We may not like her but who is fit to replace her?

Just seen a photo of BoJo having dinner last night with Farage. Chummy. So, some - lots?- of Tories want to replace May. Imo there is nobody I'd trust to replace her. Johnson? Proven liar. Rees Mogg? Worryingly Chauvinistic to say the least. Gove? Heaven forbid. So if they do manage to "knife her in the front", who could be an acceptable replacement?

What a shame it's come to this point. ALL political leaders of the last 20-30 years bear responsibility for this shambles. Brown/Blair had the opportunity to limit immigration, but they chose not to. All parties for 30 years have ignored all the areas outside London/SE hence the high brexit votes in the regions and the Scottish referendum/independence issues. We're a divided nation. Whatever happens with Brexit, the politicians need to concentrate on the "forgotten" regions and be less London-centric if they hope to unite the nation again.

Badbadbunny · 17/11/2018 12:40

28% of eligible voters didn’t vote. add that to the remain vote

Why? Who's to say they all wanted to remain? Why not add it to the leave vote or split them 50:50? You can't just assume they'd all have voted to remain.

Vvmevvme · 17/11/2018 12:47

I don’t agree with the deal but I like her, she’s a workhorse who isn’t going to give in to personality politics, she’s shit at PR and playing the game, and that’s all for the good. She’s a decent human being from all accounts, and I know all Tories are evil soul sucking monsters Hmm but she is from those who know her.

There is no replacement. She was handed an impossible task and is doing her best. We can’t have a 2nd referendum, we can’t be in that weak a position with an institution that will fail anyway eventually.

The boys should all stop dick waving and sort out a doable trade deal, but it’s unlikely.

Catpyjama · 17/11/2018 12:52

Amber Rudd?

Agree with some of the pps-I have no political love for TM whatsoever, but have to respect the character she's shown as all these lying, overweening men have flaked off around her.

Catpyjama · 17/11/2018 12:56

I do think it's her or a general election-and then maybe still her. The rest of her party need to pull the fuck together and do some work for a change.

ShadyLady53 · 17/11/2018 12:56

I’ve been saying it for months but I absolutely believe from how things have been in the media for ages now that they are lining up Rees Mogg to be the next PM ☹️.

I highly doubt JCs Labour could win an election within the next year. The Lib Dem’s aren’t strong enough for a Leadership election. Think we’ll have a Conservative government for a while. TM isn’t great by any means but she’s not as dangerous as many others in her party.

Tippexy · 17/11/2018 13:05

@StrumpersPlunkett

Actually it’s the other way round. If you don’t vote you are presumed to agree to the decision of the majority vote of those who do.

StrumpersPlunkett · 17/11/2018 13:09

I think if you are passionate about change you go out and vote, if the status quo is suiting you, you are less motivated to go out and vote.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 17/11/2018 14:56

I can see Amber Rudd becoming leader

She was very impressive in the referendum

Picnictime · 17/11/2018 15:17

I wasn't a fan before but I have some serious admiration for TM for keeping going and I do believe trying to do the best in a pretty impossible situation. I hope they don't get enough letters pf NC and if they do I hope TM wins. The last thing we need right now is a leadership change.
Everyone else needs to stop protecting/furthering their careers and get on with the job they are employed to do!

Firstbornunicorn · 17/11/2018 15:23

@lljkk really?! Is there anyone less slimey than a fish man?

InspectorIkmen · 17/11/2018 15:25

See I think Jo Johnson will be the next prime minister as he is smarter, better looking than his older brother and also not tainted. He is positioning himself well

It comes to something when this is the ONLY glimmer of hope in a sea of gloom doesn't it. We are in the position we are in precisely because there is barely a handful of decent electable politicians currently active.
I couldn't vote for Corbyn especially given his fondness for La Abbott and that fool McDonnell.
Gove? Doesn't bear thinking about.
BoJo - way to get Farage in via the back door.
Rees-Mogg? The thought is so terrifying I can't even think about it.

It's a horrible situation - really horrible.

ForalltheSaints · 17/11/2018 15:27

I think the Windrush scandal put paid to Amber Rudd's chances.

JustDanceAddict · 17/11/2018 15:29

I’m channelling my inner ostrich on this one I’m afraid. I voted remain and have been concerned ever since.
Hate Corbyn, May is in an awful position (I’m no Tory but she’s prob best of a bad bunch).

VeniVidiViciTwice · 17/11/2018 15:34

I actually have a bit of respect for TM (though hate the fucking Conservative party).

However, what I have seen/read/heard, agree that Keir Starmer would be good in the position of leader of the country.

greendale17 · 17/11/2018 15:34

I've actually grown to like May quite a lot.

^Me too

StellaWouldYouTakeMeHome · 17/11/2018 15:37

Corbyn

HirplesWithHaggis · 17/11/2018 15:50

"As to who is good enough to replace her, the only person good enough in the Conservative Party is not a potential candidate, Ruth Davidson."

If she makes it south of the border, you'll find out how useless she is. Good for a soundbite or sitting on tanks, not so good on communicating with her constituents or having, you know, actual policies. Or, having come to a political decision, sticking by it.

They're doing a good job poster-girling her, but there's no substance.

RangeRider · 17/11/2018 15:52

We may not like her
Speak for yourself, some of us do like her.

seventhgonickname · 17/11/2018 16:00

I also suspect her of playing the long game.No one wants the current proposal. She is pushing and persuading so that no can accuse her of not trying. The EU states are refusing more negotiating so TM mayreluctantly call fir another referendum. The choices the current proposal, leave the Eu.,remain.This cuts the leavers and guess what TM was for remain

I may be wrong but she has stuck at it and looks a lot fresher than a lot of our previous PMs during a sticky ride.I wouldn't like to play poker with her.
There is no tenable replacement atm and no one who really wants to take responsibility for the shit show .

LakieLady · 17/11/2018 16:07

Amber Rudd has a wafer-thin majority which she is expected to lose next time round. Hastings is a very deprived area and has been crippled by austerity, and she doesn't appear to give a shit about what goes on there. Even Tory councillors don't seem to have much time for her.

I don't think that the support she gets from the Tory-supporting rural parts of the constituency can outweigh that. I predict that she'll lose her seat and get kicked upstairs to the Lords as payback for taking one for the team over the Windrush fiasco.

needmorespace · 17/11/2018 16:14

What's this about her being 'handed a poisoned chalice' and 'handed the brexit challenge'? She put herself forward for it - she wanted it.
I feel no pity for her - her party and it's duty to itself has got us in to this almighty mess.
There is no satisfying the tories on this issue. They are done.
I totally agree with the poster above who said they were cutting all tories out of their life. The UN report is sobering reading. As the parent of a disabled child I have watched over the last few years as the most vulnerable in this country have been fucked over by the tories. How people can vote for them I can never never understand

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 17/11/2018 16:16

Right now is not the time to start messing around with prime ministers. The alternatives are even more shocking but most of all a new pm would mean. Starting negotiations all over again.

Sethis · 17/11/2018 16:16

Replacing her won't solve the problem that Brexit is unworkable.

There is literally no way to accomplish it without inflicting decades worth of economic damage, even beyond that we've already seen.

bofsy1 · 17/11/2018 16:20

Having no Agreement is totally unworkable for all of us (bar the nutty ERG), think about that.
