To take DS to A&E for this? (Gross toe pic)

Just looking for quick advice before morning .

Someone has suggested I phone the docs in the morning and see if they have a podiatrist who can see him. Failing that, take him to A&E.

I don't know what else to do with it, but seems a bit dramatic going to A&E. I can't bring myself to remove it and suspect I shouldn't try

No, keep it clean and dry and watch for signs of infection.

Dermymc · 07/11/2018 23:02

A&E what a waste.
Shove a plaster on it, or just clip it with nail scissors and then pop a plaster on.

I'd not go to a&e, I'd just bring a plaster on it!

Vegisgrowingwell · 07/11/2018 23:03

bung

DontWannaBeObamasElf · 07/11/2018 23:03

It’s gross but I don’t think I’d go to A&E for a toenail. Maybe just wrap it up and wait until your surgery opens. Or 111 if you’re really not sure.

SlB09 · 07/11/2018 23:05

Leave it be, he is safe & well with you overnight and hopefully not in pain. If he is then paracetamol/ibuprofen. You can tape or plaster over it to stop ot catching. You shouldnt need to see anyone as it will naturally grow out unless signs of infection occur such as redness, heat, yellowing/pus, increased pain or if the sensation or colour in the toe changes. Minor injury that if you really need adcice the pharmacist should take a look tomorrow.

dottycat123 · 07/11/2018 23:05

Cover it over but don't put sticky plaster on the nail and see either practice nurse or GP tomorrow. A new nail will grow underneath.

MrsDeanWinchester75 · 07/11/2018 23:06

Dd did similar after dropping a rock on her toe, I kept it bandaged up and after a while the nail fell off.

Doesn't need a&e

Mokepon · 07/11/2018 23:07

Plaster or dressing to cover.
Wait for it to fall off.
If it starts to look infected bathe it in dettol or put savlon on it.
If the whole toe goes pusy and red go to the gp.
It does look nasty but kids tend to heal rather fast.
A&E would be the most dramaticist thing ever.

MrMakersFartyParty · 07/11/2018 23:07

Do not go for that.

whitewallflowers · 07/11/2018 23:12

You don't need to go to A&E. Just get an appointment at your GPS

Zigazagazoo · 07/11/2018 23:14

A&E for a damaged toenail? Goodness me!

thaegumathteth · 07/11/2018 23:17

I wouldn’t even go to the GP tbh.

toebornottoeb · 07/11/2018 23:18

Okay, thanks. I'll buy some surgical tape in the morning (had a clear out the other week and can't find any plasters or similar!) and see how that goes for a while.

RainbowSpice · 07/11/2018 23:19

I have health anxiety and always thinking of the worst case scenarios in relation to health, but even I wouldn't go to A&E in this instance. Just bandage it, let it air out when at home and watch for signs of infection x

Lindy2 · 07/11/2018 23:21

No you don't need a&e for that. That is not a serious injury.
Pop a plaster over it. The nail will grow back.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 07/11/2018 23:30

Do you have access to a minor injuries or walk in clinic tomorrow? You'll get seen a lot sooner and free up A&E for emergencies

andthelightshoneonandon · 07/11/2018 23:35

Hi OP, Mumsnet is the place where everyone will make you feel awful about even suggesting a&e.

However, I’d wait to see how he gets on. Looks painful and if it gets infected then definitely get a doctor to take a look at it.

toebornottoeb · 07/11/2018 23:37

Will it even fall off or just grow out eventually? It's still completely attached at one side?

OP posts:
toebornottoeb · 07/11/2018 23:39

@andthelightshoneonandon thank you. I've not been flamed as badly as I thought I might deserve

@RockingMyFiftiesNot I'm not sure. I'll maybe phone my surgery in the morning just to ask their advice.

OP posts:
OlennasWimple · 07/11/2018 23:44

It's neither an accident nor an emergency. It's not even really a minor injury, unless it threatens to get infected

It might fall off, or it might just grow out

Darkstar4855 · 07/11/2018 23:46

I would give your GP surgery a ring tomorrow and ask for an appointment with the practice nurse. A light dressing/breathable plaster over it in the meantime will keep it clean.

It should grow out without any trouble but will need to be kept an eye on for infection over the next few days. As it gets longer you might want to trim the torn part so it doesn’t catch on socks etc.

BlackeyedGruesome · 07/11/2018 23:46

soak in hot as you can bear salt water. think teaspoon to a pint? that will help to prevent infection.

I recommend cutting the loose bit off as when it catches socks etc it hurts like hell.

my nail grew back, the skin on the missing bit hardening and thickening all across the nail to make a thin nail, as well as the nailgrowing back from the bottom

toebornottoeb · 07/11/2018 23:53

I'm just worried that if I trim it, that it might grow in weird, or ingrown. It's detached over half way across
