I know, cardinal sin: posting in AIBU for traffic!

IABU, I know 😜

  1. what was your baby's hair like when they were born?

  2. what is it like now?

Very curious as me and DH both have thick curly black Afro hair and our 3 week old has straight blonde hair! Genetics eh!

OP posts:
Winterbella · 12/11/2018 16:50

Of course hair colour is genetic, its on a par with eye colour Hmm

Binglejellies · 12/11/2018 16:52

Eye colour isn’t genetic. Never been proven.
It’s hereditary apparently, to do with the dominant colour.

woollyheart · 12/11/2018 16:56

Do you mean that hair colour genetics is not fully understood yet? It must be genetic - I know several families who tend to have a lot of red hair. But a lot of genes are involved, which makes it hard to predict hair colour.

PeplumP · 12/11/2018 16:58

@Binglejellies it has to be genetic? Hereditary and genetic? Unless I'm missing something...

DS 1 was born with jet black straight hair and now has strawberry blonde curly hair.

If a characteristic is hereditary then its genetic....

Soubriquet · 12/11/2018 17:06

Dd was a little baldilocks when she was born. It then grew into curly dark blonde hair. Once we had it cut, it became wavy like mine

Ds’s hair was black with blonde highlights when he was first born. Serious highlights that had various midwifes commenting on them. It was like he came back from the hair dressers Grin

Now at 3 he has the most gorgeous bright blonde hair

Queenofthestress · 12/11/2018 17:09

I have really dark almost black hair, DS had brown hair when born, it all fell out and now its so blonde he could be albino, and DD was born with brown hair and so far its stayed brown

jaseyraex · 12/11/2018 17:14

DS1 had a load of thick jet black hair when he was born. It's a very light brown now, almost blonde.
DS2 has more of a ginger colour. He's 12 weeks and it appears to be falling out so I'm not sure what will replace it.

I have red hair, DH has black.

TheWiseWomansFear · 12/11/2018 17:19

I was born with dark straight hair, it fell out at about 2 weeks and grew into platinum ringlets.

Age 23 I sadly now have dark blonde/noisy wavy hair - alas, my hairs glory days were wasted on my childhood.

5SleepingLions · 12/11/2018 17:19

Ds1 was born with red hair and it stayed red and curly
Ds2 was born with straight black hair it's still straight but more of a mousy brown.
Ds3 was born with straight red hair it's still red and straight.
Ds4 born with straight light brown hair it's still straight and brown.
Dd was born with straight black hair, she now has curly red hair.
I thought you had to have a red gene on both sides of the parents to have a red head.
So genetics must play a part in it.
My partner has brown hair and I have very dark brown hair almost black but have red heads on both sides of the family.

ethelfleda · 12/11/2018 17:23

He was born with a full head of jet black hair.
It all fell out when he was a few months old and now (he is 1) has grown a lovely head of dark blonde, slightly curly hair. I’m olive skinned/dark haired and DH is very Irish. He looks like his Dad!

TheWiseWomansFear · 12/11/2018 17:26

And of course it's genetic, that's what hereditary means... carried down in the genes, inherited.
It can be unexpected because it's not an equal parts equation - different genes carried by parents cause different results, and there's always a chance they'll combine in a way that gives your child the hair of your far distant Chinese ancestor... but it's still genetic.

Littlefrog99 · 12/11/2018 17:27

2yo DS was born with fine, wispy, blond hair and now has a mass of tight ringlet blond curls. We have no idea where the curls have come from as neither me or his dad have them in the family.

TheWiseWomansFear · 12/11/2018 17:27

@5SleepingLions you do need both or else it's recessive stares at orange headed DP and thanks ginger grandfather Grin

Tunnocks34 · 12/11/2018 17:36

DS1 born completely bald, then went ginger and now has a full head of mousy brown/ashy blonde hair. Very thick.

DS2 born with a full head of thick curly black hair, fell out and repacked with medium thick circle blonde hair.

OH has mousy brown/ashy blonde hair. I am half Pakistani and I have really thick curly hair.

Alexandra2018 · 12/11/2018 17:36

Mixed race B & W dd1 born with straight black hair, had short curls then it grew and the curls dropped its long and straight now and has blonde bits in the summer.

MuddyMoose · 12/11/2018 17:39

My son was born with wispy very dark hair. He's just turned 2 & now got very thick, almost straight dark blonde hair.

Both me & his dad were blonde children who've grown up to have naturally dark brunette hair so I'd imagine he will follow suit.

Frazzled2207 · 12/11/2018 17:43

Dc1 almost no hair
Now mousy brown super straight hair

Dc2 lots and lots of poker straight jet black hair which fell out.
Now (lots of) mousy brown like dc1 but with a definite kink.

Zoflorabore · 12/11/2018 17:44

This is dd's hair. I always get asked if it's natural Shock

To ask you 2 questions about your baby's hair...?
MemoryOfSleep · 12/11/2018 17:45

@Binglejellies hair colour is an inherited characteristic. The genetic inheritance of hair colour is not simple or determined by only one gene, so is very difficult to predict. But it is inherited. If a baby is blonde, that is due to the combination of gene alleles it received from its parents.

BillyAndTheSillies · 12/11/2018 17:48

DS was born with light brown, straight hair and lots of it!
I'm mixed race, but very light hair with curly but not tight curls. Whereas my brother, exactly the same mix has Afro hair.
DS, who is nearly three now has masses and masses of blonde ringlets (which I can't bring myself to cut). We had no idea how his hair would turn out given how mixed he is.

Binglejellies · 12/11/2018 17:50

I know Smile
Leaving now as this is detailing OP’s thread.

neversleepagain · 12/11/2018 17:50

Twin girls. Both with very little fine dark brown hair that is now fine straight light brown hair for one and thick curly dark blonde hair for the other.

sdaisy26 · 12/11/2018 17:51

I have v dark thick hair, dh has pale brown hair (goes blondish in sun).

DD had not v much pale brown hair, it never fell out just grew. Auburn coloured by time she was 1, now mostly a medium brown with auburn hints.

DS - loads of black hair. Which all fell out to be replaced with white blonde hair at age 1. Now is the exact same colour as his sisters but with a less reddish tint.
