iLoveFoood · 19/11/2018 10:23

If she gave you the entire pump full that would be 2 shots. It's really very simple. 2 shots resulting in stronger tasting coffee. If you want 2 shots then all you need to do is ask, she cannot read your mind
Most people take one shot ie. what's she's giving you (half the 'pump')

LanceStatersGold · 19/11/2018 10:24

If it’s coming out a double handle it’s two shots. If you’re ordering a small then it probably is only supposed to have one shot of espresso. (Medium = 2 large = 3. Drinks like cappuccinos start at two shots for a small).

I’d suggest asking for two shots/ an extra shot if you know she’s going to be making it.

iLoveFoood · 19/11/2018 10:38

Blaming the woman for doing her job incorrectly when really you just don't have a bloody clue Grin I would love to see the look on her face if you asked her to give you the 'entire' coffee

Notacluewhatthisis · 19/11/2018 10:40

If the machine has 2 spouts. It's meant to have 2 cups and holds double the amount of coffee.

It's actually the other staff that are doing it wrong

Antigon · 19/11/2018 10:48

I only drink coffee rarely (a latte or cappuccino) but I love the jargon ... two tamps of coffee, bean to cup, shots of coffee etc.

Birrdy · 19/11/2018 10:49

I don't see how she would care if anyone asked her not to do this it's such a meh issue.

StealthPolarBear · 19/11/2018 10:49

Does that lead to a lot of waste, particularly on days where you might have one person asking for a coffee and then another ten mins later? You'd end up throwing loads out

Kewqueue · 19/11/2018 11:07

An Americano is one shot of espresso with hot water added. If this isn't what you want you should ask her, not report her!

allhdghd · 19/11/2018 11:12

Just buy a jar of Nescafé and go home

DGRossetti · 19/11/2018 11:13

When they do it in Costa, yes - you lose half of a tamp of coffee ? Presumably the cost per tamp is so small as to make any attempt to roll that shot into the next drink uneconomic ? (Especially since the next drink might be a different blend, or a decaff Hmm)

Even at retail prices, a tamp of coffee with decent supermarket beans is about 10p - and I bet they're paying a lot less for their beans than £3.50/227g
