To think hanging Christmas decorations shouldn't be breech of tenancy?

So my grandma lives in a block of multi storey flats which are council property.
Friday this was posted in the lifts
"Please not due to health and safety, tenants are advised not to hang Christmas decorations"
Otherwise it's a breech of tenancy and further action would be taken.
I called and was told this included Christmas trees.
Aibu to think the worlds gone mental?

If it's the same as the notice doing the rounds on Friday; it refers to communal areas only.

Guidance for inside flats is simply to abide by fire safety guidance and not hang lights or ignition sources near flammable items.

madvixen · 11/11/2018 10:26

Also ask to see a copy of the risk assessment that has been conducted with regards to this.

aliceinwonderlandforg · 11/11/2018 10:27

Anchor - what's this doing the rounds?
I never seen anything

Oh! A perennial issue, it seems! There are quite a few like this:

aliceinwonderlandforg · 11/11/2018 10:29

Ah so maybe the HO is confused as to what's permitted.
Maybe it's just lights and wreaths on doors etc
I'm going to ask another member of staff
This h/a never seems to know what's going on

CallMePea · 11/11/2018 10:30

I'm I'm a block of flats.. not heard of anything like this. Sounds crazy!

Autumnchill · 11/11/2018 10:33

And what about banning all electrical items while they're at it; phone chargers, toasters, lamps, you know just in case they're defective.

They would be better enforcing working smoke alarms and fire extinguishers in all flats than this nonsense and I deal with H&S.

Nothisispatrick · 11/11/2018 10:33

That’s madness. I am pretty sure Grenfell didn’t burn down because of Christmas trees...

I would double check that the housing officer has it correct though.

aliceinwonderlandforg · 11/11/2018 10:34

Yeah I'm going to check.
It makes more sense that it means wreaths on doors rather than Christmas trees.

Gosh, I guess they are fearful of fire safety... but... I bet people smoke there. That is a worse hazard... and what about electric heaters?

Aaaahfuck · 11/11/2018 10:47

This is really crappy if there's not a mix up. Surely celebrating a religious / cultural festival should not be a breech of a tenancy agreement. I thought that tenants were entitled to something like enjoyment of their home in privacy on most tenancy agreements. (from what remember ours saying a few years ago before we bought). It's especially rubbish as she's elderly and christmas can be a lonely time. Although this doesn't sound the case for her with you others may not have family around and a bloody bit of tinessel is important at Christmas!

Gwenhwyfar · 11/11/2018 10:47

" but... I bet people smoke there. "

I bet they do, but smoking is often not permitted in rental properties.

I could understand banning fairy lights. They are a fire hazard on a Christmas tree or other flammable surface. But other decorations. No. I can’t see the difference between tinsel and a fleece dressing gown in terms of flammability.

Miscible · 11/11/2018 10:59

Ask the Housing Officer precisely which H&S regulations she is referring to, and which part of the tenancy agreements allows them to dictate this.

paintinmyhairAgain · 11/11/2018 11:00

what a load of tosh ! will the neighbours be grassing each other up to the council them ? how the heck would you police this ?

worriedgem · 11/11/2018 11:00

That's ridiculous. What about every other flammable item people keep in their homes?

wopbamboo · 11/11/2018 11:01

Thats so mean. Fuck em

tempester28 · 11/11/2018 11:01

This cannot possibly be in peoples flats, I suspect they can ban items being left within the corridors though. I would certainly call the council and ask them to clarify and if necesary put up a new notice that is clear that it only refers to the corridors if that is the case.

Sparklesocks · 11/11/2018 11:03

Completely joyless. Is there a chance it’s been communicated incorrectly?

BewareOfDragons · 11/11/2018 11:05

Seriously. Go to the media.

AamdC · 11/11/2018 11:07

How would they know I live in a housing association house we are also opposite two block s of housing association flats we dont regularly have staff from the housing association inspecting properties.

LeslieKnopefan · 11/11/2018 11:07

Check the details then go to the media. They would love this story
