We may not like her but who is fit to replace her?

Just seen a photo of BoJo having dinner last night with Farage. Chummy. So, some - lots?- of Tories want to replace May. Imo there is nobody I'd trust to replace her. Johnson? Proven liar. Rees Mogg? Worryingly Chauvinistic to say the least. Gove? Heaven forbid. So if they do manage to "knife her in the front", who could be an acceptable replacement?

Terrifying thought who might end up in number 10, isn’t it?

AlexaShutUp · 17/11/2018 10:34

There is nobody to replace her in the Tory party. At least, nobody who has the faintest chance of getting elected by the party.

Unfortunately, there is nobody to replace her from the opposition benches either.

We are in a leadership vacuum with no prospect of any way out.

Sirzy · 17/11/2018 10:36

That’s my view. Don’t like the woman but at least she has she she is dedicated to seeing things through and isn’t running off like Cameron did when he lit the touch paper.

She is in an impossible position but I can’t see anyone wanting to take on the poisoned chalice, or doing any better.

IceRebel · 17/11/2018 10:37

I don't think there's anyone else to replace her.

I still amazed that she's plodding on despite all the shit she has had to deal with. I'm not a betting person, but I would wager if any of the others lined up ready to take her place were currently in her position they would have quit ages ago.

Terribletrampolinist · 17/11/2018 10:41

The woman’s certainly got stickability and I do have a degree of admiration for her. Although why she can’t just say it’s untenable and cancel the whole sorry shit show is beyond me.

MrsStrowman · 17/11/2018 10:42

I'm not a fan of hers but I do respect the mindset she's taken over this, she was handed a poison chalice, she was pro remain and has had to deal with the most ridiculous childish behaviour from her own party and the opposition, none of whom seem keen to do it suggest anything that's actually constructive, while trying to keep an almost impossible task on track. A lot of people would've walked away.

LanceStatersGold · 17/11/2018 10:49

There is no one. And changing now could/would purely make the situation even more laughable/difficult/unmanageable etc. And I can’t stand her but Rees Mogg, who I think we would get it, would be disastrous on every level.

Labour Party wise, I think Corbyn has done all the good he can. Both parties now need to start looking to their younger MPs. I think Chuku Umuuna would be a great start...

longwayoff · 17/11/2018 11:02

Urgh. Maybe not Chukka who's a bit too self regarding imo. But who? as you say Corbyn's over really, the Lib Dems chucked their goodwill out of the window, the Tories consumed by in fighting and Boris cosying up to people like Farage and Steve Bannon. It's very worrying.

TeddyIsaHe · 17/11/2018 11:07

For all JC’s fault I’d rather him any day over the basted Tories. How anyone can read he recent UN report and willingly vote for them absolutely baffles me. I’m slowly cutting all Tories out of my life because I just cannot associate myself with people who vote for them and their disgusting, inhumabe policies.

The Brexit shitshow is just the icing on the cake really.

JudasPrudy · 17/11/2018 11:08

I've actually grown to like May quite a lot. She's a remainer and she's played the long game. No one else would allow a second referendum; TM might.

Neolara · 17/11/2018 11:09

I think that even if the conservatives did elect a new leader (presumably a harder Brexiteer) and then miraculously renegotiate a harder Brexit (highly unlikely given the EU's stance), when they came back to parliament, they would be in exactly the same position that Theresa May is in now. The DUP wouldn't back it. Labour wouldn't back it. Soft Brexiteer wouldn't back it. Remainders wouldn't back it. It's just stalemate.

PedunculatedPolp · 17/11/2018 11:10

See I think Jo Johnson will be the next prime minister as he is smarter, better looking than his older brother and also not tainted. He is positioning himself well.

AnneLovesGilbert · 17/11/2018 11:10

Chukka’s got some hidden secrets. He pulled out of the last labour leadership election with some complete crap about not realising the toll it would take on his family life and something about “scrutiny”. He speaks very well though I agree he doesn’t half rate himself but he won’t put himself forward again.

AnneLovesGilbert · 17/11/2018 11:12

Jo Johnson seems well respected and capable. People I know who’ve worked with him say he’s very different to his brother and gets things done.

desertmum · 17/11/2018 11:15

it's a nightmare - there is no-one to take over and like others I do respect her for taking the position. All the leavers took a HUGE step back when the position became vacant. Not sure who would be worse Johnson or Corbyn. It's actually quite scarey to think they might want to replace her at this point.

ForalltheSaints · 17/11/2018 11:18

If there is vote of confidence next week Theresa May will win. The only question is about by how much.

As to who is good enough to replace her, the only person good enough in the Conservative Party is not a potential candidate, Ruth Davidson.

citiesofbismuth · 17/11/2018 11:18

This is why our system of government can never be effective. Selecting who should run the country needs to be an intelligently conducted process, not this shit show. I've never known it to be as bad as this and I lived under Thatcher. Staggering from one five year term to another in a blindfolded incompetent state is bound to end in disaster.

The 70s will look positively fun compared to what we're being dragged in to now. They should all be stuffed into coffee sacks and dropped into the Atlantic. Bunch of egotistical self serving narcissists, and I include Corbyn in this description.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 17/11/2018 11:23

You have to admire her mettle.
I think in different circumstances had she not been handed the Brexit fiasco she might have made some impact in domestic issues rather than being consumed in all this nonsense.
There is very much an echo of 'the lady's not for turning ' about her.

m0therofdragons · 17/11/2018 11:24

I've accepted boris will be pm during my lifetime. I've stocked up on gin.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 17/11/2018 11:32

Keir

He speaks with authority and isn’t so involved in self promotion

I think his appeal will be more across the population

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 17/11/2018 11:32

Keir Starmmer

lljkk · 17/11/2018 11:34

Gove will get in, I reckon. He's not as slimy as Bojo.

abigailsnan · 17/11/2018 12:22

I can hand on heart say that 20ish years ago I could name all the top ranking MPs and knew their strengths & weakness's.
Now I just wouldn't know who is who they are on that merry-go-round of am I a MP or am I not and who do I support this week

StrumpersPlunkett · 17/11/2018 12:31

I honestly think the great british public are as divided as the government.
We don’t have an option that will settle the hideous divide we have nationally.
The brexit result was so close.
If there was another referendum I would like it to be if you want to cut all ties vote if you don’t vote we will assume you support remain.
I would love to see what the outcome would be

StrumpersPlunkett · 17/11/2018 12:35

28% of eligible voters didn’t vote.
Add that to the remain vote and none of this nonsense would be happening and the government could be getting on with sorting out our major domestic problems.
