Even this is allowed now?

Even when it's not a distressing discussion, no privacy concerns, and no trolling?

OP posts:
BumbleBeee69 · 14/11/2018 13:58

I think it's a fair request.

cheesefield · 14/11/2018 14:01

Why?

OP posts:
PattiStanger · 14/11/2018 14:29

The “rules” on thread deletions and placement are stupid now imo. There's no consistency in what gets deleted and threads are posted all over the place.

Why not do away with topics and let OPs delete their own threads and be done with it.

The hide topic function is totally redundant if threads are posted anywhere (which usually means AIBU)

blackchina · 14/11/2018 14:38

It is annoying, as there seems to be different rules on different days! Sorry MN, no offence.

Some people put threads on, and wish they hadn't as they found it a little bit identifying, (or people are being horrible and upsetting them,) and MN refuse to remove it. They say 'lots of people have contributed,' and/or 'it may be useful to someone else...'

Yet another one will be on for 3 hours, and then it's ZAPPED, With the reason; 'the OP had privacy concerns' when there was nothing in the thread that would have cause privacy concerns! Hmm

I think everyone should have the option of removing their thread within an hour of posting it (if they regret it or are being attacked really badly or are getting upset.) But they should only be able to delete say, a maximum of 3 a month (so people can't keep posting dozens a week and deleting them IYSWIM.)

But it shouldn't be that some people get their threads removed, (often for very little or nothing!) and MN refuse to delete others.

Caprisunorange · 14/11/2018 14:39

I think this is really frustrating. Why waste your precious time engaging when it’s just going to disappear?

Doyoumind · 14/11/2018 14:48

I was just coming on to complain about that deletion and found your thread OP.

I know hardly a day goes by when there aren't complaints about deletions and I never join in but this one has annoyed me. It's clear the OP got no agreement with her stance because she was clearly BU and then asked for it to be deleted. That should not be the way it works.

Wondermoomin · 14/11/2018 14:49

YANBU, the rules are EXTREMELY bendy and it's frustrating. I requested a thread to be deleted as it had got nasty, and I was denied my request. MNHQ told me just to change my name Hmm

Doyoumind · 14/11/2018 14:53

Surely the whole point is to get your question answered? If that's the basis for deletions there won't be a site left soon. Clearly that's not what's going to happen. I don't know why we have to allow for someone posting anonymously to have the right to be annoyed or embarrassed and get threads deleted. Might as well add a delete post function too.

cheesefield · 14/11/2018 14:55

Tbh there have been a few deletions that I have absolutely agreed with - where a poster has been completely destroyed over something awful, or in a very delicate stressful situation, or the papers have picked it up and it could cause them issues in RL if they are identified in the DM or somewhere.

But this one? I don't get it. It's juat another OP chucking their toys out because they don't like the responses, none of which were personal, malicious, troll hunting or potentially identifying.

OP posts:
Houseonahill · 14/11/2018 14:56

Why shouldn't it work like that? So people can keep piling on to have another kick? Why should people not be allowed to regret something and have it removed? Even if the only problem is people don't like being told they are being unreasonable. Mumsnet is supposed to be supportive and keeping things up that someone wants removed for whatever reason doesn't seem very supportive to me.

blackchina · 14/11/2018 14:57

Which thread was it?

cheesefield · 14/11/2018 14:59

Nobody was giving her a kicking at all, it was a good discussion with a lot of good points. The OP just didn't like the good and sensible points people were making apparently.

OP posts:
BertramKibbler · 14/11/2018 14:59

Why do people care about threads being deleted?

cheesefield · 14/11/2018 14:59

It was the one where the OP was complaining about being charged cancellation fees by the gym for not turning up to classes they have booked in for.

OP posts:
Doyoumind · 14/11/2018 15:08

I can see why certain threads need to be deleted but there was no good reason in this instance. People need to take responsibility for what they write and think before they post. If you ask AIBU then you have to be prepared to hear you are not. I don't want this to become a TAAT but that one was a standard thread where no one agreed with the OP but they weren't being rude towards the OP so she had no reason to be offended.

Valanice1989 · 14/11/2018 15:11

I don't think I've ever seen a thread get deleted because "the OP thinks it might be identifying" when most people were on the side of the OP.

BertramKibbler · 14/11/2018 15:13

Mine was once Vala

sirfredfredgeorge · 14/11/2018 15:22

Why do people care about threads being deleted?

Because the value of a discussion forum is that others can read the discussion - if people want individual help, a discussion forum is not the place for it.

Waspnest · 14/11/2018 15:27

I was going to complain about that deletion as well - really pissed off about it. No-one was rude at all, they just didn't agree with the OP and didn't think it was a feminist issue. Makes you wonder whether it's worth posting on some threads really.

BertramKibbler · 14/11/2018 15:28

Ok sirtwins but if the discussion is being aimed specifically at one person and is causing distress to that one person surely they shouldn’t be subjected to it

blackchina · 14/11/2018 15:28

Thanks @cheesefield I didn't notice that one to be honest.

ClosdesMouches · 14/11/2018 15:41

Unless TG have recently been updated, that is a ridiculous reason to delete.
So much inconsistency.
HQ please give us clear posting guidelines.

IAmBeyonceAlways · 14/11/2018 15:42

It may have been answered for THEM but what about others who come on here with a similar concern, we have to answer the same thing all over again as they may have searched for a similar thread but wont find it as it has been deleted.

BertramKibbler · 14/11/2018 15:48

Lol, no one searches for similar threads!

PinkAvocado · 14/11/2018 15:51

A lot of MN discussions come up on Google searches. It is helpful.
