Hotel rooms with no toilet doors are terrible! AIBU?

I'm on a short holiday with my husband and we arrive at our hotel room. It looked like a reasonably nice room, so I was excited to see it. But when I do, I find it's one of those "honeymoon villa" type rooms with no door on the bathroom! The bathroom leads to the bedroom. The toilet is around a corner so not directly in eye sight but still. AIBU to think it's so much better to have a privacy, even staying with a partner. It's supposed to be romantic. How are bathroom sounds and smells romantic? Not having a lock is bad enough, but no door... argh. Or am I just a prude?

I also nearly bought a house last year where the en-suite was open to the bedroom - there was an arch way instead of a door. Partner and I agreed if we bought it that toilet would not be used until we’d had builders in to change it. The toilet was in direct eye line of the bed. Who wants to lock eyes with their partner while they shit?? Confused

LucieMorningstar · 09/11/2018 18:14

@DianaPrincessOfThemyscira

I hate en suites, I shit often, loudly and very stinkily. It’s bad enough with a door let alone without!

Say it how it is lol 😂

Threewheeler1 · 09/11/2018 18:25

The idea of seeing OH's straining poo face is enough to make me want to remove my eyes, but the fact that there'd be the anal soundtrack and smells to contend with would probably kill any stirrings in my loins for a good many years Envy
And I'm starting to think there's some sort of mainstream open air toileting fetish that we're not aware of Confused

Fletchasaurus · 09/11/2018 18:36

@notsomumsymum is that the Fletcher Hotel in Amsterdam?

keepingbees · 09/11/2018 18:38

Why do these places think this is a good idea? Do they not realise it's actually losing them custom. It would be my worst nightmare to turn up on holiday and find that set up.
Me and DH were looking for accommodation in Bristol for a city break. He was going to book the city centre Holiday Inn until I spotted the bathroom situation and I refused to stay there:

@fletchasaurus it’s the citizen M near the world trade centre 😊

Shampaincharly · 09/11/2018 18:48

@fletchasaurus , Citizen M in Glasgow is like that too .

This thread is making me anxious just reading it.

I really do not understand my fellow humans sometimes. WHY?!???

adoggymama · 09/11/2018 19:26

God with my boyfriends morning poos that would be awful stink the whole room out!

Why do hotels do that??

TheFairyCaravan · 09/11/2018 19:42

We stayed in a hotel in Menorca twice with a glass bathroom door. It had a gap either side of about an inch and a half so nothing was private. I spent a lot of time on the balcony.

costacoffeecup · 09/11/2018 19:46

@thenightsky your comment made me laugh because my house with the open plan toilet is IN tunbridge wells 😀

Dowser · 09/11/2018 19:47

Oh god ...just horrible

Dowser · 09/11/2018 19:47

Do us all a favour and name and shame on trip advisor

amusedbush · 09/11/2018 19:47

I told DH about this thread and he said, ‘can you imagine if we went to hotel with no bathroom door? You’d die on the spot!’

He’s not wrong. I can’t use the toilet if anyone is within ten feet of the door - apparently even as a toddler I could only poop if I took my potty behind the couch Blush

We once stayed at a hotel that had a bath and shower in one room and a toilet and sink in another room. I couldn’t even pretend I was showering and run the water while I did my business! DH had to put the TV up loud while I shuffled off to the Poop Room BlushGrin

Our ensuite is like this. Although it's behind our bedroom so you can't see anyone sat on it, still has no door and dh goes to the loo and you can hear and smell everything. I have to wait till he's gone or use the downstairs bog.

legolimb · 09/11/2018 20:11

I have seen these hotels on booking sites and avoided them.

I am very private in my toileting and it would spoil my holiday.

I suppose it's all about saving money/space for the hotels. Surely very few people can be comfortable with taking a dump in front of your new boyfriend or a mate?

Bizarre.

mildshock · 09/11/2018 20:14

DP and I stayed in a "naice" hotel with no toilet door on our first holiday together. Awful.

If one of us needed the loo, the other had to have a walk around the hotel.

MarianneAgain · 09/11/2018 20:15

As someone else has said, I don't think it's the cheap hotels that do this, but expensive ones that are trying to be "hip" because I have stayed in all manner of budget accomodation in many different countries and I am relieved (pun intended) to be able to say that I have never encountered a doorless toilet / bathroom, but I definitely don't like the idea.

thenightsky · 09/11/2018 20:25

Worst one I experienced was in the lake district. Tiny saloon swing doors into the bathroom, sited right beside the bed. And it was a macerator toilet that sounded like hell. Not a posh place, but a tiny B&B.

WrongKindOfFace · 09/11/2018 20:30

Oh that’s grim.

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 09/11/2018 20:47

A bathroom with no door would be my idea of hell!

DP's shit smells permeate a bathroom door.

No door would knock me unconscious Shock

Butteredghost · 09/11/2018 20:53

Ive stayed at 2 or 3, all by accident as the door situation isn't made clear in the pics, description or reviews. Which seems weird as in my review it would be the first thing I mentioned.

Anyone stayed in the z hotel in London. Tiny rooms and glass bathrooms. The shower was right next to the bed. Could have touched DH in there while lying on the bed had it not been for the glass wall. It was also frosted but still see through.

Mistoffelees · 09/11/2018 21:02

God I make DH put in earphones or go out on the balcony when I need to poo in a regular en suite, I'd be turfing him out in the corridor with that set up! Booking a holiday in Austria soon, will definitely check reviews for mentions of voyeuristic bathrooms.

Sarcelle · 09/11/2018 21:16

I am horrified by this. I am going to diligently check Trip Advisor for bathroom news before I book.
