Democrats win the House, and he’s already fired Sessions: Trump thread 87

We start this new thread on a brighter note: the mid-terms were a win for the Democrats, securing the House of Representatives and further seats in the Senate. This means more scrutiny for POTUS and the GOP, and bargaining power.

He’s still a feckless, vain bully, oddly admired by some varieties of Christians - enjoy the cartoon by Mike Luckovich.

'Breaking: Oversight Chmn & Republican Trey Gowdy sent letter to WH Chief of Staff Kelly asking for more info about Ivanka Trump’s personal email use, seeking responses by Dec 5. One question he asks is “whether the emails in question contained sensitive or classified information”'

Oh, I know merry, I wasn't upset or anything. I just get so frustrated (in general) at the way Scrotus makes us look. He's taken the 'Ugly American' trope to a whole new level!

As far as Brits who like Trump, well, I think anyone not living here would see Trump 'through a glass darkly'. They don't know the day to day life of Americans and how divisive it's become, how he sows seeds of hatred of 'others' and tries to govern by creating fear. They just hear him shooting off his big mouth about his 'successes' without knowing that there have been no such a thing. They've bought the hype.

I expect that there are Americans who may see certain rather unsavory foreign politicians in the same way as some see Trump. Because we aren't 'living' with them. It's one of the reasons that I sort of hesitate to give my opinions on foreign politicians/political situations. I just don't know enough about them from a 'citizen view'. I thought I 'got' Brexit and had formed an opinion, only to find that I didn't know jack-shit about the real life effects of it.

Oh, and on a light note, starting to see memes and such about 'Crooked Ivanka' Grin

Lock her up, Lock her up, Lock her up!!!

SOOOOOO pleased that Russia didn't get the Interpol Presidency.

South Korean person instead.

www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-46286959

In case you had missed it, the former President disappeared, IIRC somewhere in his home country of China. Hmm

TheNorthWestPawsage · 21/11/2018 08:18

Also happy about Kim Yong-jang's Interpol Appointment.

PerkingFaintly · 21/11/2018 08:25

Oh that is GOOD NEWS about Russian not getting the Interpol Presidency.

The NYT explains the exclamation mark filled statement on Saudi Arabia.

Gumpendorf · 21/11/2018 08:30

Excellent news re the Interpol announcement.

But what a world we live in atm.

Speaking of SA and Yemen, also from the BBC.

I'd take Iran any day of the week.

Lweji · 21/11/2018 10:15

It's not the US as such that benefits from selling weapons to SA, but only a few companies.
It would be interesting to offset the business lost to Iran's sanction and the profit made from selling weapons.

Trump says "I know the details of health care better than most, better than most."

This would be the guy who said last year that nobody would have thought health care could be that complicated?

I don't believe he understands anything much, but definitely not the details of health care.

cozietoesie · 21/11/2018 13:08

.... “This can get a step or two weirder than it already is,”....

Thanks, lion.

Another NEW sealed motion just filed apparently from Mueller in the mystery grand jury subpoena case we've been tracking here at @politico - This one is 3,074 words. ow.ly/UyKY30mGZe1

Renato Mariotti
@renato_mariotti
This indicates that someone challenged a grand jury subpoena issued by Mueller, lost the challenge, and is now appealing.

Re the Ohio and Miss anti-abortion law proposals. It's just as I said. Now that Kav is on the SCOTUS, anti-choice proponents and legislators will be lining up cases hoping they'll end up before SCOTUS in hopes of finding legal grounds to overturn RvW. We're going to start seeing more and more of these proposals.

More on farmers and trade wars

Crops are rotting in fields as Trump’s trade war bites US farmers

"The problem is most acute for soybean farmers, as China generally buys around 60% of US soybeans, but purchases have basically stopped since tariffs began."

Papadopoulos was supposed to start his 2-week prison sentence on Nov 26, but his lawyers are requesting a stay pending the outcome of a separate case challenging the legality of Mueller's appointment.

Mueller's team, like the rest of the planet, has caught notice of Papadaopoulos' tweets. "Following the defendant’s sentencing," they note, "he made a variety of public statements that appear to be inconsistent with his stated acceptance of responsibility at sentencing.

Renato Mariotti
‏*@renato*_mariotti
The worst possible outcome for Papadopoulos would be for the judge to permit him to withdraw his guilty plea. If he did, he would be convicted and would receive a much longer sentence due to statements he made indicating that he no longer accepts responsibility for what he did.
