To think they should have lasted longer?

I know this is petty in the grand scheme of things but still annoying! i use to buy my son supermarket shoes and they kept falling apart after a few months, my sister recommended some nike trainers which were apparently hard wearing ! they werent cheap but thought it would be worth it rather than to keep paying out. Well he has worn them since september and today i noticed a huge hole at the back on the inside! so nothing he could have done really. and all the plastic is spiking into the back of his foot! ( he was complaining of them hurting hence why i checked) hes only worn them since sept! aibu to expect expensive trainers to last abit longer than 2.5 months?! Now I have to buy yet another pair of shoes.

watch how he's putting them on. he could be putting them on in a way to stress the fabric. any damage my son has done to trainers was the way he was putting them on or walking in them without putting them on properly i.e. squashing the backs.

Ariela · 15/11/2018 10:19

M&S school shoes seem to last well.

Oliversmumsarmy · 15/11/2018 10:20

I have bought Clarkes once for the September term.

They fell apart before the end of November.

DD has vv narrow feet. AA width, Primark fitted perfectly and lasted all year and were around a fiver

ittakes2 · 15/11/2018 10:20

sorry can I add - also watch how he's taking them off - my son uses his other foot to push on the back of the trainer squish it down rather than use his hands.

Mummyoflittledragon · 15/11/2018 10:30

10-20 pounds, whic evry 5 or 6 weeks is hardly unaffordable.

Crikey personally I can afford this but I would not want to be spending £20 every 5/6 weeks. Many cannot afford this.

You could try complaining op.

jcsp · 15/11/2018 10:32

Pull/break/cut the spiky bit of plastic out.

Mine go like that after time and a few machine washes.

Once out they’ll be comfortable again.

PrivateDoor · 15/11/2018 10:40

Do people really replace shoes every term? Shock

I have never ever had to do this, we only buy school shoes in August and they always last the year!

I agree with pp op, you need to make sure he is opening the fastening to put them on and take them off, that is what is causing this damage!

CandyCreeper · 15/11/2018 10:45

I think i will do that jcsp till i can afford a new pair, im reluctant to buy the supermarket ones as ive picked him up and noticed the whole front hanging off like i said, that wasnt in the morning before school and children have teased him about it. so i will wait to get a better pair and try to repair them in the mean time. im tempting to complain due to the price they were but i dont think i would get anywhere like i said 5 star reviews!

My parents always use to buy shoes from clarks for my brother and me. They really did last the whole last year and I've found the same thing with my own- it's pays to spend a bit more on something that will be worn everyday and I'm the same with coats.

Sleephead1 · 15/11/2018 10:47

we use Clarks and they have always lasted really well.could you take him to get meassures and fitted then at least you know the size is Correct. We payed 40 for my son's school shoes and they are still in very good condition from September.

cantfindname · 15/11/2018 10:52

If he isn't undoing the laces properly then the plastic shaper at the back distorts and quickly cuts through the lining of the trainer.

I know because I have done it myself, more than once

saj90 · 15/11/2018 11:02

Definitely take them back. Nike should last longer. I've taken trainers back several times - once a whole year after buying!

Hezz · 15/11/2018 11:05

Take them back, that's not normal for Nike in my experience.

IDontWantToBuildASnowman · 15/11/2018 11:07

I think unfortunately you may just have a child who is very hard on shoes. This was my DD when she was younger, I could barely get a term from even the most expensive Startrite shoes. Friends of hers were wearing shoes that had been passed down from older sisters, and I just didn't understand how you could ever achieve that. We are now in Y5 and she thankfully grows out of shoes before they wear out.

bobstersmum · 15/11/2018 11:14

I have found asda school shoes brilliant, they are cheap enough to replace every term but I have not had to, and I have my second ds wearing some that my first outgrew, they must be well over a year old! Average 13-16 pounds. I haven't tried their other footwear though. Plus, doesn't asda do a 100 day guarantee on all school wear?
We have Nike trainers (airmax) that have been worn, battered, washed and they are also great, maybe you got a faulty pair?

fifig87 · 15/11/2018 11:19

Both of mine are in Sketchers at the moment, wearing very well. Usually use geox and they last well too(often can be passed over as spare mucky shoes). I keep an eye out for sales and discounts to save a few euro.
I bought my ds a pair of Nike last year and one of the loops for the laces had broke within a week.

CandyCreeper · 15/11/2018 11:20

really? i can take them back?? they are air force 1s which from my understanding are meant to be very good.

we got the supermarket ones from tesco, didnt know that about asda that sounds good.

I think some children are harder than others on clothes and shoes. Annoyingly it's my DS1 who destroys everything. DS2 grows out of a lot of his clothes and they're still pristine.

We've had good luck with M&S school shoes - comfy like trainers and fairly hard-wearing.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 15/11/2018 11:25

I'd get him fitted professionally. Then if there are still fit issues; you can take the shoes back - but it doesn't sound like they fit right. It's not just space at the front that matters; the width is important too. These sound too narrow for him.

Ghanagirl · 15/11/2018 11:28

But OP trainers are for sports or fashion they are not designed as everyday school shoes.
Go to Clark’s, John Lewis etc and get him properly fitted with Geox, startrite etc they should last until end of school year unless he has huge growth spurt which is more common when they hit double digits

Oliversmumsarmy · 15/11/2018 11:31

I think sometimes despite a company having a good reputation they can try out different manufacturers and sometimes they aren't as good.
Hence why some people have a problem with a product sometimes.

Bought dp some non iron shirts from a place we always bought from.

They came out like rags.

Took them back and they said to keep them and I was offered money back or shirts that were more expensive as a direct swap as they had so many complaints.

saj90 · 15/11/2018 11:49

Where did you buy them from? There's no harm in trying!!

beachysandy81 · 15/11/2018 11:54

If you have the receipt return them. Clarks always replaced my kids shoes if they got broken so the shop you bought them from might.

RiverTam · 15/11/2018 12:02

if you have the receipt I would totally return them, no shoe should be unwearable after 2 months.

Selfsestructactive · 15/11/2018 12:10

The only ones that last for ds are Astro trainers, he's v hard on shoes but these last great
