Odd sock day and other stuff

I think it's another thing for parents to do, another pointless challenge.

I cannot cope with this today, I have not slept for two days and have a 3 month old dangling from my boobs constantly. So forgive me for not being considerate of what charity/ awareness thing this is for but I've spent at least two years teaching my child to put a pair of socks on. He's upset because he doesn't understand why mummy is asking him to get out two pairs of socks and put one of each on each foot and telling him to go back three time because he kept putting a different pair of sock on each time.

He's going to have to wear odd socks tomorrow to compensate the added washing.

He's put two pairs of sock on, one pair over the top. This shit is too confusing for him.

If he isnt going to get upset that other children are in odd socks then just put him in matching socks.

Sirzy · 12/11/2018 06:26

Its not compulsory to take part.

Just put the socks worn in the washer and pair them with tbe clean ones when washed.

I think this is a case of tiredness meaning your making a mountain out of a molehill

Thehop · 12/11/2018 06:26

My work are doing a full week of wearing pyjamas. I’m out. I’ll donate but I’m not buying Jamas to wear to work.

PenelopeFlintstone · 12/11/2018 06:27

At least it's only Odd Sock Day. Our school had Crazy Sock Day - so we all had to buy stupid socks, never to be worn again.

hazeyjane · 12/11/2018 06:29

Seems a shame the anti bullying thing is socks as well as the World Downs Syndrome day thing! www.downs-syndrome.org.uk/support-us/events/organise-your-own/at-school/

BathFullOfEels · 12/11/2018 06:31

Just put him in matching socks if it’s an issue. Surely just tell him everyone else at school will be wearing odd socks, if he still wants to wear matching then it’s his decision. I really couldn’t get bothered about this either way. But then I don’t have a sleepless 3mo which probably helps a lot!

hazeyjane · 12/11/2018 06:38

Face it, anti bullying day is the perfect day to go against the grain if he doesn't want to wear them, it would be very ironic if anyone has a go at him for not conforming!

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 12/11/2018 06:38

It sounds like the sleep deprivation speaking as this sounds like a relatively low key charity event. Nothing like the hideousness of World Book Day (especially when the book is specifically specified), dress as a Victorian/ Roman/ Viking/ Astronaut/ what you want to be when you grow up. Though one of mine always wears odd socks so I could be immune!

OrgyOfSpookiness · 12/11/2018 06:39

And now after a google I find it's £1 plus it's another sodding BBC endorsed charity.

I'm all for being different but ffs..

I just couldn't help him get ready, he's sooo good at getting himself ready in a morning and it just made it stressful.

Can we just teach our children that being different is totally normal people look and do things in different ways and that's ok.

It kind of defeats the point doesn't it if he doesn't join in he will be different and excluded for not joining in Hmm

OP posts:
Sirzy · 12/11/2018 06:43

Who would be excluding him?

From another angle why are you pushing him to conform when he doesn’t want to? That also defeats the point doesn’t it?

Perfectly1mperfect · 12/11/2018 06:45

I think you are overthinking this. It's just odd socks, if he doesn't want to wear them, it just doesn't matter. Most children will find this fun as its meant to be.

gamerwidow · 12/11/2018 06:47

This has surely got to be one of the easiest events to deal with though. Everyone has more than one pair of socks it’s not like Xmas jumper day (my pet hate) or having to bake a cake at short notice. It’s just tiredness making this seem hard. Don’t worry about using the other pair of odd socks just wait for them to come out the wash and then pair them again.

gamerwidow · 12/11/2018 06:49

Also there are always children who don’t join in nonschool uniform events. No one cares, the kids aren’t interested in what the other kids do they just want to show off their own stuff.

Escolar · 12/11/2018 06:55

OP, normally I’d be totally with you about dressing up days etc, but I honestly think this one was deliberately designed to be really easy for parents.

OrgyOfSpookiness · 12/11/2018 06:56

@Sirzy

It's what happens isn't it. Like the kid who turns up on non uniform day in uniform you know full well they'll get something said, plus other mums tutting in the playground.

I actually agree with you why am I doing this to him!

OrgyOfSpookiness · 12/11/2018 06:58

Just out of interest so I'm prepared for the next thing how many other days in a school
Year are there things like this?

I know of
World book day
Red Nose Day
Children in need
The poppy appeal

continuallychargingmyphone · 12/11/2018 07:00

I think you’re being a bit silly (meant kindly.)

It’s just odd socks. No real hardship. The money is annoying though.

gamerwidow · 12/11/2018 07:01

Depending on the year you’ll probably also have Egyptian day, Roman day, Greek day, Victorian day, odd socks day, various pta sponsored days probably others too. This really is the easiest it gets.

OrgyOfSpookiness · 12/11/2018 07:01

@continuallychargingmyphone

It really is a frustrated whinge so I am sorry Smile

BookWitch · 12/11/2018 07:02

Jeans for Genes day used to cause a lot of angst in our house.
My youngest is now in sixth form, and I have STILL had to go out and buy something with polka dots for Children in Need

continuallychargingmyphone · 12/11/2018 07:02

You don’t have to apologise Flowers but my advice - and I do hope this doesn’t sound patronising - is to try not to make more of it than it is, when I’m tired and emotional I can feel like something perfectly standard is potentially exhausting!

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 12/11/2018 07:16

Hiya OP! It is odd sock day at my daughters school too ...she has odd socks to wear but insists on wearing her new boots so no one will see them anyway! Send the pound and forget about it! oh and on friday its pyjama day for children in need ..another pound but atleast it saves me ironing another uniform! Gotta be worth a quid in my book for that alone!

AnotherPidgey · 12/11/2018 07:23

Just send him in with whatever socks he is prepared to wear.

I have a DC who is very prescriptive about what he will tolerate wearing which makes most kinds of dress up themes awkward because he will only wear shorts, short sleeved t-shirts and fluffy jumpers. No costumes. No face paints etc. He's never had any issues over his sense of style or lacklustre attempts at dressing up. (Apart from random idiots in the street who have an issue with knees in the winter, despite the knees being as tough as rhino hide and the child being perfectly happy with their sartorial choices)

JuniperBeer · 12/11/2018 07:28

Why would he have to wear odd socks again tomorrow? He would wear socks every day so it doesn’t add to your washing any more than usual?

OrgyOfSpookiness · 12/11/2018 07:46

It would appear that I've overlooked some other charity event in the school newsletter which is on Friday as well ( a parents go fund me event). It looks like it's just a bring and buy sale for children in need.
Three charity events in one week!

I bought rice the other week for something else...
