Am I just old or do half of 20-something year old girls look the flipping same?

My daughter was watching Love Island back in the summer and I joined her for a few minutes to see what the fuss was about. The thing I couldn't get over was how she could even tell them apart! It's a cloned fake 'look' that they nearly all had - huge dark eyebrows, trowelled on foundation, over-plumped glossy lips, etc...

I've noticed it on other shows and when out and about, it's almost like a mask that everyone has to put on so they look like a snapchat filter when they leave the house.

What happened to being individuals? Why do so many girls spend so much time and money to look exactly the same as everyone else?

Like I said, maybe I'm just old and grumpy...

30 year old mums wear skinnies, Breton tops and ballet flats or Converse. My generation (late 50s) like a highlighted mum-bob withwhite jeans/trousers and a floaty top.

Haha this is actually bang on... My mum and her friends actually look identical! Highlighted mum bob, floaty tops, minimal makeup but always lip gloss, crossbody satchel style bag and some nice sturdy flats from clarks. However, me and my friends couldn't be more different in styles and tastes.

I'm a 20-something year old currently wearing fake tan (one layer once a week medium/light) as my skin is practically see through and patchy. I'm wearing foundation, mascara, eyeshadow, blush, and my eyebrows are filled. It takes me 10 mins to pop this on each morning and no I don't go out without it. The reason is the few times I've tried it has been women who've told me how tired I look and how pale I am.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/11/2018 13:07

I noticed it when I've had my eyebrows done with a well known company. The girls look identical.

Loonoon · 13/11/2018 13:09

And don’t judge those girls with inch thick, orange foundation, sharpie brows and highlighter you can see your face in. In my experience, personally and professionally, these are often the very troubled young women who are hiding behind a mask.

citiesofbismuth · 13/11/2018 13:10

Drone grooming. They've been taught by social media that this is how they must present themselves. I hope it dies a death at some point. People look so much better without lots of slap. It is sad. The American versions have annoying inflections to their voices as well. I don't know if that's made its way over here yet.

purplelass · 13/11/2018 13:10

As soon as the fashionable look changes they will too

If they can - that's my concern about all these fillers, plumpers, eyebrow tattoos, bood jobs - they're not all temporary!

Some do, some don't. BTW they are 20 year old women, not girls.

wrenika · 13/11/2018 13:39

I think young women often fear standing out...hence why you see gaggles of them all looking identical! I don't understand it personally...but then I'm highly unfashionable and weird.

Darfally · 13/11/2018 13:40

I'm from a black Caribbean community and wouldn't say this is a trend amongst my other Caribbean friends family, at all. Box braids, faux dreads, natural hair, minimal makeup, and embracing your inner individual is hugely on trend right now and I'm loving it.

WitchyMcWitchface · 13/11/2018 13:58

I feel that it's the amazing make up that's available now that is partly to blame. Anyone's skin can look smooth (and a bit plasticky imv) nowadays, easy to apply eyeliner. Stay on all day mascara/eye colour.

But the Apprentice demonstrates the difference between the contestants that are happy how they are and the ones plastered in make up. I know which I prefer.

Clothrabbit · 13/11/2018 14:06

YANBU. When I was a teenager some girls had short hair, some had long, some had curly some had straight, some were brunettes, some blondes, some sandy brown. Some girls wore make up, some didn't. Some were sallow, some were fair skinned.

Nowadays they all seem to have long straight blonde hair, and a mask of make up and contouring that hides their natural colouring and features.

recklessruby · 13/11/2018 14:09

I m lucky as I ve always been a bit different and I m 50 with long hair with coloured highlights.
Dd and ds are very individual (think tattoos they designed themselves and piercings).
But dd does have those bloody eyebrows!! And she's a very pretty girl but wants those stupid lip fillers. She's 24 and I have told her spend your money on them if you want but you have a naturally beautiful face.

cookies107 · 13/11/2018 14:10

I mentioned to my hisband hhe other day that i actually notice people without make up more now because the overdone lashes, instabrows and 6 layer thick make up is so generic and so all that effort to stand out is lost!

Conseulabananahammock · 13/11/2018 14:21

Im 20 something (will loose this badge next month) and I kinda see what your saying. Same style of face makeup, same eyebrows, hairstyles etc. Its the majority but not all. Also hate how nose piercings have now become fashionable. Had mine years and looked different now i look samey. For the record i have red hair, balding brows and rarely wear makeup. So it's not all of us Grin

RoomOfRequirement · 13/11/2018 14:30

They look the same to you the way the elderly look the same to twenty-somethings. Grey rolled hair, some kind of anorak, a black handbag, those shoes (you know the ones), reusable shopping bag.

PassMeTheBleach · 13/11/2018 17:14

Same with teenage boys. My brother is 18 and every single time I go out, I think I’ve seen him. I’ve been known to message him to ask where he is after seeing a particularly good doppelgänger, in case I go up to a complete stranger. On the times I have bumped into him, I’ve had to stare at him for ages before confirming yes, that is in fact my brother.

They all look the bloody same!

user1499173618 · 13/11/2018 17:17

I can’t stand the trowelled on make up. If they could just take it ALL off and spend their energy and cash on proper skincare they’d look so much better.

AamdC · 13/11/2018 17:18

Meh i was a teen in the 8o,s we all had a bad perm , blue mascara and frosted pink lipstick .

madnessIsay · 13/11/2018 18:23

I think it seems different to the past. I was a teen in the 90s & yes you had the sub groups but I still think their was more individuality. I remember paying £150 for imported Nikes as I wanted a different colour to everyone else. Nowadays it seems desirable to wear the exact same trainers.

Sparklingbrook · 13/11/2018 18:31

I have two teenage sons. The one thing I have noticed among the girls of their age is they all have long/very long hair.

blackchina · 13/11/2018 18:53

Well yeah they do have a similar look. But then so does every generation.

Girls in the noughties had a similar look, girls in the 1990's did, girls in the 1980's did, etc. Madonna, Bananarama, the girl in the Come on Eileen video. Many girls I knew in the early to mid 1980's looked like this < pic 1

When I see pics of my grandmother and her friends as young women (from the first half the the 20th century,) they all looked alike (like the women in pics 2 and 3.)

I don't think it's any surprise that girls/young women look similar to each other today. It's just the era and the fashion. Would be odd if they DIDN'T look alike!

I was a teenager in the eighties and everyone in my friendship group looked completely different.
We all seemed to have our own style. Not great style granted, but individual. I remember we all liked different shops for clothes.

ImpendingDisaster · 13/11/2018 18:57

They all look the same. And so much makeup.

It's a crime that youth is wasted on the young

TulipsInbloom1 · 13/11/2018 18:59

Tbf im a mum (amongst other things Wink ) and all the mums i know or bump into all look like clones of me. Skinnies, converse, stripy top, messy knot, glasses, haggared look, aroma of stale milk.

So its not just 20 somethings.

ForalltheSaints · 13/11/2018 19:13

ankasi you beat me to it, in pointing out that the look the OP described is a British thing specifically. What you describe is not only true for young German women, but I saw the same thing when in Belgium over the weekend.
