Eight days ago, the human equivalent of a British bulldog smashed her way out of my vagina. I had an episiotomy and then tore in a sort of star shape - think shredded labia, clitoral stitches, the lot. I lost a litre of blood and spent two hours in theatre repairing the damage, before going into some kind of weird shock that froze my jaw in place and necessitated heated blankets to bring me back round again.

Which brings me to today. I am still utterly broken. I can’t pee sitting down (can’t empty my bladder at all unless I stand) can’t walk far enough to leave the house, taking a bath is exhausting enough that it necessitates painkillers first and a sleep to recover after. I am bored and frustrated and my toddlers are turning feral. Apparently everything is healing nicely and I can tell that the swelling is reduced, but I am still utterly incapable of functioning at a normal level, even on paracetamol and ibuprofen. I can’t take codeine.

I’d love some insight as to how long it may take to feel ‘normal’ again. And I’ll gladly take sympathy and head-pats too.

I had a 3rd degree tear 6 weeks ago. I feel absolutley fine now. Honestly, i feel great and i think its mainly down to a product i ordered. After 2 hours in surgery i came out and ordered from amazon 'spritz for bitz'. Id looked at if before and been recommended it but thought i wouldnt need it but when the while 3rd degree thing happenedni ordered it on next day delivery from my hospital bed. Used it every time i went to the loo, sprayed it on the area and on each new pad and i felt like normal within 2 weeks... 3 at a push. Its expensive at 20quid a bittle but i personally would have paid anything to be able to sit again! And a bottle lasted for as long as i needed it with half left to pass on to my pregnant friend

I am only going to post my experience so you are aware of it and do something about it far quicker than I did if the same does happen to you.

I had a double episiotomy, was titched incorrectly and ended up having 2 corrective surgeries Fenton's procedures followed by plastic surgery to remove scar tissue. No sex for 3 years!!

I was cut when my DD was born, not too badly but needed a bit of repair. I'd sort of expected that, but I wasn't prepared for how much it affected me mentally.

I couldn't make myself it would ever heal as it doesn't dry out down there and it played on my mind a lot. My first thought every morning for the first two weeks was oh God, another day I'll have to try a poo without bursting my stitches Confused

It did get better after about three weeks though and the horrible tense feeling about everything in that area being ruined went away. You do get through it, but it totally sucks while you're living it. You'll be ok OP.

Sorry to hear that your suffering can literally feel your pain. I had really similar wounds. 12 weeks on I’m functional but not normal. This was my amazon order from my hospital bed and I really think these helped.

Bless you. DS1 tried to “join the dots” for want of a better expression. Third degree year plus other damage. My second stage of labor was four contractions. Lots and lots of pelvic floor excerises later and I am fine. It took time and dedication.

EugenesAxe · 15/11/2018 22:05

I feel very sorry for you! I only had a meagre 2/3 degree tear - but for what it’s worth, I found that gentle but sustained pelvic floor clenching really helped heal the area by increasing blood flow to it. Get better soon x

I had a foul time with my first child. Tear, forceps, infection in stitches, a weird benign cyst/lump half way up my vagina.

I can't remember how soon it healed but certainly a year or so later I could barely remember it. I remember I had a new partner and everything was fine ...
