To think hanging Christmas decorations shouldn't be breech of tenancy?

So my grandma lives in a block of multi storey flats which are council property.
Friday this was posted in the lifts
"Please not due to health and safety, tenants are advised not to hang Christmas decorations"
Otherwise it's a breech of tenancy and further action would be taken.
I called and was told this included Christmas trees.
Aibu to think the worlds gone mental?

Are they flapping about fire risks from lights or something?

Curlyhaircatastrophy · 11/11/2018 10:05

Did it mean in the communal areas or in their actual flats?

aliceinwonderlandforg · 11/11/2018 10:05

All decorations including tinsel,streamers etc
Basically none are permitted

aliceinwonderlandforg · 11/11/2018 10:06

Nope actual flats.
I thought she must mean landings etc but nope she said actual flats.

Do they mean in the communal areas? I can understand that these need to be kept clear in case of fire

LittleBitNuts · 11/11/2018 10:07

Surely they can't dictate what temporary decorations someone may want to put up IN their property? I understand communal areas but not in their home...

Watto1 · 11/11/2018 10:08

Get on to your local newspaper. They would LOVE a story like this!

aliceinwonderlandforg · 11/11/2018 10:08

The housing officer said due to health and safety regulations since the fire in London flats no decorations are permitted in any property.
I'm still putting them up.

OP posts:
Dfwr · 11/11/2018 10:10

Surely they just mean hanging them up? So you can have a tree standing with tinsel and stuff?

aliceinwonderlandforg · 11/11/2018 10:12

I'm going to actually ring the office tomorrow
I'm thinking surely the housing officer has got it wrong somehow.
It's got me baffled.
Would you put them up anyway ?

OP posts:
WhirlyGigWhirlyGig · 11/11/2018 10:14

That sounds bonkers, surely they can't dictate that?

JanetLovesJason · 11/11/2018 10:16

Couldn’t that be interfering with your right to practice your religion?

aliceinwonderlandforg · 11/11/2018 10:17

I would upload the actual poster but knowing my luck the housing officer would be on mumsnet.

Outrageously daft!!!

Your bloody curtains or blinds or clothes or magazines or newspapers or ANYthing could catch fire, not just Christmas decorations...

I would smile politely and say 'OK' but put some up anyway. Just don''t let any be seen from the outside.

aliceinwonderlandforg · 11/11/2018 10:22

My gran was so disappointed.
She loves Christmas and putting her things up.
She's had her decs for over 30 years.

Are you SURE it’s not just talking about the communal areas?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 11/11/2018 10:23

Seriously, a national newspaper needs to get wind of this!

What you are saying is that an LHA is scared that their properties are not effectively fireproof and are trying to avoid catastrophe by placing the responsibility for safety on the tenants!

Whatever the truth behind it this is Draconian and / or very frightening for all tenants!

aliceinwonderlandforg · 11/11/2018 10:23

I asked and she said it's no hanging decorations in your flat Sad.
New health and safety regulations apparently.

PersonaNonGarter · 11/11/2018 10:24

Council cancels Christmas! I am actually excited for the local paper!

aliceinwonderlandforg · 11/11/2018 10:24

I'm assuming these regulations are now in every multi storey flats all over country.
Hoping someone comes along who lives in a block of flats and can shed some light.

madvixen · 11/11/2018 10:24

When you speak to the Housing Officer, ask him which section of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 he believes Christmas decorations would be breaching. Or is he concerned that it would be a breach of the Fire Regulatory Reform Orders? My guess is he actually has no H&S qualification and won't have a clue what you're on about.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 11/11/2018 10:24

If that is right then you should be able to find documents on their website, H+S are public domain for obvious reasons.

But I suspect this is another of those ridiculous decisions that H+S have no knowledge of!

aliceinwonderlandforg · 11/11/2018 10:25

Next fridays tenants meeting should be fun Grin

GemmeFatale · 11/11/2018 10:25

Ask for a copy of the new regulations then.

And call the local rag. They’ll love this
