to think most "scary" movies aren't scary, they're just sick/gross? Where are the really well-made, genuinely scary films?

I love a really scary, spooky movie, and so does DH. But all too frequently we are disappointed. Blood and guts/green vomit/rotted corpses/gunge do NOT make a scary movie! The ones that have scared the living shit out of me and stayed with me for years are films like the original The Woman In Black and The Others - no blood or gunk to speak of, just really well-written, well-paced menace and mystery and great characters.

Yes, this is a stealth request for recommendations Grin

The Babadook
The original Wicker Man
Paranormal Activity, the first one
The first Blair Witch film

BaldricksWife · 12/11/2018 11:51

Flatliners

The Dead Zone (based on Stephen King book)

Original Woman In Black- first shown on TV Christmas Eve I think and I was too spooked to go upstairs!

DGRossetti · 12/11/2018 12:23

Not films, but TV adaptations - the BBC used to air adaptations of M.R. James short stories every Christmas. They really are worth catching ... all the horror is in your own mind ... masterly macabre. They were available a while back on iPlayer ...

I liked Insidious, and the Spanish one, the Orphanage. The Orphanage is extremely unsettling but well written and memorable with zero gore.

Dirtygirtyisthirty · 14/11/2018 19:39

Oh The Witch is really good-very well done I thought
A Pp mentioned Housebound-definitely worth a watch-I think it was made in New Zealand? Really funny film

I've seen adverts recently for a film called 'Possum' which is a british made horror-has anyone seen it? It's supposed to be good

RoboticSealpup · 14/11/2018 19:53

My sister and I watched a really creepy movie called Dead End one time many years ago and we still talk about it and get creeped out!

prettygirlincrimsonrose · 14/11/2018 19:56

Babadook was pretty scary

5BlueHydrangea · 14/11/2018 20:07

The Changeling - as mentioned earlier - is my favourite. A good 'chiller' It has George C Scott in it.
Also 'The Haunting' with Catherine Zeta Jones in is really scary.
The Fog is good
I like Poltergeist but it could be scarier..

Livingtothefull · 14/11/2018 20:14

If you like a really creepy old film with lots of atmosphere, try 'Dead of Night' made in 1945.

Chesntoots · 14/11/2018 20:17

I loved the original "The Haunting". Scared the crap out of me. No special effects, just atmosphere.
Might try and find it again...

scaredofthecity · 14/11/2018 20:24

The Decent is my favourite, I REALLY enjoyed Hill House as well!

darkriver198868 · 14/11/2018 20:32

I am not a huge horror film fan.
However films that struck a cord.

Wicker Man
Let the right one in. (Both films)
Long time dead
13 ghosts. (I have a distinct memory of a scene but don't know if it's true.)

Jaxtellerswife · 14/11/2018 20:40

Dead end is hilarious GrinI love it

dustarr73 · 15/11/2018 13:58

I just watched Badabook, utter shite.Didnt find it scary at all.

CSIblonde · 15/11/2018 15:01

For less more creepy, psychological horror, older is better:
Psycho (& all the sequels)
Audrey Rose (creepy reincarnation)
Candyman(the actor in it seriously creeped me out & I'm never usually scared)
Creep (Tube mutant madman)
Them (French couple terrorised by feral teens)
Wicker Man (the original)
Let the Right One In (the original)
Omen (the first one).
