just stretch the hose over your sodding car

I don't fill the car with fuel that often as it's mainly just used for around time.

Every time I go to the petrol station the access is blocked by people queuing for a pump on the "correct" side of their car.

If I can stretch the hose over my mum-bus people carrier, you can stretch it over your ford fiesta.

Petrol station etiquette should definitely be on the driving test.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 16/11/2018 15:50

(It doesn’t impede the pump in front if they are tandem pumps)

PrincipalVernon · 16/11/2018 15:50

I used to use any pump but the last time I did I got black crap all over my jeans from pulling it across.
Now I wait, but I don’t drive until the petrol light comes on so if the station is busy I just go another time

xyzandabc · 16/11/2018 15:50

Absolutely. I have a largeish people carrier, never come across one that won't reach. It doesn't have to be a high up overhead pipe, the retractable ones at ground level work just as well.

I pull forward a little further than normal and then pull the hose round the back of the car, never over the top, so no need to be tall and no chance of fuel going on paintwork.

Sisgal · 16/11/2018 15:50

Tesco fuel station at me is always fuckin busy, and the queues are ridiculous

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 16/11/2018 15:50

Exactly fridaydreamer

Satsumaeater · 16/11/2018 15:50

Dear OP, they don't always stretch far enough. It depends on the petrol station and indeed the particular pump.

I will stick to parking on the correct side for my car.

PeevedOfPortishead · 16/11/2018 15:51

Can never remember which side I fill up on. So I park wherever is free and have never, ever encountered a non-stretch hose. Tbh I have more problems figuring out it's a pump you have to select where to pay at. Those buggers catch me out every time as I stand there thinking "FFS authorise it!".

Lavende · 16/11/2018 15:54

Tried this. Couldn’t pull it far enough. Then it got caught on the back windscreen wiper. Then I dropped it. Looked like a fucking dick head. I’ll wait thanks.

Willow2017 · 16/11/2018 15:55

Drives me mad too. You dont need to stretch it over the car at all just round the back of it. Just park car properly beside it. I have a people carrier too and manage fine. Why is it any trouble to pull the hose behind the car and put it in? (Health issues aside) Takes seconds.

Our local Morrison's has a sharp turn into the petrol station and it can block the road when idiots all queue up for the same pump.

Just move over there are 8 sodding pumps ffs!

SoupDragon · 16/11/2018 15:57

I was told not to at my local petrol station by the attendant. So, maybe hold your whinging.

PattiStanger · 16/11/2018 16:00

The Tesco near me always has queues, that's not unusual is it?

I couldn't even guess how many 100s of petrol stations I've been too and I have never found one that won't reach, I call BS on the poster who said that unless they go to some 1950s single pump in the middle of nowhere.

Pet hate of mine too, the whole process would be speeded up if the system was that if you didn't go to a free pump the person behind queue jumped you.

TheRenegadeMaster · 16/11/2018 16:01

I'm way too short to reach, and not strong enough.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 16/11/2018 16:01

@Banterlope It's amazing how few people know about that little arrow, though. It seriously blew my best mate's mind when I pointed it out to her! She now makes a point of asking people if they know about it, which makes me laugh; very few do, according to her...

FullOfJellyBeans · 16/11/2018 16:02

Last time I tried stretching it across it didn't reach - I'm sure I could have reached it if I'd lined the car up perfectly but it's not worth the hassle and embarrassment of trying so I just wait.

megletthesecond · 16/11/2018 16:04

It didn't work the time I tried it, it was too much of a stretch. I didn't feel like the pipe was securely in the petrol tank hole.
So I've gone back to waiting for one on "my" side to be free.

BollocksToBrexit · 16/11/2018 16:05

I'm disabled and find it hard enough to fill up on the right side. So I'll carry on just as I am thanks.

On a tangent, I only discovered recently that you can lock the pump trigger thingy once it's squeezed so that you don't have to keep squeezing as you fill up. 30 years of driving and I never knew.

RangeRider · 16/11/2018 16:07

It's amazing how few people know about that little arrow, though
News to me!
But anyway, ask yourself OP if your life span is really going to be increased dramatically by everyone flinging hoses around? Probably not. Why not spend the waiting time congratulating yourself on being able to use any pump or thankful that they've not run out of petrol? Or dusting the inside of your car, polishing the rearview mirror etc. It'll be better for your blood pressure

SummerStrong · 16/11/2018 16:07

@BollocksToBrexit you have taught me something new today I can't wait to try it!

donquixotedelamancha · 16/11/2018 16:08

Those hoses will scratch your car.

Have considered keeping hold of one end as you pull the soft rubber hose round the back?

It will probably work better for you than throwing the metal nozzle at the car and hoping for the best.

AuntyJackiesBrothersSistersBoy · 16/11/2018 16:12

I’ve got bad arthritis in my wrists and elbows and don’t have the “grip and pull” I used to have...😉. So, I have to wait and make others wait with me. Sorry about that!

ADastardlyThing · 16/11/2018 16:14

Seen too many people struggle and look like pillocks, don't want to be one of them, so nope! Not for me.

MrsStrowman · 16/11/2018 16:16

I snapped my flap doing this, so I don't recommend it.

Well that sounds painful

TokyoSushi · 16/11/2018 16:16

I'm very much in the camp of 'people who will only use the correct side are ridiculous' but us fly by the seat of our pants, chancers are at a huge advantage as the queue is much quicker!

cricketmum84 · 16/11/2018 16:16

@BollocksToBrexit what wait now you can do what??? How did I never know this!

countrygirl99 · 16/11/2018 16:20

I'm short, I have small hands, when I'm towing I use a big 4x4. I use a wide variety of petrol stations. I have never had a problem reaching the "wrong " side with the hose. But those that don't want to keep on as you are - it leaves pumps free for me to queue jump😁
