To ask what would you do? (Moral dilemma)

I purchased some things online a week or so ago. I had an email saying the items were ready to collect so I went to collect them. When I got there I was told one of the items was not ready yet and to come back tomorrow. I had seen them in store on my way to the collections desk so asked if they can give me one from their store stock so I don’t have to come back the next day.

He went to the stock room and brought one for me and then I left.

He must not have updated the system as I then got an email saying the item was ready to collect.

I didn’t go and collect it as I already have what I ordered and paid for, despite being in the store yesterday.

I got an email today saying that I will be refunded because I didn’t go and collect my item.

DH said that I should contact them immediately to let them know as I couldn’t possibly let them refund me.

I am leaning towards doing that but while looking for contact details to call them it occurs to me it’s a bit of a hassle and their error.

I wondered what would you all do? I imagine lots of people would do nothing and accept the refund or might even have gone in to collect the second item.

The value is £35

You can either do the right thing & contact them since they did you a favour when you were there, or you can be a thief. Which do YOU think is the preferred choice Hmm

sweeneytoddsrazor · 11/11/2018 11:11

Ask yourself if you would be happy if their mistake cost you £35. Or would you be complaining. People sometimes make mistakes and unless you are happy if their mistake costs you then you shouldn't choose to benefit from their mistakes

Thewalker75 · 11/11/2018 11:14

Your dh is right. Can't believe you even have to ask.

abigamarone · 11/11/2018 11:14

I'm not sure what the dilemma is.
You asked someone to get the item from the shop floor, they obliged. And because they didn't update the online order (quite possibly not having the necessary access) you're considering it to be their fault and you should get to keep it for free?

It’s dishonest to accept the money, and as the high street is struggling I think you should do the right thing.

MrsEricBana · 11/11/2018 11:16

Im guessing you know the answer to your question.

Fatted · 11/11/2018 11:17

I would call them to correct the error. They might still decide to refund you, but it is their decision then, not yours.

picklepost · 11/11/2018 11:17

They sound so hopeless. Maybe just give it the same level of attention as they have to your order. Leave it for now.

jaseyraex · 11/11/2018 11:17

This happened to me with Amazon. Royal mail didn't mark my items as delivered and I was refunded a few weeks later. I called to sort it (it was nearly £100) but they said there was no proof I had my items so they were legally obliged to give me the refund. I'd probably call to sort it if I was you but you might find they won't be interested if they have no record of you having the item.

JacquesHammer · 11/11/2018 11:18

There’s no “moral dilemma” whatsoever.

Your DH is right. You contact them and let them know what’s happened.

Notmorewashing · 11/11/2018 11:18

I would take back the item and have the one that’s arrived now

Blanchedupetitpois · 11/11/2018 11:18

They did you a favour and now you want to take advantage. Don’t be sneaky and dishonest.

Maelstrop · 11/11/2018 11:18

Absolutely disgraceful that you have even asked this. I despair of people sometimes. Dishonesty like this increases prices for everyone else too.

JellyBears · 11/11/2018 11:19

there no moral dilemma at all, lol you bought something online, saw it in shop took that. So how you contact shop tell them you don’t need the refund as you bought the item in the shop.

Seriously what is wrong with you? Why are you even asking.

Semifeatured · 11/11/2018 11:20

It is all a bit of faff for you, but for the sake of my conscience, I'd probably do the right thing though the thought would cross my less than angelic mind to say it's their problem

Rarotonga · 11/11/2018 11:20

Contact them and let them know. It shocks me that this could possibly be a dilemma.

BlueThesaurusRex · 11/11/2018 11:21

I would definitely contact the company and explain that I wasn’t entitled to the refund.

I would feel like a thief otherwise.

Lazypuppy · 11/11/2018 11:21

Honestly, i wouldn't say anything. Not a popular opinion, but honest

hopeful31yrs · 11/11/2018 11:21

A few years ago I saw some lovely t shirts on selfridges website for gifts for friends kids for Christmas. I ordered them and in the end they were dispatched 2x the amount without me being charged for either. I rang up to find out how to pay and to send back the second lot but they were so flabbergasted I had owned up they emailed me and said "don't worry about it". Honesty paid off. I felt so guilty when i picked up 2 parcels and realised I hadn't been charged for either (only checked because I didn't want to be charged for both!).

Tors33 · 11/11/2018 11:24

haha I love these type of posts and all the pretend dogooders replies like they have never done anything wrong in there entire life I'll be truthful and say I wouldn't do anything it's there mistake not yours but ull get a lot of responses saying your a thief and disgraceful lol

SerenDippitty · 11/11/2018 11:27

I see no dilemma. You are not entitled to the refund.

Dfwr · 11/11/2018 11:28

This isn’t a moral dilemma. Unless you’re a thief.

BlueThesaurusRex · 11/11/2018 11:29

‘Pretend do-gooders’

Aka not thieves.

If you like, I can send you screenshots of where I have actually been offered a refund in similar circumstances but refused it?

Don’t judge everyone by your standards @tors33

JacquesHammer · 11/11/2018 11:30

I love these type of posts and all the pretend dogooders

You clearly have very low standards.
