To be livid that Asda replaced Gaviscon with tinned pineapple

and it wasn't even on the substitute list, I've only just noticed - shopping was delivered an hour ago - thought we just had a random tin of pineapple.

I'm suffering from terrible heartburn, usually need Omeprazole or ranitidine to prevent gastritis, thought would make do with Gaviscon until tomorrow.

Is it me or is it a sick joke? What's the most acidic thing we can put in.

I know AIBU for wanting to cry but I want to go to bed and it really hurts.

Ginger tea is good .

DaysOfCurlySpencer · 18/11/2018 22:07

Lemon juice in warm water may help. I take it, also apple cider vinegar in water as an emergency although I don't use it for everything as some people do.

I do prefer the lemon juice and don't like the side effects of the ranitidine etc. so only resort to that when desperate. I have some Colpermin which helps although sold for IBS, it does make everything else taste odd though.

Personally I find milk worsens mine when it's bad. Took ages to work it out too as everyone kept telling me to drink it, so do bear it in mind for the future. Not much help for now I know, but it is a known problem albeit not a very common one.

Actual bromelain tablets with a high dose really really helped me until they were removed under guidance from the EU (I think it was them) the ones you can still get are no use unfortunately as not strong enough.

You poor thing! Toothpaste has worked for me when the antacids ran out.

Dodie66 · 18/11/2018 22:12

No dairy. Milk causes problems for me. If you are drinking that much it might be what’s causing your problem rather than curing it. I sip warm water when its bad and it helps

Pineapple or papaya enzyme really has been the most effective thing for my heartburn. You can get it in Holland and Barrett.

Unicyclethief · 18/11/2018 22:24

Also I thought milk was a common culprit? I would give that a rest for a while.

lisasimpsonssaxophone · 18/11/2018 22:41

I once ordered a packet of king prawns and it was substituted for a four-pint of milk!

The delivery guy was so rude when I queried it. He just sighed and said ‘no, they wouldn’t have done that’, snatched the list back from me and then stared at it for a bit before sheepishly going ‘err well, um, yes, that is a bit weird...’ Hmm

Chwaraeteg · 18/11/2018 22:41

I had a terrible time with heartburn after taking ibuprofen for too long while awaiting dental treatment. Weirdly, one day I ate pineapple and it stopped (I had been prescribed gaviscon and omeprazole previously, neither of which was helpful). Give it a go maybe?

Becca19962014 · 18/11/2018 23:29

Omeprazole capsules didn't help me at all, but the tablets did!

LadyPasserine · 18/11/2018 23:32

Fresh lemon squeezed into a pint of water. It metabolises really quickly into a high alkaline state. Works wonders.

HildaZelda · 18/11/2018 23:37

My friend once ordered some Haribo fizzy sweets for her child's birthday and received Berroca effervescent tablets as a substitute!

Tigger365 · 18/11/2018 23:43

Peppermint capsules from doctor, possibly Tesco, and I think Holland and Barrett are potentially the most amazing thing for acid and/or IBS. Tesco also do some fruity rennies (£2ish for 24/48?) again, they’re better and cheaper than gaviscon, just for future reference.

Flowers OP, feel better

CaptainCabinets · 18/11/2018 23:44

I felt sorry for you until you said you had a go at some poor woman at Asda Customer Services as if she had personally packed your shopping. Being rude gets you absolutely nowhere!

Mix some baking soda and water, drink it and go to bed. Smile

CowCuddler · 18/11/2018 23:57

I also suffer with constant heartburn and take Omeprazole daily. Can't eat pineapple without really suffering.

I'd be emailing CS and asking what kind of idiot thought that canned fruit is a suitable substitute for medicine Angry
