To think £85 a week is extortionate

For a cleaner.

My house is not large, it’s a new build 4 bed with 2 bathrooms and a downstairs loo. We would only need 2 of the bedrooms cleaned as the others are largely unused.

I have been quoted £85 a week for a basic house clean (2 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, kitchen, living room and stairs)

AIBU to think this is obscenely high? I was expecting about 40-50.

For context I live in the south, but not London or the south east.

We had molly maid clean a few times for us, they were expensive didn’t do a great job. The initial deep clean was a fortune and was supposed to include inside of cupboards which they didn’t do. The first time they came round they couldn’t get in because they had forgotten to bring the key I had provided them with. The last time they cleaned they left grot on the bathroom floor that wasn’t ours.... which included pet hair which we don’t have. We told them not to return but they still took payment for the next clean. Mollymaid operate on a franchise basis so they probably vary dramatically area to area.
Never booked another cleaner since but would love to find a good one.

Wow Sweetpotato I would not have had them again after the first time.

Nearly all the cleaning jobs advertised in my area are £7.83 an hour or £8 an hour. I don't think cleaning is skilled work, I think almost anyone can do it and if we are calling cleaning skilled work, then all the other jobs that exist can also be called skilled.

I do think the minimum wage should be £10 an hour now.

Ours is £40 for 2 hours - London zone 1, so predictably expensive.

Standard rate is 14-16 pph where I am
