To think they should have lasted longer?

I know this is petty in the grand scheme of things but still annoying! i use to buy my son supermarket shoes and they kept falling apart after a few months, my sister recommended some nike trainers which were apparently hard wearing ! they werent cheap but thought it would be worth it rather than to keep paying out. Well he has worn them since september and today i noticed a huge hole at the back on the inside! so nothing he could have done really. and all the plastic is spiking into the back of his foot! ( he was complaining of them hurting hence why i checked) hes only worn them since sept! aibu to expect expensive trainers to last abit longer than 2.5 months?! Now I have to buy yet another pair of shoes.

Geox get my slow growing, active children through a school year.

DS1 ruined his Clarks when in yR. The overlap on the velcro was inadequate for a G fitting with little overlap and got gunked with fluff from the book corner, so the velcro regularly undid and he'd mash the back of the shoe when trying to put them back on umpteen times a day. On other pairs, the stitching regularly came apart long before they were outgrown.

Generally I've been pleased with M&S although there was the pair of trainers that were returned within 48 hours because he'd worn right through the upper through to the plastic toe cap underneath during one day's wear at holiday club. The assistant didn't believe that it was the pair on the reciept until I pointed out how clean the rest of the uppers and soles were.

Decathlon do great kids' trainers. I accidentally bought DS2's too big when I muddled British / European size conversions. He's had over 18m use out of them (regular park run attendee)

ReflectionsofParadise · 15/11/2018 12:26

He's 6. What fitted him 3 months ago wont fit him the same now. For the price why didn't you just get him some Clarks? You can at least sell them after he outgrows them too.

OneStepMoreFun · 15/11/2018 12:43

They really should last longer than that. DS2 always buys Nikes/ So,e of his ar eseveral years old. He has one pair he wears all the time. They're a year old and still look new. I'd return them.

Ironytheoppositeofwrinkly · 15/11/2018 12:50

mummyoflittledragon 20 pound every five weeks is £4 a week. £4 a week for your child to have shoes of a reasonable quality on their feet. Fairly cheap I'd say, each to their own though.

CandyCreeper · 15/11/2018 13:12

I got them from JD and ordered online so have proof. going by the reviews lots of people buy them as school shoes?? I cant always get out to the shops it can be quite difficult hence buying online 😭

I agree with PolPot and others. My boys wear away the inside of the back by pulling their trainers on and off without undoing the laces.

Mummyoflittledragon · 15/11/2018 13:30

Ironyofthewrinkle
In isolation, sure. But most kids have a few pairs of shoes. I’m coming from that angle. If a child is just wearing shoes to school they should last a darn sight longer than a few weeks.

Jimjamjong · 15/11/2018 13:33

YANBU, Decathlon are good and not too pricy, you should be able to order online too (I have a 2 years old and a 5 years old, same problem before switching to Decathlon, although Sainsbury's aren't too bad, Clarks are good but a bit hard IMO).

Eliza9917 · 15/11/2018 13:37

If they still fit him, get some sticky back felt or fleece or something, or black heel grips and patch them up. No one will see it and it saves a perfectly good pair of shoes from going to landfill and you some money.

usertall · 15/11/2018 13:38

Clark's shoes are brilliant, they always last my kids the year and are professionally fitted.

BlueUggs · 15/11/2018 13:56

I was, and still am, hard on shoes. When I was at school, I had to wear lace up shoes from start rite to have any chance of them lasting a while....
I buy my son start rite or Clark's. He's kept them for a whole school year and although worn, would have carried on if they weren't too small.

Steelesauce · 15/11/2018 14:06

Sainsburys schoool shoes, the ones with the thick sole that goes over the toe, I think they're £22. All the boys in my sons year 2 class are wearing them after they went through reception trashing expensive Clarke etc. One of us discovered them in year 1 and now we're all converted. They last until they outgrow.

Housecoatdiva · 15/11/2018 14:16

I disagree with some posters on here. Of course shoes should last longer than 5-6 weeks! I've had shoes in the past no matter where I've bought them from that I've returned if they start to fall apart within a few months. I've always been able to get a new pair even without a receipt because the shop knows that just isn't acceptable.
My Ds feet grow very slowly. I've had a pair of shoes last a year before now ( Clarks) and his current Geox are doing brilliantly.

CandyCreeper · 15/11/2018 14:52

^^ agree i didnt think it sounded right trainers only lasting 5/6 weeks Confused I know adults who have had trainers for years (maybe not wearing every day) but 5/6 weeks is ridiculous.

ive taken another look at the hole and it really is huge, must have been there a while and maybe its only just started to hurt, the plastic is really sharp, think its worth taking them back, can only try.

AnotherOriginalUsername · 15/11/2018 14:59

I get what sounds like this with my Nike trainers, mainly because I don't undo the laces to put them on so the back invariably gets pushed down when I put them on (I'm way too pregnant right now to be able to tie my own laces!)

AnotherOriginalUsername · 15/11/2018 15:12

It's just starting in my current pair (excuse the dog hair - I wander around in socks at home and 4 dogs mean no matter how much you vacuum, there's always hair!)

To think they should have lasted longer?
nornironrock · 15/11/2018 15:17

Despite most people buying trainers for fashion, the reality is that most of them are, or were, originally designed with a particular sporting use in mind. The construction, and the way they protect/support feet, are therefore optimised for that particular sport.

If a pair of running shoes are being used as school shoes for a child, they will fall apart very quickly. Especially if then being used to play football in....

We buy trainers for the kids for school and go for retro tennis shoes in leather (such as Adidas Stan Smith or similar) as they tend to be that little bit harder wearing. If one of them is desperate for lighter shoes, we will only do so if we are happy in the knowledge that a couple of months will be all we get from them.

NoCryingInEngineering · 15/11/2018 15:17

We bought DS a pair of Geox for starting school. 8 weeks later the outer layer is peeling off on the top of his right shoe. He doesn't scoot to school and is left footed, so I've no idea how he's managed this but I'm unimpressed

Funnyface1 · 15/11/2018 16:12

I still buy from Clarks for ds who is now 8. His feet don't grow too fast so we usually get a long time out of them and they last really well.

Dd is 2 and her feet are growing really fast so she has an assortment of Clarks and supermarket shoes. The supermarket ones are doing well too.

CandyCreeper · 15/11/2018 18:26

NoCryingInEngineering did you try taking them back??

dont most young teens wear trainers everyday? my nephew only ever wheres trainers and my sister said theyve always last a year (till outgrown)

OP posts:
NoCryingInEngineering · 15/11/2018 20:33

We haven't, but might try this weekend

CandyCreeper · 03/12/2018 11:01

UPDATE: if anyone is still interested I was asked to send the trainers back to JD which i did, who have just sent them back to me refusing to refund or replace because theyve been worn! surely trainers only worn for 2 months shouldnt have a massive hole in them after 2 months especially nike, is it worth trying to take it further (how??) or just give up, I think for the cost its shocking tbh. Has anyone actually got anywhere returning trainers like this?
