I purchased some things online a week or so ago. I had an email saying the items were ready to collect so I went to collect them. When I got there I was told one of the items was not ready yet and to come back tomorrow. I had seen them in store on my way to the collections desk so asked if they can give me one from their store stock so I don’t have to come back the next day.

He went to the stock room and brought one for me and then I left.

He must not have updated the system as I then got an email saying the item was ready to collect.

I didn’t go and collect it as I already have what I ordered and paid for, despite being in the store yesterday.

I got an email today saying that I will be refunded because I didn’t go and collect my item.

DH said that I should contact them immediately to let them know as I couldn’t possibly let them refund me.

I am leaning towards doing that but while looking for contact details to call them it occurs to me it’s a bit of a hassle and their error.

I wondered what would you all do? I imagine lots of people would do nothing and accept the refund or might even have gone in to collect the second item.

The value is £35

I've been in many positions where the shop have been in the wrong and I've been left out of pocket they didn't care about me
that's why I have this attitude

You might want to find another shop if they’re leaving you out of pocket so often. Or start checking your change before you leave...

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 11/11/2018 11:52

Not true JacquesHammer. I bought my usual shop at Aldi last week and was charged for two items of a couple of things when I’d bought one. Didn’t realise until I was home, but kept the receipt and took it back yesterday, not really expecting a refund. No problem. Items deducted from this week’s bill and they were efficient and pleasant about it.

I don’t think that the OP has a moral dilemma either. You choose to do the right thing or the wrong thing.

Good result OP Smile

I think you’ve got the wrong person, I was quoting a PP.

If a small independent shop be honest, less certain about a big chain.
I once bought something in a posh shop with money I was given. I paid a deposit but when I collected they said nothing to pay.
I thought really hard and told them there was a mistake. Glad I did, there was something wrong with it and had to take it back.
Don't think I would have those scruples if it was amazon.

Liverbird77 · 11/11/2018 11:54

Let them know. It isn't even a dilemma. We were sent two car seats in error...value a lot more than £35. We didn't even consider taking the extra. It wasn't ours. There are always consequences for someone. Please do the right thing.

Confused

To the several posters saying the shop “did her a favour” - what flavour was that exactly? She got an email saying items ready to collect, and arrived to find they weren’t. Not sure how it’s a favour to find a way to give her what she came for!
Though do agree re the money. Click and collect type orders are done for convenience, there’s no convenience there if they don’t give you the stuff!

AliceRR · 11/11/2018 11:56

I have already called now and they said they can’t reverse it

It was M&S @Missingstreetlife

Thanks @JacquesHammer

I do feel better for calling

I have morals thankyou u know nothing about me I'm just an honest person and say it how it is simple sweety

AliceRR · 11/11/2018 11:58

@HohoCabbage

Yes exactly. The shop isn’t exactly in my doorstep and I had had an email to say the items were ready. The did send me an email later to say one item wasn’t ready (advent calendar) but it was after I’d set off and after the them they said the items would be ready for.

It seemed a little odd that I should be asked to “come back tomorrow” for the item when there were loads in the store!

Great, so the OP rang up and they told her there was nothing they could do.
Nothing to stop you returning to the store next time you're around to return the second dress (why would you need two now?)

I don't believe for a second that the OP rang up.

JacquesHammer · 11/11/2018 11:59

I'm just an honest person

Presume you’re being ironic now...

swingofthings · 11/11/2018 11:59

To be honest that post couldn't have annoyed me more because I'm finding myself in the opposite situation!

Order something and was told will be available at 4pm. Got there at 4:15, order not there but available to buy there and then. Asked if I could have it and cancelled order, was told not possible, but order would be refunded as not collected so paid again.

It's been a month and despite calls and the rest, I still haven't been refunded so yes, Sony find it something to gloat about that you got something for free when I've paid twice for one!

VenusInSpurs · 11/11/2018 11:59

Glad you called.

Shoplifting happens in different ways these days.

ainsisoisje · 11/11/2018 12:01

You’ll feel bad afterwards so no not worth the hassle. Everyone loves a freebie (once Asda misscanned my tuna so got it for free and let that go) but £35 could be suspicious and they might suspect staff

AliceRR · 11/11/2018 12:03

@youknowyourself Why would I return it when I ordered two for a reason? It was the M&S advent calendar. I ordered one for me and one for my MIL. They are now sold out I believe.

@swingofthings That is annoying. I think this is what @Tors33 means! mumsnet does often lead to lots of holier than thou responses and the reality is a lot of people do things that are questionable and now you people don’t even “believe” I called! Hope you get sorted.

I had this with mothercare. They delivered two pushchairs but I’d only ordered one. I called to ask them to come and collect the spare and they were so shocked that they gave me a voucher for honesty. Thought it was a bit sad that they were surprised someone would call and that it wasn’t the norm.

AliceRR · 11/11/2018 12:04

@craftymum01 I believe that. This woman I spoke to was the same. She seemed shocked I’d called to say I wasn’t entitled to a refund!

Boohissmiss · 11/11/2018 12:05

Send them an email no effort at all

FantasticHarryPotter · 11/11/2018 12:06

I usually do contact them to let them know the error and they can decide what to do from there.
I have once not but that was an item from Amazon under £10 and as Amazon pay next to no taxes can't say I felt as bad as if it was an Indie ship.

Tistheseason17 · 11/11/2018 12:06

Had this happen with M&S - I told them and they still refunded the cash as I had been honest - think their processes meant they could not stop the refund process. I certainly felt better for telling them and my honesty was rewarded.

AliceRR · 11/11/2018 12:07

@FantasticHarryPotter “usually?” does this happen to you a lot?

OP posts:
Boohissmiss · 11/11/2018 12:07

Sorry didn’t read all the way to the end that will teach me you done the right thing

swingofthings · 11/11/2018 12:07

I'm sure I will I just hate the calls, being put on hold, being told its being dealt with, then itcisnt you call again, treated like I'm being a, pain etc... Its got the habit of raising my heart rate!

All this because ordering in advance is supposed to make life easier :)
