to think most "scary" movies aren't scary, they're just sick/gross? Where are the really well-made, genuinely scary films?

I love a really scary, spooky movie, and so does DH. But all too frequently we are disappointed. Blood and guts/green vomit/rotted corpses/gunge do NOT make a scary movie! The ones that have scared the living shit out of me and stayed with me for years are films like the original The Woman In Black and The Others - no blood or gunk to speak of, just really well-written, well-paced menace and mystery and great characters.

Yes, this is a stealth request for recommendations Grin

Ohhhh @briklady, you have me intrigued now, just looking on google.

bumblenbean · 11/11/2018 23:16

Definitely one of the weirder ones michonnes! I think the freakiest bit involves the wall near the end (trying to be vague to avoid spoilers!) Wink

NymanPerkins · 11/11/2018 23:16

La Cabina (the telephone box). Short Spanish film.

brisklady · 11/11/2018 23:21

YY to the wall!

MichonnesBBF · 11/11/2018 23:21

@bumblenbean

Yup did not forward think that at all, really it wasn't a bad film,

I am a massive Walking Dead Fan (see user name), so was intrigued to see how Lauren Cohen portrayed the character and I must say I was impressed.

Ladygodivasroom · 11/11/2018 23:24

NoSuch I loved Jacob's Ladder. That's a film that seriously messed with my head. Have you seen Angel Heart? I always think it's quite similar although more gory - it's a real turn your brain inside out film.

Speaking of which: who's seen OldBoy??! Jesus, that is one disturbing m'fo.

Figural · 12/11/2018 00:15

I'm not a big movie watcher but no horror movie I've seen can touch the original The Wicker Man, with Edward Woodward. The contrast of the ending with the riveting weird but harmless 80 minutes prior really made an impact on me. It's the only movie that's given me nightmares, and I've refused to watch a second time.

Candlelights2345 · 12/11/2018 00:26

Place marking- I’m always in the lookout for a good scary film. I took think The Others & The woman in black are truly terrifying without being gorefests. Veronica (spanish) was good too.

PawneeParksDept · 12/11/2018 00:32

Oh yes @brisklady Martha, Marcy May, Marlene is an amazing film. Was it on streaming or terrestrial?

oatlatte · 12/11/2018 00:38

The Witch (2015) is fantastic

Dragonlight · 12/11/2018 00:43

The original WIB was terrifying.
The others
The turning of the Screw.

The sixth sense with Hailey Joel Osment.

I agree that most horror is utter rubbish but a good psychological thriller can haunt you (pun intended!) For years.

SarfE4sticated · 12/11/2018 00:47

Don't Look Now is really creepy and haunts me to this day
The Ring - Japanese versions - ditto

thenightsky · 12/11/2018 00:54

30 days of night.
The ring.

Don't bother with The Witch - slow and dull.

jammydodger5 · 12/11/2018 00:55

All the insidious movies are good
Conjuring 1&2
Annabelle

Dragonlight · 12/11/2018 00:57

2007 Chinese Korean movie called 'Secret'

HoomanMoomin · 12/11/2018 01:45

The best horror films I’ve seen were the Grudge Japanese ones. Up until the last one Sadako vs. Kayako, which ruined two franchises for me. I was facepalming most of the film.

Out of films in English, I honestly cannot remember when I saw a decent horror film. I find news more scary than films nowadays.
I suppose Malevolent on Netflix was bearable. Also didn’t hate Veronica. Insidious and Sinister all the films are okay. Annabelle had a few scary bits.

I don’t recommend The Witch. Absolute waste of time. The Nun didn’t do anything for me.

Paranormal Activity 1&2. Not gory but frightening.

brisklady · 12/11/2018 07:06

Good old DVD, pawnee Grin

dustarr73 · 12/11/2018 10:15

Whistle and I'll Come to You is really good.Atmospheric and creepy.

Heuschrecke · 12/11/2018 10:32

"You can rate a good horror by needing supervision in the toilet!!!!!" Grin

YY to many of the above, also The Skeleton Key - helped by the twist at the end.

BlooperReel · 12/11/2018 10:40

I'd recommend the Haunting of Hill house, The Resident, Green Room, Candy Man (gory at times but atmospheric), The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Rosemary's Baby.

I get freaked out by anything with demonic possession to be honest, so find those types of films the scariest.

The Resident isn't necessarily horror in the strictest sense, but it is unsettling, atmospheric and disturbing, and stayed with me, which I think is the mark of a good horror...caveat, the book is better but you asked for films.

peardropexplodes · 12/11/2018 11:00

Not terrifying but eerie (no blood or gore, just some very creepy acting) - Hitchcock's "Rebecca".

peardropexplodes · 12/11/2018 11:01

Also, Nosferatu is terrifying (the old black and white film).

EdithBouvier · 12/11/2018 11:13

Oh god I meant THE GRUDGE not the fridge!! sorry people.

Also the hills have eyes is proper scary
