I'm debating a breast increase/lift but am torn between feeling shit about myself and thinking there is more to me than my appearance.

I forgot to say, my reasons were because I was very insecure about my size. My DH never bothered about my size, but I felt I couldn't wear some clothes and looked less somehow. Like a PP all my friends had C or D cups and I didn't even need a bra. I also got picked on a bit for it by boys and girls alike.

Settle my nerves*

OneStepSideways I haven’t been breast feeding for over 18 months now and they’re still empty.
I’ve booked a consultation with Mya next Saturday just to get an idea of what procedures I might need and how much it will cost. I might not go with them but they offered free consultations almost immediately so I thought why not.

the company i went with were mybreast for their lifetime aftercare guarantee. It doesnt look like the surgeon I had is still with them though as i think he has his own clinic now, but i did actually need a revision, because he had thought I could get away without an uplift and just implants, but when they still sagged, they gave me a free uplift. They handled it brilliantly and didnt try and get out of anything. I heard too many stories of people having to fight to get decent aftercare

ShastaBeast · 18/11/2018 16:49

I’ve been thinking about it recently but it’s seems silly. Mine is caused by losing weight - only a stone but they lost a lot of volume. I just want to get them back to what they were pre weight loss, around 32C/D. I had AAs as a teen and would’ve done it if I had the cash. When I did have the money I opted not to, never had trouble attracting boyfriends, possibly put off the wrong sort, like those who teased me at school. Pregnancy and breastfeeding gave me decent sized boobs, albeit with stretch marks.

The main reservations are

  1. I’m moderate risk for breast cancer so need mammograms more regularly. Will this be possible? Will it hurt more? Will it hide potential cancers?
  2. Will it feel uncomfortable having foreign bodies inside that area? Particularly sleeping as I already struggle to be comfortable for other reasons.
  3. Will they feel natural or be harder/heavier? And therefore be a turn off and make exercise harder.
  4. Will I feel like an utter vain twit? I look fine in a bikini, I just need a smaller sized cup.
Branleuse · 18/11/2018 17:02

1 - if you have over the muscle implants, then that can be a problem for mammograms. You might be advised to have under the muscle

2 - maybe. Someone up-thread says they cant sleep on their front anymore. I never slept on my front anyway. It doesnt affect me or feel like I have anything inside my body. It just feels normal for me, but i cant speak for everyone.

3 - They will usually be a lot firmer, particularly at first, and while they do soften up, they are usually firmer than natural breasts, but a lot of this depends on how much natural breast tissue you have to begin with. Whether this is a turn off or not depends on you and your partner I guess. It never bothered my partner. He likes them more than he thought he would.
They can affect excerising if you have under the muscle implants. It doesnt stop you doing exercise, but it can feel a bit weird if i do chest presses even years later, and if I was somehow naked and doing them (lol) then you can see that they are implants, but wearing a sports bra and a top, nobody has ever noticed. Some people who do serious exercise or body builders choose over the muscle implants as this is less intrusive, but with over the muscle, it doesnt always look as natural, and it can be a problem for mammograms. This might be something you want to look into.

  1. Who knows. Thats up to you. Getting cosmetic surgery is ultimately vanity. I dont personally feel like a vain twit, because nobody really knows about mine. I keep them under wraps most of the time.
MulderitsmeX · 18/11/2018 17:44
  1. Not sure but i think it takes longer as they have to scan from loads of angles
  2. I definitely wouldn't sleep on my front as I can feel the implants pressing my chest, massages are also not the most comfortable but apart from that I don't notice them. At first it felt weird but they settle into your body.
  3. Definitely firmer but in a good way and as they are more squeezable definitely a turn on Blush. I quite like squeezing them too!
Exercise no difference for me. Running is fine as they don't flop about.
  1. Not at all - it's nice to something for you.
ShastaBeast · 18/11/2018 17:46

Thanks for that. The idea of under muscle makes me feel a tad queasy. Although I’m not one for the chest press or push ups.

The other issue is weight gain - if I gain that stone back I won’t need it. I went from 23.5 to 21 BMI so it’s quite possible if I slip into bad habits for a few months. Perhaps maintaining this weight for a year and revisiting the idea.

Ideally I’d do far transfer but it’s higher risk and harder to find information/good surgeons.

BetterB00bs · 19/11/2018 08:35

Can I ask another question to those who’ve had implants?
Did you feel you had to tell people you had a boob job as it was obvious when they were settling down or were you able to keep it a secret?
I wouldn’t want anyone to know I had one for fear of judgement.

Branleuse · 19/11/2018 08:49

funnily enough, even though mine are considerably larger than they used to be, the only people that said anything were the people id told. I only had one friend look slightly suspiciously, and then it was never mentioned nor hinted at.
Even my own kids didnt notice.
People are often a lot less observant than you might think.

grasspigeons · 19/11/2018 08:50

I think you have to be very careful which surgeon you pick and what you pick to have done. I think be very clear on your mental state as well as I think some surgeons are not very ethical about encouraging women to get torpedo style implants that are too large for their frame, perhaps knowing that in a f ew years they will want smaller, more proportioned implants put in instead. I have had a few friends who have been pressured to go bigger than the size they wanted when they went in the room.

Aomame83 · 19/11/2018 08:59

At the time I told people. I just didn't want it to come out at some point and it to have been some kind of shameful secret. I only told them after the fact- even my parents. This was many years ago. Also, it was just before Christmas, so I was seeing lots of people during my recovery.

Now that I'm older... I'm not so sure. I'd maybe just go and get it done and tell no one. I am not as social anymore, so I don't think people would notice and I wouldn't feel it necessary.

embarassing · 20/11/2018 11:52

Are you taking someone along with you? I'm taking my best friend who's a GP who actually worked alongside the surgeon when she trained. Hoping she will ask all the questions!

Branleuse · 20/11/2018 15:04

please tell me your consultations are with actual surgeons.

Also research your surgeon. Most surgeons really will not try and pressurise you to go bigger. The only exception to this is if you are mildly to moderatly saggy and want to avoid an uplift, as sometimes a slightly larger implant will take up the slack and enable you to avoid an uplift, saving you both time in recovery, scarring and money.
I have however heard of surgeons that some people choose especially because of their tendency to go larger, when most surgeons will not do very large implants. Most surgeons will listen to you and want you to be happy with your choice, so if you say I want a big fake look, or I want a small natural look etc, they will try and give you what you want.

Frenchcroissant · 20/11/2018 16:05

My consultation it's with a surgeon, it costs £100 and I'm going with my husband.

combatbarbie · 20/11/2018 16:16

I had mine done after feeding a boob monster. I was a full C reduced to saggy empty A cups, best thing i ever done. I was in and out the same afternoon, wore a support bra for 6 weeks, had mine done on a Fri and was back at my deskjob on the Monday, no heavy lifting etc for 6 weeks but still managed day to day work/child routine. You can't see my scars unless you actually looked at them.

I had mine done in Harley Street (Not a stealth boast, it was closest to me) and the surgeon was great before and after. Def look around, get a feel for the clinic etc. Mine cost £2400 10yrs ago, I've had them checked and they don't need replacing anytime soon as they say 10yrs but they checked back on my records, what kind of implants used to determine risk of leaking etc....they were very open about not having them replaced just now as I was expecting a heavy sell on renewal.

If it's affecting your confidence and self esteem then no amount of exercise and bras is going to fix that.

NoraEphronsneck · 20/11/2018 16:20

To those who have had it done: have you lost sensation in your nipples?

A friend had it done and now has no feeling in her nipples. Maybe TMI but I think that's too high a price to pay.

Branleuse · 20/11/2018 19:06

ive had a full uplift and i have full sensation in my nipples, but youre right, it is something that can happen

DowhatIwant · 21/11/2018 15:51

Had 3 implant surgeries with uplift on the first.
I breastfed my first child till she was 3 years old and my second child till he was 18 months.
My first surgery I had issues as my implants were tear drop shaped and small at 270cc and so they subsequently rotated.
Second surgery was 600cc round and no issues, third surgery was as I wanted them larger and had 800cc.
All UK London private surgeons. Very happy with the results and no issues whatsoever.
It's your body, do as you wish.

Branleuse · 21/11/2018 23:15

Wow, did you have trouble finding one that would go that big?

madcatladyforever · 21/11/2018 23:20

Best thng I ever did, I had a mastopexy (breast uplift) My 34 D boobs were like spaniels ears after I had my son and I was miserable.
Leaves you with a big upside down T scar, nipples removed and sewn back on, looks pretty grisly immediately after surgery but settles down and the scars were a definite improvement on what I had before.
25 years later and they are still looking good and will do as long as you don't yoyo diet too much.

madcatladyforever · 21/11/2018 23:21

i have not lost any sensation in my nipples, it all came back within the year.

madcatladyforever · 21/11/2018 23:22

Also I did not want implants, the risk of hardening etc is too great so I just had the uplift.
