Is it possible for me to be pregnant - BFN

Sorry I know this isn't strictly an AIBU, and also that you aren't doctors or psychic. I'm just looking for some advice from people who may have had similar experiences as I don't have anyone I can discuss this with in real life.

My AF is around 5 days late, I have had very mild cramping on and off for the last week like I'm about to start but haven't and I'm more tired than usual. I took a test yesterday but it was negative.

I have no other explanation for missing period, but I thought a test would be positive by now if I was pregnant? Has anyone heard of a negative test at this many days late which then turned out to be positive later on?

I think they can produce false negatives but not false positives

DanielRicciardosSmile · 08/11/2018 20:15

Not personally, but even the most reliable test isn't 100%. Could be a faulty batch, or your hormone levels aren't quite high enough. I would try a different brand of test, maybe 3 days after the last one, and if that is still negative make an appointment with the GP or nurse for a test.

Cloudsurfing · 08/11/2018 20:20

Thanks that's good advice.

I don't really know much about it, we weren't going to start properly trying until after Christmas and have only been off the pill for 6 weeks. Just everything I had read said you should get a positive if you test the first day you miss your period.

Do you think it could also be that I used a very cheap Asda test? Does the brand matter? I could try a better brand in a few days time.

Spoken like a true TTC Forum novice. Wink

You can indeed get false positives. Because of shit tests basically.
But that's not what you're asking here, I'd say it's highly likely that pregnancy is not the reason for your late period. There's a whole host of things that cause a late period. Check with your GP if you're worried.

kitkatsky · 08/11/2018 20:35

If you only came off the pill 6 weeks ago it's far more likely your hormones are still adjusting

SpitefulMidLifeAnimal · 08/11/2018 20:35

have only been off the pill for 6 weeks

You're probably just a little delayed as your body settles back into the swing of things.

SoyDora · 08/11/2018 20:41

If you’ve only been off the pill for 6 weeks then your body will still be adjusting and it will be difficult to say when your period is ‘due’. It took 8 months for my cycle to go back to ‘normal’ after coming off the pill, in the meantime my cycles were anything up to 60 days.

Spam88 · 08/11/2018 20:41

Id assume you just haven't settled into a regular cycle after coming off the pill.

Cloudsurfing · 08/11/2018 20:50

I completely understand that it could just be settling into a cycle after coming off the pill.

I just really want to know if it is possible that I could be pregnant even though I got a negative. I also have a fair amount of nights out over the next couple of weekends and if it is possible that I am pregnant then I will avoid drinking!

I'm in exactly the same position OP! 6 weeks off the pill and severe cramping for a few days. I've taken loads of tests and all negative. Still no period.

I think it just takes a while for your body to adjust.

Cloudsurfing · 08/11/2018 20:55

Sorry you are experiencing the same but it's nice to know I'm not the only one!

OP posts:
Cloudsurfing · 08/11/2018 20:57

I did have a period a couple of days after coming off the pill, just nothing since then. I was always so regular before I started the pill, it's annoying not knowing when it will start.

Spam88 · 08/11/2018 20:57

You can get false negatives, so yes it's possible. Cheap test won't make a difference, some of them are actually more sensitive than some of the pricier ones. Hope it happens for you soon though :)

Spam88 · 08/11/2018 20:58

That bleed you had was probably a withdrawal bleed rather than a real period. It'll all settle down soon though.

MrTrebus · 08/11/2018 20:59

I've never known anyone getting cramping whilst newly pregnant so not sure this is a symptom yesterday. Honestly stop over thinking try again in a few days enjoy your nights out if not.

wineandcatsandlego · 08/11/2018 21:06

I may be a spanner in the works here but you have pretty much described how i found myself yesterday, period 4 days late, cramping and general PM symptoms as if AF was on its way (came off Evra patch in September), did a Wilkos £1 test yesterday, negative, thought nothing more of it, did another one when get home and positive! Rather a dazed walk up to the local chemist and a Clearblue later, am 2-3 weeks, an app is now telling me I'm 4 weeks and 5 days, and am waiting on a docs appointment! So good luck to you my lovely Flowers

Lila288 · 08/11/2018 21:06

That was probably your withdrawal bleed cloud - I had the same but still haven't had a "normal period"

I was always really regular before the pill as well so thought I'd be the same. So annoying.

Cloudsurfing · 08/11/2018 21:14

Congratulations Wine! That's interesting that happened to you, I guess it is possible then just not likely.

I think I will do as people have suggested and assume I'm not pregnant, but take another test in a few days anyway to make sure.

wineandcatsandlego · 08/11/2018 21:33

Thanks @cloud, feels so weird actually writing it down! Like it's real! Didn't think it would happen for months and months, we booked my (boozy) birthday weekend away at the end of this month only last week and now boom! Grin. And yes, i was on the merlot the night before i found out Blush and a very boozy Halloween and friends birthdays recently. All will be fine. But yes, have a few days of putting it to the back of your mind, and try again xx

Lovewinemorethanhusband · 08/11/2018 21:35

I didn't get a positive test until I was 9 days late, I had cramping and everything felt like my period was going to start at any point I'm now 12+4 , try again with a first response test x

PedunculatedPolp · 08/11/2018 21:44

Do you know exactly when you ovulated? Did you use an ovulation kit? It can also take up to 12 days to implant following conception so if you don't know when you ovulated then it may still be too early to take the pregnancy test even though you think your period is overdue if you know what I mean. Good luck.

TheChickenOfTruth · 08/11/2018 21:45

8 weeks after having the implant removed, I was sure I was starting my period due to the intense cramps.
Those cramps stayed for the next 26 weeks of my pregnancy. My little boy is 2 now and I'm pregnant with our second.Sad

TheChickenOfTruth · 08/11/2018 21:45

^sad face was supposed to be after the cramping. New baby is Grin

stickytoffeepuddingandicecream · 08/11/2018 21:53

I was nearly 2 weeks late before got a faint positive test with my second child. It was negative 1 week late. I was still breastfeeding my first child and not trying to get pregnant, my period was due and I could feel it was on the way so we weren't careful. Turns out my period cramps were ovulation cramps. This was confirmed at the 12 week scan as I was only 10 weeks. In my case I'd ovulated 2 weeks late, so yes it's possible to test negative 5 days late but only if you've ovulated late or have unusually low levels of the pregnancy hormone.

If you've only just come off the pill I'd suspect your body is just readjusting, it took a while for my periods to go back to normal when I came off the pill.
