Aibu to wonder what’s the big deal about Costco

Apart from the big cake I can’t see the point really if you’re just a person and not a business.

How many ordinary people even have storage space for bucket sized washing up liquid etc.

I took out membership on a whim when they were selling membership at a station. Friends have raved about it. It is fine but I won’t be renewing. Whilst it is only a 20 min drive I work FT and have no desire to spend my weekends shopping there unless I have a big event to cater. I also found prices weren’t brilliant, choice is limited and they didn’t have the specific choices my fussy family want.

So in the right circumstances it is good but I won’t be renewing.

Maybe not income then but it still feels a bit rubbish.

Stabbitha

I can get on board with that. Not sure what the justification is.

I don't know about the UK, but in the US Costco has the best meat at very low prices. You have to buy in quantity, but I bought a vacuum sealer and just break up the packages, seal, and freeze.

When our sons were younger we saved quite a bit on frozen foods and lunch supplies. Now they're grown we buy very little food there (except meat) but still get paper goods, etc. And their prices for batteries are about 1/3 what you pay elsewhere.

Catering for a party, it's a winner. Their trays of sandwiches, wraps etc make things so easy. Everything else (food, washing powder, water, toilet roll etc) I price checked as I went around against tesco, same price. So day to day savings don't exist in my opinion. Bulk buying for a particular reason then worth it.

I do all my Christmas shopping there and could spend hours looking at the books.

I'm in the US and there's no restriction on membership here, although it's more expensive going by what people are saying on here ($120 for ours). It seems weird that there is in the UK, I wonder what the reasoning behind it is?

AcrossthePond55 · 14/11/2018 17:36

Eden, There used to be. I got a membership back in 1990 due to the nature of my employment. I can't remember when they lifted the restrictions, though, but I'll bet it was back in the late '90s/early '00s.
