to really struggle with the school run, how does your morning look?

I snooze from 7.20 until 7.40 whilst DH gives breakfast. I will help with getting DC aged 4 dressed and sorted then DH does school run at 8.30 whilst I attempt to wake up.

If DH is working I will get up at 7.30 and struggle to get moving. Similar routine except I walk to school and feel embarrassed to walk to school with no makeup and hair shot in a bobble.

Even if I go to bed earlier amd get up earlier I really struggle to be alert before 9am

I get up at 6:30/whenever a small child jumps on my head. I get a quick shower and dressed whilst dh gets a shower and biggest boy puts his clothes on. I prepare breakfast for everyone, we all eat together. Biggest boy and daddy go upstairs to do teeth, and I sort the baby out. I check dog has his lunchbox and drink for the day, sign any permission slips etc. Then dh goes to work at 8am, I go upstairs and clean my teeth, whilst the biggest watches telly (baby in cot)
Come back downstairs to sort out school bag, coats, pram etc. Strap baby into snowsuit and into buggy. Get biggest into shoes and coat, stick him on the buggy board and leave house by 8:20, to walk to school on time.

sleeping I have no sanity left, I just soldier on. Lots of people have lots of help, I don't, I just suck it up and wait till they're older.

SleepingStandingUp · 10/11/2018 13:52

Shack we're in the first week of mornings and it's killing me. DS has adapted well and way up at 7 today, DH got up with him and he sleeps better and doesn't do mid night wakes. But even I was awake by 730!! Like much of my life, I do get I just need to suck it up and appreciate my decent DH who does his share.
Sleeping before 2 am would help

33goingon64 · 10/11/2018 14:15

DH out of picture as he's gone to work by 6 (he hates it but he does it so he can be home in time to put DC to bed). DC wake me at 7, older DS dresses himself, we all have breakfast. I shower and dress while DCs watch TV. Then I dress younger DS. If there's time we play something together (or I get them to play together while I get bags ready).

Out of house by 8.40. No make up because I don't wear it except for days when I work away from home (work at home otherwise). I consider myself lucky that I get to sleep in til 7 and school is only 5 mins walk away. Imagine if you or your DH got a job meaning you had to get up earlier.

You sound like you've got your priorities muddled.

MotherofDinosaurs · 10/11/2018 15:06

I love our mornings. Wake up when 4 Yr old gets in our bed about 630, loll in bed with toast andnews while kid watches stuff on ipad and daddy has bath, go downstairs for breakfast and playing, then I have about 40 mins to do my makeup and get dressed before dressing kid and leaving for school. I do lay out uniform and make packed lunch the night before.

Gorbie · 10/11/2018 15:18

3 mornings a week I'm up at 5.10am, go for a run, back home and in shower by 6.10, baby is usually awake by then. Get my hair make up done and dressed, get baby dressed, wake 12 yr old, downstairs by 7, get baby breakfast and bottle, make daughters packed lunch, wake her at 7.15 breakfast and dressed by 7.45, I'm a childminder so kids start arriving then, nag eldest to get dressed, and teeth and he makes his own packed lunch. Make sure he's ready for school with any homework due in etc. He leaves with oh to school and oh goes on to work we leave for school drop off at 8.20
Pretty much same routine every day! I get the girls clothes ready the night before and re-pack pre-school bag at night ready for next day, I always like to be up and dressed myself before kids wake x

Amallamard · 10/11/2018 15:52

Up at 6.30, wake two older children, shower and dress, wake youngest.
Downstairs at 7.00, feed the cats, unload the dishwasher, make tea, stick a load of washing in the machine, make packed lunches, chivvy children, find lost things, remind them to take things, fill in forms, give them money if needed, all the general chaos of before school with three children.
DH emerges at 7.40 and takes two eldest to school at 7.45. I have breakfast, chivvy smallest, put makeup on etc. and leave at 8.15 for work/school with youngest.

Apart from the days I have to take them for sports practice before school...

CSIblonde · 10/11/2018 18:17

I'm not a morning person either. Get up earlier so there's no mad rush & time for necessary caffeine input (I can't get going without 2 coffees first thing). Do lunchboxes, put out shoes/uniforms & set table night before. You don't really 'need' makeup unless it's your thing, just brush your hair.

Sidalee7 · 10/11/2018 18:26

Up at 6.30. Get kids up 7ish, breakfast and leave the house at 8.
Cycle kids to school, cycle to station, commute to work.
5.30 reverse - back home by 6.30.

ILoveDolly · 10/11/2018 18:39

I hate the morning. I am not a natural early riser and I have to fight the urge to stay up late each night. Thus I present my morning which sometimes feels like hell, sometimes works:
Get up 6.45. Take medication which means I can't eat for at least an hour. Wake dd1. Dress outfit set out night before because room is dark.
7am lay out and preside over dd1 breakfast, feed animals, chat to whichever other child is up.
7.20-30 check dd1 is getting ready for school
7.30-40 drop dd1 off at bus stop in car (its not far but unpleasant country lanes)
7.45 get back home check children 2&3 are up, breakfasting, make coffee
8am eat breakfast, do hair and make up now if time. Usually this is when an impromptu packed lunch/costume/homework help is requested etc
8.20-30 stand in various parts of the house shouting TEETH! SHOES! BOOKBAG!
8.30 kiss husband as he appears then disappears to work
8.35 get everyone into car and drive to school
9.10 Return home unaccountably exhausted.

Actually some weeks my husband does the early run so I just get up at 7.45 then and eat breakfast after school run. I work from home so I can do that

Bigpizzalover · 10/11/2018 18:47

We (me and 2DC, 5 and 2) get up at 6.45/7.

  • kids dressed before going downstairs
  • breakfast put out for kids,
  • I get ready while they eat
  • teeth/shoes
  • out the door at 7.45 to do nursery drop off (they do school run for eldest)
  • pick up at 6.30pm, homework/bath/bed
  • repeat
Nat6999 · 10/11/2018 18:55

When I had to do the school run it was:

6.45 alarm went off, up, wake DS up
7.00 breakfast for both of us
7.30 send DS to wash & dress, I washed pots & packed his lunch etc in his bag
7.45 I got washed & dressed, did hair etc
8.15 downstairs, made DS put on shoes & coat, gave him his money for break etc
8.25 in car & off to school
8.40 dropped DS in playground,
8.50 bell DS in school

Then either food shopping or back home for a cup of tea, prepare evening meal & cleaning up. I had stopped working due to ill health, I'd get everything sorted & then rest until afternoon school run.

Caterina99 · 11/11/2018 14:31

A question - those of you that get the kids dressed before breakfast, do they not get breakfast all over their clothes? My kids are 3 and 1 so this might just be an age thing. I think if DS was dressed before breakfast that might help the morning routine a bit, but not if he’s then going to get weetabix and toothpaste all down his top. He won’t wear a bib.

Sparrowlegs248 · 11/11/2018 14:39

On pre school days ds1 has breakfast at pre school. He invariably comes home with dried milk, yogurt, juice down his front.

AllStar14 · 11/11/2018 14:45

My goodness you have it easy. I have to leave the house at 7:15 on the days I work. That's with three children that I've got ready by myself aswell.

Up at 7, feed 2 dogs and 2 cats. Dogs go out for 45 mins run around in the garden (we are lucky to have a large communal garden in our block of flats; we are ground floor).
7:05, wake my 7 yr old twins up by singing at them.
7:05 - 7:25 is scurrying about, doing p/lunches, breakfast for the twins, ensuring they've made their beds, getting myself dressed (I shower/bath at night), swigging tea or coffee etc
7:30 - 7:50 making sure twins are dressed, teeth brushed, hair neat, school bags sorted
8:00 - 8:10 coats on, out the door (often, with dogs in tow) for 35 min walk to school

Gorbie · 07/07/2025 19:03

Our mornings differ depending on who's working, I work 2 ish nights per week so I'm home 7,45am husband gets them up at 645 ish, breakfast then they start getting ready (10 and 7) I help once I'm back, make packed lunches full water bottles etc. I take them to school out by 8.10, then he continues getting ready for work to leave by 9. If im on a long day shift I'm gone by 630 so he does all and heads to work after drop off. If it's me on a day off he sleeps in a bit and I'm up by 630 to get them sorted, on my day off i go straight to gym after drop off so I just get up, make myself look presentable gym stuff on then shower etc afterwards. I always wash dishes put a load of washing on then sort all housework stuff once I'm back

Fuzzypinetree · 07/07/2025 19:56

Back to work after the summer holidays so it'll look like this...
5.00am - alarm goes off, I go to do some exercise because there's no other spare time in the day...I've got a little home gym attached to my bedroom
5.30am - I go and shower, get dressed, do my hair, get breakfast ready
6.30am - I wake the kids (8-year-old and 1-year-old), have breakfast, get kids dressed, wash, teeth, sort snacks and bags etc.
7.15am - leave the house to drive to nursery
7.20am - arrive at car park near nursery, walk DC1 to school from there, then walk DC2 to nursery
7.25am - drop DC1 off at school
7.35am - drop DC2 off at nursery, walk back to the car park and drive to work
8.30am - arrive at work

I don't tend to wear makeup so don't need to spend time on it in the mornings.
