Aibu to wonder what’s the big deal about Costco

Apart from the big cake I can’t see the point really if you’re just a person and not a business.

How many ordinary people even have storage space for bucket sized washing up liquid etc.

never been. none near me :(

OwlinaTree · 13/11/2018 22:58

Mmmmmm Costco icing. Nom Nom Nom

MasterSensei · 13/11/2018 23:00

My husband is absolutely obsessed 😂 convinced it saves us a fortune. I let him enjoy himself running around shouting out the prices of things.
Not convinced myself

MintyCedric · 13/11/2018 23:00

It's bollocks. My ex MIL and BIL were obsessed with the place so naturally XH had to get in on the act.

Unless you've got a big family and a house with shitloads of storage it's just not worth the aggro and really isn't any cheaper than popping to Lidl as and when you need, or looking out for decent offers in the supermarket.

Their carrot cake is something else though, I must admit!

Boysnme · 13/11/2018 23:00

I went for the first time in ages at the weekend. Came away with two huge boxes of muffins (that we’ll never eat!) enough meat to fill the freezer for ages, two decent hoodies, Xmas presents for the kids but the best bit was my sons enjoyment of going round getting all the free food from the sampling stalls! They just kept feeding him over and over! So we had a fab day out but I except the novelty has already worn off!

Boysnme · 13/11/2018 23:02
  • expect not except

We've just given up our membership. It was good but we didn't use it enough. I can get Kirkland bits on Amazon for a bit more than they cost in Costco but not as much as £50 more a year.

JellySlice · 13/11/2018 23:09

To save money you need to have a good idea of how much stuff costs in your regular shops, and not be seduced by all the lovely things you never knew you needed.

Also storage space, of course.

Then there are the things that you don't necessarily save money on, but are very convenient to have, like a millionty toilet rolls (storage space, again).

Some things you really do save money on. A lot of electricals are much cheaper there, often by more than the year's membership.

Their own brand, Kirkland, is very good quality. Down jacket, wool socks, nappies, wipes, all vastly cheaper than elsewhere.

dottyaboutstripes · 13/11/2018 23:10

We spend an absolute fortune on all kinds of things but we do get cashback. Loads of things for the house etc as well as food and drink. But we do have room to store things in our garage so can buy loo roll, kitchen roll etc in bulk

trojanpony · 14/11/2018 00:01

Yabu

The chicken bake alone is worth the membership price

MadisonAvenue · 14/11/2018 00:06

Never been, we're not eligible for membership.

Letsmoveondude · 14/11/2018 00:06

I love Costco. When in the states I bought about 6kilos of baking soda for cleaning for $5 or so. Much better than the shitty little tubs I find here for £1.40 a time.

Also, can I just say, the jacket spuds? When nearby DH grabs lunch from Costco instead of going anywhere else. Saves a fortune,

And suitcases with their 5 year guarantee!

And don’t get me started on their chicken Caesar salad! Nom.

I personally love costco.

BuffaloCauliflower · 14/11/2018 00:07

I love Costco. There’s one in my town so I can pop there as easily as going to the supermarket. No it’s not always cheaper, but I find buying massive amounts of loo roll very satisfying! It’s great if I’m doing any kind of event.

Snitzelvoncrumb · 14/11/2018 01:06

I'm in Australia, so it might be a bit different here, but I joined Costco and loved it, though it didn't really save us money. I compared the prices to a supermarket and a lot was more expensive, if something was cheaper it wasn't by much. If I lived close to one I would join as I would make back the membership fee on petrol savings.

BadgersBiggestFan · 14/11/2018 01:11

The pizza. Amen.

PurpleChai · 14/11/2018 01:46

We do most of our bulk buying there (laundry powder, kitchen and loo rolls) and things like massive bottles of Heinz and cordial, cereal and milk. My DH gets his whisky from there as the price for larger bottles can’t usually be beaten by supermarkets. Their large bottles of vitamins are also excellent value.

Normally we visit at least once a month, but it is only a 20 minute drive for us so I understand why some people may not be able to justify the cost of membership if they aren’t able to go enough.

Canuckduck · 14/11/2018 01:52

I like it for packed lunch snacks, toilet roll, , advocados, butter, crackers, Tide, toys & books. The yoga clothing is excellent as is the kids pyjamas. And the chicken pot pie is AMAZING.

ElseSmelsa · 14/11/2018 01:59

Massive pots of buffalo mozzarella.

marylou1977 · 14/11/2018 02:57

Love it, love it, love it. The Kirkland brand is a great quality. Already started buying Christmas gifts there. The price of a hot dog and soda is $1.49 and just can’t be beat. Their eye exam and glasses are well made and cheaper than usual. The pharmacy can be used even if you are not a member. I go quite often.

MaverickSnoopy · 14/11/2018 03:03

I luff Costco.

I have a system that makes it worthwhile. It's about a 40 minute drive from us so we go quarterly and also do a trip to ikea and make a day of it. The car is packed to the rafters on return.

We get 2 x 40 toilet rolls (80 rolls circa £20 = 25p per roll) which are usually Andrex or Cushelle, which I think is excellent value. 2 x large boxes of Persil washing powder & circa £13 each. Then we usually get giant bags of tea bags, trays of baked beans, pancake mix and ketchup. They're all the things that we don't like stores own brand of, so it enables us to pay own brand prices for premium brand. If there are good offers on then we sometimes buy cereal, spirits and meat.

We also do a sweep for presents for people. Again, better quality or the same price or less. I usually get at least 4 or 5 presents for children's parties. Then before we leave depending on how much we've spent we head to the bakery, although we're always careful not to over buy. Have also been known to buy larger price homeware items that are better value than the shops. Then there's the hot dogs at the end...

Totally worth a trip.

FromEden · 14/11/2018 03:17

Love it. Get big jars of mayo, boxes of tinned tomatos, toilet paper, twin pack of huge heinz ketchup that is cheaper than the equivalent amount in the supermarket. Laundry and dishwasher detergent and trays of sparkling water cans.

It's great for toys and craft stuff at christmas too and I got my glasses from there this year for way cheaper than opticians. We get cash back and have lots of storage space so it's worth it for us. I like not having to buy things like toilet paper non stop. Never tried the cakes because they are huge and there's only 3 of us but sounds like I should!

FromEden · 14/11/2018 03:18

And yes the samples they give out are a free lunch even if you don't buy anything

HerRoyalNotness · 14/11/2018 03:38

I’m I. The states so we have lots of storage, but I mainly buy

TP
Tissues
Soda
Water
Pickles
Pot stickers
Packaged snacks for the kids
Anything we eat that isn’t perishable really

I did buy DS2’s birthday cake there even thought there are only 4.5 of us. We ate it over 10 days. I think it was 20lbs 😂😂. That was an unplanned buy

XiCi · 14/11/2018 06:15

I drive alot so the cheap petrol alone makes the membership worthwhile.

Also I love Liverpool Gin and its £20 a bottle cheaper there than anywhere else. So basically I've made the years membership back buying 1 bottle.

Many other things in there are fantastic value and quality and not necessarily in big portions ie the fresh meat/fish/shellfish. The cakes are great. Have bought many trays of wraps etc for buffets over the years. Also have made many one off purchases for presents and household use. I don't think you can go far wrong for & 20 a year membership

Littlegoth · 14/11/2018 06:27

YADBU

I second the pizza
