To send DD into school in a superhero costume on Friday

It's children in need, so it's mufti day. Except it's not just mufti day, they have to wear something spotty. Well DD doesn't have any spotty clothes, neither does her brother. So I have a choice of going out and buying something she will never wear again, dragging the toddler and baby to the terrifying craft shop, full of delicate, breakable things to buy pom-poms that I can spend hours sewing to her clothes.

Or option 3. I send her in, in her miraculous

I remember getting an old white t.shirt for my DS and drawing round a 2 pence coin, all over it.

That is what we usually did

bobstersmum · 14/11/2018 10:17

I once drew spots on a white t shirt for ds with ordinary felt tip pens. Some spots on cheeks with face paint. That was it, he looked good!

Smurfie12 · 14/11/2018 10:19

Hi I used one of my sons school t-shirts that was yellow and then used bingo dabber pens in the colours of the pudsey spots all over his t-shirt, it looked amazing and cost around 2 quid for the pens. I had quite a few teachers asking me how I had done this as it looked really good.

ReverseTheFerret · 14/11/2018 10:21

I sent mine in in a dalmatian waistcoat for spotty day once - was spotty, was in the dressing up box and they thought it was a fantastic idea.

Mine needed new onesies anyway the other week (they chuck them on to come home after dancing and things when it's too much of a faff getting them dressed again but too cold to just run out to the car in a leotard) so I bought the Pudsey ones because they liked the look of them - only reason they're wearing "proper" CIN stuff this Friday.

We have a lot of kids with sensory needs or who just don't like dressing up who will just go in in whatever own clothes they feel like going in in though and no one bats an eyelid.

MERLYPUSSEDOFF · 14/11/2018 10:24

If it's going to be faff with the fancy dress costume go for an easier option. Does she have spotty socks? Even ankle socks can be worn over tights. What about a headband or bandanna?
I have twins and I wont buy Pudsey merchandise as it's overpriced and very little actually goes to the charity. Last year I wrote on plain white PE t-shirts (£2.50 for 2 in Asda) ''Keep calm and stay spotty' with a picture of Pudsey, in permanent marker, where the crown normally goes. They wore the tops as pj tops after.

GreenBasket · 14/11/2018 10:28

I've Googled it OP and is it just a red onesie type number with spots on it? Fine if so surely - just don't wear the mask and then it's not really a costume is it?!

MERLYPUSSEDOFF · 14/11/2018 10:31

They aren't allowed to wear onesies at our school in case of pee accidents or dipping the top half in the loo when they sit down.

PasswordRejection · 14/11/2018 10:36

If they've specifically said no fancy dress costumes why would you send her in fancy dress? Just send her in normal clothes. She's not going to get turned away for not having spots.

Our school does spots or stripes for CIN to make it a bit more flexible. Maybe suggest that to the school for future years?

CuppaSarah · 14/11/2018 10:39

GreenBasket She definetly isn't waring the mask as she dissected it over the summer, she's 100% not bringing her 'magic' yoyo in either. It's a onesie but made of that nasty 'dressing up clothes' fabric, with velcro down the back.

MERLY this and PE is my worry. She can get it off no problem, but takes a while putting it back on. I like her teachers, definetly don't want to cause them anymore grief than mufti day normally brings.

I'm going to get the dot stickers tomorrow, dot up some clothes that evening with her and see what she wants to do on the morning. I'll bring the left over stickers in for anyone who forgot or couldn't find anything spotty either. Last year I was the one who forgot, but fortunately had spotty clothes in the car by some magic coincidence.

PasswordRejection I wouldn't normally, but CIN is (in my mind at least) a little more open for wacky and unusual clothes.

Surely spots on a plain tshirt is a waste unless it would get worn again?

Socks/tights?

Loyaultemelie · 14/11/2018 10:53

Oh God I bet our school will do this. They do a Wednesday note so that will be 2 days notice.

Ngaio2 · 14/11/2018 10:56

As this appears to be an annual event then I suggest those parents with children affected should look out for appropriate stuff that can be used 2 or 3 years. Maybe tops that are beginning to look too scruffy for every day wear could be utilised? I love charity shopping with friends and you get to know what the individual shops are best for, which have the best prices etc. If you can’t find a garment then make a cloak — best for ease of use to use Velcro for fastening.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 14/11/2018 11:36

DD is in Y5 and school have a 'spotty' day on Friday. She's wearing her own clothes and Pudsey ears! However, I like the idea above to colour some white sticky dots and stick them on a t-shirt. I've ordered some on Amazon Prime, so we'll see if she'll wear some.

DS is in nursery and he's wearing his CIN PJ top. I thought it was a better buy as he can wear the PJs all year for my £8 rather than a £5 t-shirt for just a day (or two days if it fits next year!).

TeenTimesTwo · 14/11/2018 11:42

I think the Miraculous costume will be fine (great show) as it is spotty.

What they don't want is lots of Superman, or Disney Princess costumes. They probably (definitely) didn't even think about there being a spotty superhero.

PrivateDoor · 14/11/2018 11:48

I personally wouldn't since they specifically requested no dressing up outfits - I don't know why you would think it ok when they already said no to it? If she doesn't want the stickers then just send her in normal clothes, the school were not trying to cause any stress, they are just trying to raise some money for charity! There is no need at all for angst.

steppemum · 14/11/2018 11:53

CIN used to be go in in PJs. That was really sensible as everyone ha PJs, then they started super heroes and spots etc etc and that is just a pain.

But I always have a T shirt left form summer that won't get worn, and we colour dots all over it.

Dds school face paints spots for kids for 50p as money raiser, so everyone has spots.

Kokeshi123 · 14/11/2018 11:54

Well, they can say "no dressing up clothes" (why? Why does it matter?) but they can hardly force her to strip naked if she does turn up wearing one. Send her in the costume and feign ignorance.

SnuggyBuggy · 14/11/2018 11:54

These themed mufti days are really twatty and wasteful. I imagine there will be plenty of absences.

Growyourowndaisies · 14/11/2018 12:01

We have three dressing up days for DS2 this week. He had to be carried to school bawling his eyes out on Monday because it was odd sock day.

He has very messy hair, so do you think I could pop him in a shirt and jeans and claim he is Sir Bob Geldof for a knights, princes, princesses and dragons day?

Fruitbatdancer · 14/11/2018 12:19

I’ve bought a CIN jumper, 3 sizes too big so it’ll last. It was £8. He’ll be wearing it for the next 3 years! I also have puddly ears from about 5 years ago! So theyll do too!
I was the kid who was either never in right stuff/ cool stuff/ or had spots drawn on at the bus top! (Don’t get me wrong, it didn’t kill me, but I longed to be in the proper stuff) so as this is DS first year at school I’ve got the CIN branded jumper.
Don’t get me wrong I’m fully aware by next year jumper will be lost/ forgotten/ shrunk and I’ll be the one drawing felt tip circles at the bus stop! Grin but for this one year only I’ve splurged!

Mumof1andacat · 14/11/2018 12:22

My ds is yr 1 and it's a spotty day Friday. He wears plain white t-shirts for pe so I got some foam circles from the range for a pound and stuck them on with super glue.

ReverseTheFerret · 14/11/2018 12:25

Now I'm worried grow is at our school!

SailorGirl3 · 14/11/2018 12:30

Don't know if someone has suggested this, but what about decorating a plain t-shirt using sharpies or permanent markers. Or use come clothing that is too small/old fabrics and cut out circles and glue/stitch them onto a t-shirt.

Really hate these types of days, both as a parent and a teacher. Not everyone can afford to buy clothing for the child/ren to wear.

PazRaz10 · 14/11/2018 12:39

If you're worried about the costume, can she just wear normal clothes and get her the Pudsey ears, which are in aid of CIN anyway?
Or one of the CIN t-shirts?
