I really usually enjoy the JL Christmas ad but this year it’s bloody awful!

I like it, but I like Elton and I LOVE that song. I like the sentiment but it's just not Christmas!

ShalomJackie · 15/11/2018 10:52

Maybe because David Attenborough isn't promoting a new tour!

Bluelady · 15/11/2018 10:54

I love it. Moist eyes here. The best part of getting old is letting go of a lifetime of cynicism.

ClemClemFandango Spot on Star

GreenJellyBaby · 15/11/2018 10:56

@KarlsComing2Town absolutely agree. Some posters are missing the point of the ad

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 15/11/2018 10:59

I'm not a massive Elton John's fan so I don't know the actual timeline but I'm pretty sure some of the clips are in the wrong order, shouldn't his voice get higher and stronger as he gets younger, instead of going up and down throughout?

BertramKibbler · 15/11/2018 11:01

I love it, I just hope EJ really did properly reconcile with his mum before she died

Avegemitesandwich · 15/11/2018 11:02

I wonder if there will be a sudden rise in the sale of pianos as mums imagine their little boys as the next Elton John!

I love the song but I don't really get the ad? And it just seems like an Elton John advert?

Aeroflotgirl · 15/11/2018 11:05

Yabvu it is lovely, I love tge message behind it. Different to all there usual out there.

OutragedEtc · 15/11/2018 11:10

It’s ok. It’s not my favourite EJ song so I don’t love it.

I wonder if it’s the same EJ impersonator that his mum hired for her birthday party Grin

beefchowmein · 15/11/2018 11:11

It’s been quite well publicised that Elton John didn’t speak to his mum for about a decade and they had a difficult relationship which kinds of clouds the concept a bit.

beefchowmein · 15/11/2018 11:13

My fave JL Xmas ad is the one with the little boy who can’t wait for Christmas so he can give his mum and dad the present

MrsReacher1 · 15/11/2018 11:13

Loved it. It tells a story. A gift is a gift... that is the point.

PipGoesPop · 15/11/2018 11:17

I liked it. It had heart unlike some of the JL ads of late - that trampoline one for example.

Tippexy · 15/11/2018 11:19

@Vagndidit Yes you can, actually.

GinIsIn · 15/11/2018 11:19

I thought it was crap. 1. He’s a famously unpleasant man. 2. Like he shops at JL...? Hmm 3. They already used ‘Your Song’ for the ad a few years ago. 4. £5 million?! And nobody seems able to clarify how much was donated to charity. Funny, that.

ginghamstarfish · 15/11/2018 11:27

I wonder who paid who for this? The end bit with a little boy opening a piano would be fine on its own, don't need to see creepy Elton lookalikes etc and a fat spoilt diva with bad hair ... what the hell has that got to do with Christmas?

Avegemitesandwich · 15/11/2018 11:28

My fave JL Xmas ad is the one with the little boy who can’t wait for Christmas so he can give his mum and dad the present

It's far and away the best one!

Bluelady · 15/11/2018 11:29

Well obviously JL paid for because it's their ad.

MinorRSole · 15/11/2018 11:31

I don't think posters are missing the point at all but I think the advert is massively out of touch. Music tuition has taken a massive hit lately, there's no funding and councils are increasing the prices so that those on low incomes simply can't afford it.
If JL & EJ feel so passionately perhaps the 5 million would have been better spent providing musical instruments for the poorest communities - imagine how beautiful the advert could have been for that!

Grilledaubergines · 15/11/2018 11:33

JL do sell a selection of pianos at the moment.

Loved the ad. Makes a change from the school nativity styled ads in abundance over the last few years.

It’s the Boots one I really dislike.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 15/11/2018 11:39

Oh no, I’ve just read that the premise of this advert isn’t even true! He didn’t get a piano for Christmas from his grandma, he just learnt to play on her piano when she lived next door to him. I was sort of liking the message, I feel robbed Grin

Dumela · 15/11/2018 11:39

It does relate to everyone out there. This is more for Elton about Elton. Zachary and Elijah will see Papa's xmas story. That's it.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 15/11/2018 11:40

Makes a change from the school nativity styled ads in abundance over the last few years.

They've already done that this year, the school play set to Bohemian Rhapsody.

Sparklingbrook · 15/11/2018 11:40

Is it possible a proportion of money went to the Elton John Foundation?

I agree that the Boots advert is terrible.
