To be livid that Asda replaced Gaviscon with tinned pineapple

cheesemongery · 18/11/2018 21:27

and it wasn't even on the substitute list, I've only just noticed - shopping was delivered an hour ago - thought we just had a random tin of pineapple.

I'm suffering from terrible heartburn, usually need Omeprazole or ranitidine to prevent gastritis, thought would make do with Gaviscon until tomorrow.

Is it me or is it a sick joke? What's the most acidic thing we can put in.

I know AIBU for wanting to cry but I want to go to bed and it really hurts.

Someone is taking the piss, that’s ridiculous!

MrSlant · 18/11/2018 21:29

Amazingly (and you are going to have to trust me on this one as someone who has horrible heartburn) the enzyme in pineapple is actually brilliant at curing heartburn. It was my saviour in my last pregnancy. Hold on and I'll find you a link. Weirdly I think they have someone pretty clued up doing substitutions for once.

BadgerWithRice · 18/11/2018 21:29

That’s a bit cruel. Have you tried some milk or yoghurt as an interim fix?

Lovingbenidorm · 18/11/2018 21:29

If you’ve really got nothing else milk might help. Sorry you’re in pain

FoxBoxRox · 18/11/2018 21:29

I got a bag of raisins instead of fresh tangerines once Hmm

MrSlant · 18/11/2018 21:31

Oh, on googling apparently canning can remove the bromelain (beneficial enzyme) so step away from the can. So close, shame.

sackrifice · 18/11/2018 21:32

The reason acidy things help is that it closes the hole that lets the acid back up, rather than neutralises it which is what gaviscon does.

When I am in a fix, I have a small amount of apple cider vinegar in water, it really helps.

Hassled · 18/11/2018 21:33

Well it's sort of funny except I'm not suffering from heartburn and it's clearly shit for you. WTF were they thinking?

Years ago there was a supermarket substitutions thread and someone had ordered something like Woodland Eggs, and instead was sent a wooden owl. This is the same level of random madness.

MrSlant · 18/11/2018 21:33

If you are really stuck your own saliva is also a good protector so start thinking juicy thoughts and keep swallowing (not taking the piss I promise, I have really suffered and am now expert level in emergency reflux maintenance). Good luck.

CandyMelts · 18/11/2018 21:35

If it's not on the substitute list it's just a cock up, free pineapple what's not to like

OoohSmooch · 18/11/2018 21:36

We got spring onions instead of avocado from tesco this week.....

cheesemongery · 18/11/2018 21:41

Not touching the pineapple when prone to gastritis. Started a new course of tablets last week which cause dry mouth and oh - acid reflux (marvellous) so struggling to salivate.

Just had a massive go at the woman on the phone who says it is a genuine mistake... Really? The tinned pineapple is kept next to the Gaviscon?

Told her Asda is now on Mumsnet and read out some replies.

It is so not funny, I'm going to cry! I drink tons of milk and eat yoghurt but the pain doesn't ease.

Need to go work tomorrow, walk 3 miles which always makes it worse, will go via chemist and overdose on ranitidine.

I do just think it is a sick joke. Especially Gaviscon £4, tin of pineapple - ?? 50p?

cheesemongery · 18/11/2018 21:44

I'm usually a fan of random supermarket substitution threads - ordered a kettle? Here, have a toaster.

It's not really free pineapple, it's cost me £4. I haven't looked closely, maybe it was shipped direct from erm where pineapples grow.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 18/11/2018 21:44

First and last time I ordered from Holland and Barrett online I ordered coconut oil (for skincare) and got organic cherry nectar.
OP- any mints in the house? I find extra strong are almost as good as a gaviscon.

cheesemongery · 18/11/2018 21:45

Oh, on googling apparently canning can remove the bromelain (beneficial enzyme) so step away from the can. So close, shame.

Good call though, worth a try (not that I was going to touch the stuff)

Weirdly I got a tin of pineapple as a freebie this week. Are you sure its an actual substitute?
I'd laugh but I'm 31 weeks pregnant and can't remember the last day I didn't have to resort to copious amount of gaviscon Sad

cheesemongery · 18/11/2018 21:48

No mints I'm afraid - think I'll just head off to bed with me 6pt of milk...

Chug it all over me face.

Oo-er maybe it is just a promo and they forgot my gaviscon!

On my list it said promo and leaflet - I got 2 protein shakes as a promo, and a leaflet...

Apologies to the lady on the phone if it was free pineapple feels sheepish if so

Not that it solves my raging heartburn problem.

AutumnCrow · 18/11/2018 21:53

Are you sure they charged you for the Gaviscon?

Mind you, the woman on the phone could have cleared at up.

Sympathies about the reflux Flowers

NoodleEatingPoodle · 18/11/2018 21:53

Do you have any baking soda in the house?

Smsmeeesmeghhhehead · 18/11/2018 21:54

Lay off the dairy...it contains lactic acid which can aggravate the condition. Try water x

NoodleEatingPoodle · 18/11/2018 21:54

YouTheCat · 18/11/2018 21:55

I get heartburn when I'm dehydrated.

This week I ordered a new loo brush not getting into that debate from Sainsbury and they subbed a bottle brush instead.

cheesemongery · 18/11/2018 22:03

Hi Crow, yes they did and have refunded it.

No baking soda in the house either (is that bad?).

I didn't know about the milk thank you, maybe that's one of my problems, I do like to neck a lot when problems flare up.

Bottle brush just made me laugh - for your teeny tiny toilet? Grin

Oh well, see what tomorrow brings.

I'm prone to gastritis after having to take a lot of whajjamacallit - diclofenic for a back injury and my poo went black as stomach bleeding, so have to be careful now i.e no asprin, ibuprofen, dissovable (my mind has gone blank) co-codoamol for pain.

Can usually stomach most things on a good day, the pineapple just tipped me over the edge.

cheesemongery · 18/11/2018 22:05

soluble I think is the word.

Anyway, I'm going to calm down and go to bed with a crappy book to send me to sleep.

Thank you for the replies and tips, have some flowers all of you Flowers
