To ask if Amazon would accept this return?

I bought a book on Amazon for my studies. Fairly expensive, £26. My plan was to read it then return it but the book came wrapped in clear foil. I know it's naughty but I can't afford this book right now. I couldn't get it elsewhere cheaper or second hand. On eBay or on bookshops the book costs £35-40 😬
Do you think if I opened the package read it and would return it by Monday Amazon would accept the return ? I know it's so bad but I'm so desperate

Well surely if its £26 from Amazon and £35-40 on eBay (wtf, how stupid are eBay buyers?) then the obvious answer is to just sell it on eBay (or Amazon marketplace) after you've finished with it, and it won't cost you anything and you won't be abusing Amazon's return policy or risking them not refunding due to the seal being broken.

They did refund a £200 coffee machine we returned after a couple of weeks because we decided it was too fiddly to use and made crap coffee, but I think that was within their return policy/distance selling rights.

Surprisingly, the money was refunded within minutes of me dropping the parcel off at a shop - I could have posted a box of bricks back for all they knew at that time, although I'm sure they will have come back to me later on.

As others have said ABEBooks is a real money saver.

OooohhDeer · 16/11/2018 15:11

It's £50-75 on Abebooks 😳 It looks like I'm getting quite a deal on Amazon. I probably will just keep it and try to sell it once I am done with it

OP if your online course is with the Open University they have a scheme whereby you can register to use a local university library.

Missingstreetlife · 16/11/2018 15:13

Is there a fb page or website for your course you can resell it on?
University or academic bookshop?

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 16/11/2018 15:14

Id give it a shot. They might just take it.

The problem with that is that if they don't; OP will have to be able to afford the book and might lose her Amazon account. They're brutal if they think you've taken the piss.

Abra1de · 16/11/2018 15:15

The author who gets the royalties from that book is essentially being deprived of their earnings if you do this.

Cachailleacha · 16/11/2018 15:18

Have you looked for any earlier editions?

MeVoila · 16/11/2018 15:26

Which book is it?

SunnyTikka · 16/11/2018 15:30

Amazon DO accept returns on unsealed books.

QuietContraryMary · 16/11/2018 15:35

abebooks prices aren't real. you can just punt it back on Amazon as used.

maccaroni · 16/11/2018 15:37

You are a CF!! You wouldn't buy some underwear from M&S use it and return it for resale...what makes a book any different?! Retailers aren't just faceless, this sort of fraud costs them money and time (which also costs money) and it just pushes up the prices.

bringbackthestripes · 16/11/2018 15:37

So you want to return something ‘used’ and get all your money back? Shock

I once heard a colleague boast about buying something from Next, keeping the label on it then returning it after she had worn it. Disgusting, WTH should someone else pay full price for something that has been used?

I feel no different about the book situation TBH.

GreenJellyBaby · 16/11/2018 15:41

Think what you are suggesting is totally wrong- you want to effectively get something for free. Please look into other (legal) ways of getting this book like sharing with someone else

Fluffywuffyunicorn · 16/11/2018 15:50

Not everything on amazon is sold by amazon. If you do this you will no doubt be stealing off a small business. This is what pisses me off selling things online, some CF thinks it's okay to use devalue and return things just to get things for free. It is theft, no matter what your reasons.

Branleuse · 16/11/2018 15:55

I think if you got it sealed, and then returned it unsealed and blatantly read (and anyone can tell the difference between a book thats been read and one that hasnt) then you run a pretty big risk of them rejecting your return and you being made to pay the postage.
Come on, dont take the piss. Its not that clever or ingenious. If this sort of shit worked, dont you think everyone would be reading books and then returning them.

PattiStanger · 16/11/2018 16:03

If it's in such short supply you'll easily be able to sell it once you've finished with it.

Seems underhand to do what you're suggesting but if you want to know the answer why not ring and ask them?

Bombardier25966 · 16/11/2018 16:08

hmm, well technically you're supposed to be able to test any product you buy online...??

That's not correct. Distance selling regulations allow the consumer to examine an item the same way they would in a shop. So if a book was sold sealed in a store, your right of examination goes as far as looking at it sealed. Even if unsealed, the right to examine a book goes as far as checking it is what it says it is, and you can do that by looking at the cover, not reading the content!

PleaseJustSayNo · 16/11/2018 16:08

If its considerably more elsewhere (Inc eBay) I'd buy a few and sell em on. Financial problem solved along with you getting the book and completing your work

RCohle · 16/11/2018 16:12

There's a reason the book comes sealed - people like you.

Just because you're stealing from a corporation doesn't mean it's not theft.

Isleepinahedgefund · 16/11/2018 16:18

Also, your point about having paid for everything for your studies until now and somehow thinking this justifies your plan with the book is like saying you’re going to steal your next supermarket shop but it’s ok because you paid the previous 10 times.

Bluntness100 · 16/11/2018 16:22

Well you can call them and say you've got it, opened it and realised you need to return it is it ok? Then don't check when you've done it. My view is just return it, I don't think they will reject it because it's not in it's clear wrapping.

And amazon are very good with returns, I got some wine glasses delivered yesterday one was smashed, I called them and they issued a full refund and said to keep the five good ones.

Bluntness100 · 16/11/2018 16:24

and anyone can tell the difference between a book thats been read and one that hasnt

I don't think the folks at amazons warehouse check that carefully really. More is it the right book returned, good job done.

Noodledoodledoo · 16/11/2018 16:29

Book prices online are almost ficticious. My Dad had a book published, he had all copies of it as he was selling it via exhibitions etc. There was apparently a copy on amazon for £80 - think they just list all published books and price ridiculously to stop people buying!

We debated trying to order to see what would happen!

Drogosnextwife · 16/11/2018 16:31

Yup they probably will
