To think Christmas jumpers should be banned?

....well not banned, but I hate the way everyone is pressured to purchase and buy one of these.

Work is taking part in the dreaded 'Christmas jumper day' and it's very much frowned upon if you don't take part.

I don't own an xmas jumper, and I resent paying £20 for a jumper I'll only be able to wear for 3 weeks of the year. I know I can wear it again next year, but to be honest I find the fabrics very uncomfortable. Let's not forget, the designs are mostly hideous.

Wear a red one or a green one. Loop some tinsel round one. You don’t have to buy a special jumper.

BMOT · 12/11/2018 19:25

Stop being a Grinch, get to a charity shop and pick up a jumper

madeyemoodysmum · 12/11/2018 19:25

I love them
And have had to force myself to not get anymore as I have 6! I've had some fir over ten years tho and still wear so I don't really see it as a waste as it gets worn every year. I tend to start on Dec 1st and wear in and off till approaching new year.

CoatedInSnow · 12/11/2018 19:26

Buy a snowman/penguin/snowflake/tree/fair isle type one. Then you can wear it from when it gets cold, say mid-November until Easter.

Chickychoccyegg · 12/11/2018 19:26

Primark £10, wear it every year Grin x

purplecorkheart · 12/11/2018 19:27

I bought one in January on the sale rack in Marks and Spencers for a couple of euros. Before that I used to wear a plain jumper with a few brooches (that looked vaguely festival).

pointythings · 12/11/2018 19:28

I've still got the original one I bought in 2001 - it's soft and comfortable and I still wear it. I have a second one which is for really cold weather. My DDs have several and wear them round the house from mid-December onwards. Many are very soft and comfy. I love Christmas jumpers, and our office is cold enough that Christmas Jumper day is very welcome.

ScreamingValenta · 12/11/2018 19:29

I don't bother with it - my colleagues can frown all they like [santa].

PunkrockerGirl59 · 12/11/2018 19:30

I can't wear wool next to my skin so I have a Christmas t shirt. Think it cost about £6 in Matalan a couple of years ago. Would something like that be an option? I think Primark do them too.

EdHelpPls · 12/11/2018 19:31

We have winter jumpers - penguins, polar bears etc. That way they can be worn November to February at least! Though they are worn
About the house all year

namechangedtoday15 · 12/11/2018 19:35

God yes absolutely. It's crap. And wearing it for 3 weeks? I would wear it in the 1 day you have to wear a Christmas jumper and never again all year. They're tacky as hell.

I love Christmas and will buy into most festivities- except the Christmas jumper "thing". It's a pet hate of mine.

mimibunz · 12/11/2018 19:39

I just bought a Christmas shirt with a dancing gingerbread man. Between the menopause and having sensitive skin I can’t wear jumpers. The top was cheap and cheerful!

KnickerBockerGlooooory · 12/11/2018 19:40

Buy a cheap plain jumper and iron on some Xmas patches? Or just get a Santa hat from primark...

TheFaerieQueene · 12/11/2018 19:43

They are vile. The product of sweat shop workers - mainly children - and end up in land fill.

Idontmeanto · 12/11/2018 19:43

I agree it does create pressure to buy the flippin’ things. Especially irritating when schools do it so they can’t even use them the following year as they are outgrown. Charity days are fine, but £10-20 on tat that’s not actually going to a charity is ridiculous!

AwkwardSquad · 12/11/2018 19:48

Just tack some tinsel and a few baubles onto a plain jumper in the shape of a Christmas tree. Easy and cheap and much better than that nasty acrylic Primark crap.

smallchanceofrain · 12/11/2018 19:51

I can't stand them. I'm no grinch but they're on the list of Christmas tat we don't need but we'll squander the earth's resources to make.

It was particularly bad when the DC's were at primary school. Of course most children are going to want what their friends have - something vile, synthetic and overpriced. I once made a 78 mile round trip to an ASDA because it was the only place I could find that had a Christmas jumper to fit DS2. I didn't want to see the disappointment in his eyes because of yet another parenting fail.

In our house they were worn for a week and then washed and bagged up for the charity shop. If I'd been more organised I would have started trawling the charity shops in January for next Christmas's jumpers.

immummynoiam · 12/11/2018 19:54

It is another corrupted tradition - wasn’t it supposed to be the hand knitted thing your nan gave you?

I would find a Christmas decoration and pin it to an existing jumper for the day or buy yourself one Christmassy jumper you like and will wear (fair isle?)

AllesAusLiebe · 12/11/2018 19:54

Definitely not U - I hate them and hate how ‘zany’ colleagues take such delight in telling everyone else who doesn’t want to take part how much of a killjoy they are.

I’m on maternity leave at the moment so will miss out on these festivities, but in previous years I’ve worn black on xmas jumper day. I’m a miserable person who believes that one goes to work to actually do some work and I make no excuses for this. 😂

Leatherboundanddown · 12/11/2018 19:54

There are LOADS in all the charity shops right now for a few quid.

immummynoiam · 12/11/2018 19:55

For the kids, I’d say that you can easily get away with a jumper lasting 2-3 years, they don’t have to be a perfect fit, or just decorate an existing one with something removable.

haba · 12/11/2018 19:56

Such a waste of the world's resources- I hate them.

Xmasbaby11 · 12/11/2018 20:00

When kids were little we got xmas clothes from charity shops. Now we just buy wintry clothes and wear them loads. Just a pink jumper eith a penguin on or something. We give all outgrown clothes to charity so i hope they'd be used again and again.

superram · 12/11/2018 20:03

We are having a Pta Christmas jumper sale to reduce waste and jumpers going into landfill.

DeathyMcDeathStarFace · 12/11/2018 20:57

They should be banned completely, and I love Christmas, the meaning and everything.

Have 4 children and heard today the youngest (primary school) is definitely having a Christmas jumper day again this year. Just waiting to hear about the other 3 boys at secondary, but they usually take part too. Have 2 jumpers that will fit we can recycle from previous years, and have been known to buy pyjamas to wear over clothes in the past for when boys were at primary, but can't do that for secondary (or workplaces). They then get worn for bed for as long as they fit, the boys will wear them all year round, last year's had pugs with Christmas hats on.

Then we have to send in money. But if you don't take part the boys can feel very self conscious being the only kid in the class in uniform. (Oh, and the letter from primary school said there is a required donation of £1! really, really? I think they need to look up what the word oxymoron means and start teaching that to the head teacher, never mind the children.)

Sorry, will get off my soap box now.
