AIBU to be cross with Mothercare?

I bought a 0+ Joie Gemm carseat online from Mothercare ahead of DD's birth in August. Well, at 15weeks old she doesn't bloody fit in it!

She's only 6kg, but the straps are too tight to close round her because she's very long. Contacted Joie to ask if it's safe to remove infant insert before the proscribed 10kg if she just doesn't bloody fit, they say no... Sometimes babies just don't fit, try a different seat.

Contacted Mothercare to ask for a refund and they've said sure... If I take it in to store. They've just closed my nearest store though, so the next nearest store is over an hours drive away... And I don't have a sodding car seat!

AIBU to say they ought to sort this out without putting all the hassle and expense on to me? I'm a new mum, and it's their megacorp that sold me a crappy product!

It is fit for purpose. It just doesn’t fit your kid.

How do you expect them to remedy this? It’s not their fault you live an hour away from a branch.

PatchworkElmer · 14/11/2018 14:05

Another one wonder if the insert is for pounds, not kg. DS is 2 and only just 14kg!

Or is it that the seat is for up to 10kg maybe?

R3b3kah · 14/11/2018 14:06

Why do they need to do you a favour?
They are already doing a favour by refunding way after refund deadline

IDontGiveAFuckWhatArleneWears · 14/11/2018 14:07

I actually think that's pretty decent of Mothercare.

Bluebelltulip · 14/11/2018 14:08

Apologies if you have already done this but have you moved the straps up to the next whole?

CatsCatsCats11 · 14/11/2018 14:08

Pretty sure you just take the insert out at that age.

RoboticMary · 14/11/2018 14:11

In answer to your question, yes OP, you’re being totally unreasonable. You really are.

Sjjr23 · 14/11/2018 14:14

YABU - my son is 9 months old but has outgrown his 9-12 clothes......am I owed a refund because he was in them 2 minutes ?

AvoidingDM · 14/11/2018 14:14

Curiousity got the better of me check the instructions it has insert A and B one must be used to 10kg.

Is one less bulky than the other?

IDontGiveAFuckWhatArleneWears · 14/11/2018 14:15

I'm going to buy a very expensive pair of size 6 jeans and demand a refund because I'm a size 16.

famishedpotato · 14/11/2018 14:17

It's got a years guarantee.

Another one wonder if the insert is for pounds, not kg. DS is 2 and only just 14kg!
The insert is definitely up to 10kg - I checked with Joie.

For context, my daughter is 75th percentile for weight, and 91st for height. So large but not enormous! It's actually entirely predictable that a fairly significant number of babies wouldn't fit in to this car seat.

TheFantasticFixit · 14/11/2018 14:18

I’ll put all my money on this being the OPs first child....

Glumglowworm · 14/11/2018 14:18

YABU

they’ve done nothing wrong. The product is perfectly fit for purpose. It just happens that your DD doesn’t fit it. That’s like me saying a pair of size 8 jeans aren’t fit for purpose because they don’t fit me because I’m considerably larger than a size 8!

They’re being very good giving you a refund for a product that isn’t faulty and that you’ve been using for 3 months.

Lose the entitled attitude!

PattiStanger · 14/11/2018 14:19

Of course it's fit for purpose, the purpose is being a safe car seat not a safe car seat for your baby.

Unless it specially guaranteed that it would fit all babies I think you're doing well to get a refund for an item that they aren't going to be able to sell to anyone else.

Very unusual to get so many posters agreeing which might suggest your expectations are wrong.

IDontGiveAFuckWhatArleneWears · 14/11/2018 14:19

From that link - It just says you have to use one of the inserts if the baby is under 10kg? Use A or B. So you can take one out and use it.

Also have you moved up the straps at the shoulder at the crotch?

famishedpotato · 14/11/2018 14:20

@avoidingDM The older models had two inserts, the one I bought only has one. I did ask Joie about this, and whether it would be safe to buy/use the smaller one but they said that it's "not recommended".

Those saying it's like buying jeans that don't fit - I assume you all gave birth inside a Mothercare so you could try on a car seat before buying? Hmm

OP. You have posted on AIBU?,

Everyone (bar 1) has said you are being unreasonable. Why are you still arguing? Why did you bother posting on here?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 14/11/2018 14:21

It's not their fault your DD is very long fgs!
Be thankful they're willing to refund.

IDontGiveAFuckWhatArleneWears · 14/11/2018 14:22

The link in the instructions says

Insert is for infant's
protection. Infant weighing
under 10kg must use the
insert A or B.

So A or B. Insert A is the newborn one looking at the parts list on the first page.

You can use the other insert, the B one, which is just like a head hugger and hasn't got the extension down the back of the seat.

Aspergallus · 14/11/2018 14:22

If you have a kid far off average things get awkward.

My very tall 4 year old outgrew his seat before he was mature enough to use a high back booster with seat belt. We had a long search for a big seat with a 5 point harness.

You basically got a chair which was more expensive per use for you versus the average person. Someone with a small baby will get better value than average.

I agree with the others -a refund is generous.

PattiStanger · 14/11/2018 14:22

Of course it's predictable that not all babies are the same size, surely that's why you have to accept that it would be next to impossible to design a universal car seat and you've been given a free pass to find one which fits.

It's a good result, why are you looking on the negative side?

bellanotte22 · 14/11/2018 14:22

You're being entirely U.

IDontGiveAFuckWhatArleneWears · 14/11/2018 14:23

You are being completely silly. If she doesn't fit with the bigger insert, because she's long/big/too tall then take the insert out and use it with the smaller insert - and if you haven't got that exact insert, go online and buy a replacement B insert. It's a headhugger it's not exactly going to be hard to find online - try ebay or amazon.

famishedpotato · 14/11/2018 14:23

Apparently AIBU to expect them to let me post back a shitty carseat that I bought online. Fair enough - does anyone have a recommendation for a car seat for a mediumly tall baby? Priority is facing backwards and doesn't need Isofix.

OP posts:
Unihorn · 14/11/2018 14:23

I had an Aton Q car seat (supposed to last until 13kg) that my 25th centile baby outgrew at about 4 months (she's only 10kg at 2!) It didn't cross my mind to request a refund. I just bought a group 0/1/2 because I knew it would last a lot longer. You could've bought something like the Joie Stages if you wanted to make sure it lasted. I don't see how you can blame Mothercare. They didn't know your baby would outgrow it quickly either!
