To ask if Amazon would accept this return?

I bought a book on Amazon for my studies. Fairly expensive, £26. My plan was to read it then return it but the book came wrapped in clear foil. I know it's naughty but I can't afford this book right now. I couldn't get it elsewhere cheaper or second hand. On eBay or on bookshops the book costs £35-40 😬
Do you think if I opened the package read it and would return it by Monday Amazon would accept the return ? I know it's so bad but I'm so desperate

😂

TheQueef · 16/11/2018 14:27

Can you sell it after yourself?

Hairytangerine · 16/11/2018 14:28

If it holds its value you can just sell on. Amazon ate good at returns but no idea regarding books

Kannet · 16/11/2018 14:28

No I don't think they will

OooohhDeer · 16/11/2018 14:28

I don't know 🤷🏻‍♀️

If you couldn’t find it cheaper second hand why don’t you just sell it after and presumably make a profit?

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 16/11/2018 14:29

I guess that's why it comes wrapped!

delilahbucket · 16/11/2018 14:29

If it is sealed then probably not and rightly so. Customers pay for the cost of silly returns in higher prices for everything else. As an online retailer myself it annoys me that you think this is ok and it doesn't cost anyone anything.

Di11y · 16/11/2018 14:29

hmm, well technically you're supposed to be able to test any product you buy online...??

LewisMam · 16/11/2018 14:31

I don’t think they’ll accept the return if you’ve opened it and have clearly turned all the pages. If it’s a paperback it’ll be obvious you’ve read it. Perhaps less so with a hardback. Can you not borrow it from a library?

OooohhDeer · 16/11/2018 14:32

I have literally bought everything for my course before! If I wasn't in a tricky financial situation right now I would suck this up as well. Im

No, neither of the 5 libraries in 10 miles radius have it l.

DaysOfCurlySpencer · 16/11/2018 14:33

So you want to devalue the book by opening and reading it, which will affect the pristine look of the pages and make it second hand, and then return it?

People like you are the reason I hate selling online.

Buy a used one from somewhere else, or try a library. It is stealing. And before anyone says returning it is not theft, yes it is, because the original value has been removed therefore a part of the value has been stolen.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 16/11/2018 14:34

Sell it on eBay after you have read it.

DaysOfCurlySpencer · 16/11/2018 14:36

OK so no library, ours would order a book in.

Put a message on Freecycle or similar, ask in local groups, post on community boards, or heaven forbid, try a second hand bookshop or a used book seller online.

Just don't steal someone's profit. Other people sell things in order to pay bills you know. FFS.

itswinetime · 16/11/2018 14:36

No you have no valid reason for opening it and then needing to return it. That's why it's wrapped it's also why they put massive tags on dresses.

Sell it on after if that's expensive online you will get a decent amount back

teaandtoast · 16/11/2018 14:38

Have you tried Abebooks?

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 16/11/2018 14:42

Amazon are good with returns but they won't accept unsealed books. I suspect if you tried; you'd fail and you'd have to pay for the book - they're wising up to people reading and returning; it's been a bit of a theme this year!

Can any of the libraries order it in for you?

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 16/11/2018 14:43

Surely if it is a required study book your uni or college should have it in their library for student use?

puzzledlady · 16/11/2018 14:45

so you want to open the book, use it, then lie to amazon and say what - wrong book sent or something?? Im confused. what are you going to give the reason as?

LewisMam · 16/11/2018 14:46

I second the suggestion of asking a library to order the book. Your college or university library should be able to order a book as an inter-library-loan.

Deadringer · 16/11/2018 14:55

You shouldn't use it and return it, but you know that already. Use it and then re-sell, from what you have said you might even make a profit.

OooohhDeer · 16/11/2018 14:56

I'm doing an online course. Not a college or university. It's a home study diploma.
I'll speak to the local library stuff see what they can do. Will check out the website Abebooks as well thanks for the tip

Amazom have possibly the absolute best returns policy and customer service ive come across.

Id give it a shot. They might just take it.

My printer packed up 14 months after i bought it. It just wouldnt print in black and no amount of black ink or troubleshooting would fix it. I got in touch and they refunded me immediately and gave me up to a month to arrange a pick up for it.

VisitorsEntrance · 16/11/2018 15:04

If this is a book you need to read for your course surely you will need to keep it to refer back to or quote in essays etc.

Return it now unopened and then ask your local library.
